Turn Your Wii Remote Into a Useful Tool
January 18th, 2009
You could keep an actual toolbox around, with things like screwdrivers and hammers… or you could con your gadgets into performing double duty as home improvement devices. And sure, you may not want to pound nails with your iPhone, but I bet you have no objection to using your Wii remote as a level.

Leveltool is a homebrew application that turns that oh-so-versatile motion-sensing Wii controller into a level. As you might have guessed, the project was inspired by creator Alanceil’s lack of a spirit level. Necessity truly is the mother of invention!
In order to use Leveltool, you must have the Homebrew Channel on your Wii, as well as an SD card. You can find a tutorial for setup here.

That does it. It has gotten to the point where I cannot hold-off any longer. I MUST get myself a Wii.
That’s a clever use of the Nintendo Wii controller, and I’m glad to see the gaming console market offering and competition has made the Nintendo Wii console affordable. I’ve also got a similar Level app for my Nokia N97 phone that makes use of the built in motion sensors, though I don’t really trust the thing to be accurate enough for serious building projects.
