If you look at the line which is approximately centre it looks a bit like the "hour hand" like that of a standard clock, making it easier to get an idea of the time. It tells you right at the top that it is an animation showing how the clock works. It is a flash, so your genius on being able to tell that it is faked by the shadow and pixel variation really is not genius at all, just inability to read the posted material that would have helped you further understand the design, which is pretty freaking cool.
