I was on the Microsoft Xbox website when I stumbled across this interesting form…

xbox 360 disc replacement

Apparently, Microsoft is now offering a disc replacement program for certain Xbox 360 titles. According to the site, they will replace certain discs that have been damaged for any reason for $20 bucks each.

The program currently covers a limited number of titles, including:

  1. I purchased an Xbox 360 and the Guitar Hero II game on July 21, 2007. I had it for approximately 4 or 5 days and went to play Guitar Hero II game.and I got an error message that stated “The disc is unreadable”. The disc was not removed from the console since it was purchased. It worked the night before and the next day I got the error message. I feel like I have gotten ripped off and have no options available to me. I am really frustrated. Can you provide me with any assistance.

I know this sounds weird, but if the disc just has minor surface scratches or any warping, this has actually worked for me:

Try “boiling” the disc. Here’s what you do:
    1) Bring a couple of inches of water to a boil in either a pot or in the microwave
    2) Place your disc on the end of a wooden mixing spoon (stick through the hole)
    3) Dip the disc in the boiling water for about 20 to 30 seconds (max). [Under no circumstances should you put the DVD in the microwave though, you'll destroy it.]
    4) Take the disc out and let it sit for a couple of minutes on a paper towel or a clean dry surface
    5) Once it’s back to room temperature, use a clean, non abrasive cloth to remove any water or water spots
    6) Try the disc again.

Sometimes you have to repeat this a couple of times, but I just tried this the other day with a disc that I thought was dead, and it brought it back to life.

    Good Luck!

P.S. Next time you buy a disc, you might want to go to Best Buy. They offer a “disc insurance” policy for about 5 bucks, which will replace even scratched discs.

So our guitar hero II game froze mid song. We restarted and got “disk error”. Took out the disk and there was a really wide scratch all the way around it. This replacement program sounds great, if you’ve got one of those handfull of games. What about the rest? Are they gonna be adding to this list or are we just left out in the cold?

How nice of Microsoft to replace the disk for $20 that their faulty system damaged in the first place. This X Box has been nothing but trouble. First the red ring of death and now this. I’m glad my son is asking for a different system for Christmas this year.
