will prey kill your xbox 360?

Red Ring of DoomSince buying my Xbox 360 console back on launch day in November 2005, I’ve been one of the fortunate 360 owners to never have a problem with overheating, disc scratches or freezes. My console is in a wide-open, well-ventilated area and had always behaved well. I’ve played just about every game, demo and Live Arcade title to date.

Then, I bought the new FPS, Prey, and everything changed.

Within the first hour of play, the game froze twice. I figured that it was a software glitch. Then, the third time it froze, I got the Red Rings of Doom. I removed the hard drive, cleared its cache, rebooted, and managed to get about 2 more minutes of use before I got the Red Rings again. After a couple of hours, I tried again, and other games seemed fine for the 30 minutes or so that I played. Then I decided to try Prey again, BOOM, 10 seconds into the game HARD FREEZE, and now I can’t get the 360 to play anything for more than about 30 seconds before I get the Red Rings.

Did Prey kill my 360? Is this an indication that 2nd Generation 360 games which are pushing the CPU & GPU will create a whole new outbreak of system deaths?

Please comment if you’ve had any similar experiences.

I’ve heard some bad stories about the intercooler fans, so i went with a vertical stand fan, which retails for about $25 CDN at Future Shop. Now if you don’t mind having your 360 standing up, i’ve found this vertical stand fan to be an excellent cooling system. it eliminates the possibility of causing power surge or arc related problems in the unit because it is powered by its own independent ac adaptor, which is also handy because you can leave the cooling stand on after the 360 is turned off to get the unit completely cooled off faster.

Dude… Send your Xbox in to Microsoft once and for all.

I know it sucks to let go of it, but that’s the only way you’ll get it fixed properly. Especially now that they extended the warranty for the 3 red ring issue, you have no excuse.

They even have a special new Website where you can start the service process:

    http://service.xbox.com

    your right thanks

my 360 has broke 3 time in less then eight months its in a well ventilated place near my window and next time i think im going to sue Microsoft for a defaulter iv also play a lot of game but gust renting them iv only had my 360 about half a year can you give me some tip on how to stop it doing again and do you now that the xbox 360 garenty is now 3 years

  10. technabob says:

Ben, the only thing that you can hope is that when you send your 360 in for repair, that you’ll end up with the new cooling design that’s supposed to be better.

You certainly could try a Nyko Intercooler fan too, but there’s some debate on if that’s a good thing or not. Personally, I found that it cooled off my 360 quite a bit, but was just painfully loud.

And yes, if you’re getting 3 red rings, your warranty will go for up to 3 years.

  11. Shadow Ferret says:

This has recently happened to me with Halo 3. Exactly the same symptoms, everything. I now have to send it in for repairs.

  12. technabob says:

Word is that lots of people are starting to report Halo 3 errors, freezes and RROD issues. Rumors are that it could be corrupting the hard drive — but that’s just an early rumor.

If you can believe it, I haven’t picked up my copy yet, but I’m hoping it doesn’t kill my (currently functional) console.

  13. Switch201 says:

Ya i was playing halo 3 about to kill a brute then the game froze. when i turned it back on 3 red rings were around the power switch. so i unpluged that box thing that is conected to the powere switch because it was making a weid nose. but i still don’t think that will do it

  14. Cam says:

Ya that happened to me and it sucks like sometimes i can get actuaollly in to the game then it freezes but usally icant even get it on

  15. colton says:

my xbox is in a moderately well ventilated area and i have never had any issues with freezing before but when i play prey i have gotten to a specific point in the game and every time i load my save file it freezes on the loading screen. I am not technologically oriented person but as far as i know game systems cannot be judgemental towards games can they?

  16. technabob says:

Actually, any given game engine could exercise the CPU and GPU in different way than others. So it’s possible that Prey’s engine pushes the processors harder than some others.

  17. Ian says:

i think ur xbox is just messed up i bought mine in 07 and i havnt had any problems yet, prey froze ONCE and now it is fine, no problems. You guys just need newer xbox 360’s.

i’ve had a problem with my elite freezing at the xbox logo…I get around that by starting the console without the video cable plugged in the back and as its starting plugging the cable in….it works for me. and my games use to freeze in play all the time but i found if you start them from the dashboard it happens a lot less…not sure how to totally stop it though.

  21. MO says:

i’ve had my 360 for about just over a month and no problems. I think its just the older models.

  22. hhray says:

are there any newer xbox 360 elite consoles that come with a jasper version motherboard
