well first of all nobody can say that it is definite one way or the other. each system has the same basic parts. each system has a chance of failure for any 1 of those parts. my 80 gig backwards compatible system has been running fine since it's release date. until now. it freezes after 5 minutes of gameplay. most likely the bluray laser failing. yes my system gets very hot (even though it's on an open entertainment shelf with nothing around it within 12". everyone assumes that there is an overheating issue with the ps3. the fact is that if certain parts fail it will cause the ps3 to definitely get warmer or hot. for instance when u have a game in the ps3 is telling the laser to read it. the bluray laser is faulty. but the ps3 doesn't recognize that theres a problem and is still in the mode to read it. the two conflict and of course the system will get hotter being frozen in limbo. but guess what. i'm not complaining at all. Just waiting patiently for it to be fixed. if your that worried about it overheating- take it apart and clean off the old thermal compound on the gpu and put your own damn thermal compound on it. that way if it has a problem later you can blame yourself and not get on here whining about it. it's a gaming system. get over it.

I have owned every playstation system so far. Sorry to tell you as a big fan of the ps systems every last one of them have had a system flaw. the ps1 had the motor to close to the lens assembly. the ps2 had small flaws not worth mentioning and my baby the ps3 has the yellow light of doom due to in part of a issue of using cold solder. from my understanding this was used in the older 20-40 gb models. as much as i love playstation they are not without flaws.

First off, I have a 80gb PS3 I bought over a year ago, and it started locking up after an hour of play the first day because of heat. I've bought this cooler and it still locks up but now it takes about 6-8 hours of non-stop play for it to happen. I keep my PS3 on top of my computer desk with no obstructions anywhere around the unit. I've even had to use a fan (desk type) blowing into the front vents with this cooler to keep it from locking up in the winter when the house is 77-83deg. FYI the fans in this cooler are kinda cheap and start making a rubbing noise and slow down after about 8 months on the system.....WD-40 fixes it though. :)

I've had my 80 gig PS3 for 1 year and it definitely gets hot and the video freezes when I play Blueray Discs and some games (like Assassins Creed for example - which I know also has software glitches, but I've noticed that when the video freezes the console is hot!). I do not have the system in an enclosed space, though I do have it close to my 52" Samsung LCD HDTV (6 - 8 inches). From the reviews I've seen at IGN.com, though the cooling systems make some noise (they review the Nyco Intercooler 2 piece unit and Pelican Air Flow 1 piece unit), they both reduce the temperature of the system, and Blueray discs run with no freezing, while the sytems run cooler overall (based on side by side comparison with 2 units - 1 with and 1 without cooling susyems). You trade off an increase in noise (which might be bothersome if you sit close to the unit, or are in a small room), for a cooler running game system.

Yeah, I've had a ps3 for almost a year and I have NEVER had an overheating problem and I play it regularly. It has frozen before, but none of that aforementioned "it catches on fire after 15 seconds of need for speed" stuff. Just a little hint, if you turn off the power switch on the back, and then turn it back on while holding the eject button, it does a fan test that blows all the dust and stuff out. I think it only works on some trims though.

FINALLY....SOMEONE HAS FIGURED OUT THAT THE COMMENTS ARE FOR THE PS3 INTERCOOLER! Not PS3 IN GENERAL.......By THE WAY; INTERCOOLER IS NOT NEEDED IF YOUR PS3 IS OUT IN THE OPEN AND NOT CONFINED BY ANY OBJECTS (ENTERTAINMENT STANDS INCLUDED) WITHIN 6 INCHES RADIUS. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE NO GENERAL ANSWERS TO OVERHEATING PS3; YOUR SYSTEM WILL JUST RUN FINE! IF NOT....THANKS TO WARRANTY. REMEMBER- MADE BY MAN, CAN BREAK BY MAN!

This comment is directed at comment number 4: Rob and comment number 10, nathan.

The ps3 does not 'defiantly have overheating problems' just because your system keeps breaking, what that means is you have a faulty system and all you have to do is contact sony and they repair or replace it.

Im so sick and tired of people buying a games console, which breaks and instead of using their manufacturers warranty they just come on the internet and bitch and moan about how crap the system is.

If your having errors, get it replaced, dont just 'live with it' because you have the right to get it fixed, not every console is perfect..

You said you wanted to hear about heat related problems so I'm letting you know of one. I'm having problems with the blu ray drive and disc errors. After googling my error code (80010514) and (80029906) I've determined that it is a blu-ray drive failure. After shutting the ps3 down for awhile I am able to once again load games and play for about 10 minutes before they start crashing again. First thing I notice before the game completely crashes is a loss of audio. I'm assuming that comes from it not being able to play it from the disc. Then as soon as it tries to load a new area, crash. I have to reach behind the ps3 and do a hard shut down. I have called sony they are sending me a box to return my unit and get a replacement under warranty. I actually ran across this article while researching inter coolers but unfortunately I'm not sure if I should use one or just stand the ps3 up vertically instead of horizontally like it was. Before people start slamming me and saying things, no the ps3 was not in an enclosed cabinet. It was sitting on a glass shelf under my TV stand in completely open air with nothing else within 8 inches of it on either side.

Make sure there's at least 6 to 8 inches of clearance on every side of your PS3, and that should help with ventilation.

Btw, I have the 60GB version I bought during this month of Dec 2007. It became a problem when I first ran it right out of the box on Christmas Day. I mostly notice this during 30 minutes into NFS Pro Street, and about 20-30 mins of COD4

I'm not sure if its normal, but my PS3, when I put my hand on top of the heat vent, it actually slightly, SLIGHTLY burns my hand. Is this normal? It's right by the 22" flat screen T.V. I have, so that may be the problem adding to it, and that theres a 8 grid power strip fully loaded just a little ways from the PS3's rear. What should I do?

Yeah, I have a PS3, 360 and a Wii. The only one that's ever overheated was the 360. The Wii is definitely the coolest to the touch, followed closely by the PS3. The 360 feels like an Easy Bake oven on the other hand.

actually there is not overheat problem on the PS3 and all the people saying there is are 360 fanboys trying to feel better after changing their 360 3 times. so yeah there is no heat problem for the PS3.
