Giant Styrofoam Robots on the Attack!
July 4th, 2008
Actually, despite their size, these styrofoam robots look pretty docile. In fact, you could probably take down an attacking Styrobot with a well-placed karate chop or two.

With the largest of his creations towering overhead at 22-feet tall, Michael Salter’s packing foam robot sculptures are a sight to behold. Surrounded by an army of pint-sized sentry Styrobots, the gargantuan ‘bot is actually made from discarded packing materials, hung on a wooden skeletal system for support.

You can check out the robots shown above at the Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Art, which runs through October 19, 2008.

Additional images of Salter’s wondrous robot creations can be found on the artist’s website.

On the left shoulder of the giant robot is a bowl-shaped piece with a slot cut in it. That’s the packing material from an old Apple iMac G4 (like the 1.25 GHz model). I have one of those in my office. When it is sitting on a desk with the bowl opened upwards, it looks like a toilet. I put a sign next to mine that says “please flush after use” in three languages.
