Despite their cancellations, we’re not over these beloved TV shows. Honestly, neither should you!
Even though these shows were beloved by critics and fans, these 14 series couldn’t make it happen. Some of them were casualties of a Writer’s Strike. Others aired before their time despite featuring impressive ensemble casts.
Whatever the reason, we’re mourning these 14 TV shows that were canceled too soon.
Pushing Daisies
The fairy tale mystery stars a beloved cast featuring Lee Pace, Chi McBride, Anna Friel, and Kristin Chenoweth. Created by Bryan Fuller, Pushing Daisies stars Pace as Ned, a pie maker able to revive bodies by touching them and using his power to solve their murders.
He also revives his childhood crush, Charlotte, but can never come into contact with her ever again.
Hannibal
Another Bryan Fuller series is gone too soon. Hannibal stars Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter, with Hugh Dancy as Will Graham. Lecter and Graham team up and grow their relationship.
Of course, fans of the Thomas Harris novels know that Graham is responsible for the arrest of Lecter. That makes their friendship in the series even more enjoyable to watch.,
Mindhunter
The gripping thriller Mindhunter, based on the true-crime novel Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, hooked fans with its debut on Netflix in 2017. While the series received a second season, a third was put on hold.
According to Executive Producer David Fincher, despite critical acclaim and a large fan following, the series is canceled as of 2023.
Rome
Many fans of the HBO series proclaim that Rome walked so Game of Thrones could run. But unfortunately, while planned for five seasons, HBO only aired two. The reason? High production costs.
Better Off Ted
Despite airing for two seasons, Better Off Ted delivers a brilliant take on corporate satire. Fans still use many of the show’s quotable lines today.
Freaks and Geeks
While the NBC sitcom created by Paul Feig and executive-produced by Judd Apatow gave fans a resolution, we still want more from the series.
The ensemble cast, featuring Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, and Martin Starr, is a coming-of-age dramedy set in the 1980s. Despite its one season, many view it as one of the best sitcoms ever.
My So-Called Life
Another coming-of-age series that lasted one season, My So-Called Life, featured a star-studded cast, including Claire Danes, Jared Leto, and Wilson Cruze.
The show deals with major social issues in the 1990s and is often considered ahead of its time for dealing with themes not often seen on television.
Jericho
The CBS post-apocalyptic drama aired for one season before cancellation. After the news broke, fans famously mailed peanuts to CBS headquarters, referencing the season one finale. Their efforts brought the show back for another season before it was again canceled.
The Expanse
The television series based on the series of novels of the same name was canceled twice. After three seasons, it was canceled from the Syfy channel before Amazon came in and produced three more seasons.
Fans hoped to see all nine books adapted, but Amazon canceled The Expanse after season six.
Firefly
The popular sci-fi western was canceled after just one season on Fox.
Even with a follow-up movie in Serenity, fans are still clamoring for more Firefly.
My Name is Earl
The popular NBC sitcom starring Jason Lee was canceled before the show could give its fans a proper ending.
Creator Greg Garcia would later explain his vision for the show’s conclusion to fans, but it’s not the same.
Santa Clarita Diet
The popular Netflix series stars Drew Barrymore as an undead zombie who craves human flesh. The show highlights the struggles Shelia (Barrymore) and her husband, played by Timothy Olyphant, have to deal with, given their unique circumstances.
After three seasons, Netflix canceled the series, much to the dismay of fans.
Man Seeking Woman
The FXX comedy starring Jay Baruchel lasted three seasons before ending.
Despite its story’s conclusion, fans point to how unique the show is. Few sitcoms, if any, were anything like Man Seeking Woman.
The Venture Bros.
Adult Swim, a late-night block of animated programming aimed at adults, was a breakout success for Cartoon Network. One show, The Venture Bros., delivered an outstanding balance of humor and drama while paying homage to old-school Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
The series debuted in 2004 and ran for seven seasons with four additional specials. Unfortunately, despite its devout following, the series was canceled in 2020. A movie eventually aired on HBO Max to conclude the series, but fans still wanted more.
