Long-Ass PS3 Ad Measures Data by Sunflowers
March 6th, 2009
Gigabytes? Pssh. The Cell processor is the future. Of what exactly I don’t know, but it’s the future. The Cell is in each and every Playstation 3. Sony makes Playstation 3s. So if Sony says that 5GB of data equals 5 sunflowers then 5GB of data equals 5 sunflowers.
This groundbreaking technological term was first used in this epic commercial for the Playstation 3, in which the narrator – who is either Optimus Prime or a long-time smoker – asks us mere mortals, “With so much space on a single Blu-ray disc, the only thing you’ll need more of is time.” Damn straight. More time to work to earn the money to buy a PS3. More time to whine about the lack of PS2 backwards compatibility.
Remember also the narrator’s other wise words: “The Cell controls it all; not just one, but an entire fleet of enemies.” So if you’re having a hard time beating a game, go straight for the top of the chain. Destroy the Cell, and all your enemies will be gone. Do it! Before 50 sunflowers’ worth of enemy fleets attack you.

Isn’t this the advert released before the PS3 launched? What is the point in this article?
Compare this ad to the ones that came after it. Which one is better, the insanely long one that smothers you with vague and oversimplified explanations like demonstrating amount of data in terms of sunflowers or processing power in terms of snow, or short one that actually shows and identifies the games that you can play on the PS3?
You’d be stupid if you say that Sony didn’t have any games at the time the ad was released. They had Resistance and Warhawk (and at least 12 others), games that are indeed shown in the ad, but instead of telling viewers that “Hey these are actual games here’s what they’re about” the whole ad looks like a string of demo videos put together. That’s the point of this article.
I’m sorry I failed to mention that it’s an old ad, but if you look at it’s Youtube page you’ll see that people didn’t stop watching it after 2006. It’s right here on the net where somewhere someone who still doesn’t have a PS3 but is interested in getting one can see it. Which means my post is still relevant.
No I totally agree that the ‘ladies and gentlemen’ series of adverts were much better than this, and imo have been their best ad campaign yet.
But you don’t mention this once in the article, the whole point of something like this is to be self-explanatory, there shouldn’t be any need for further clarification in the comments section for people to understand it.
“The whole ad looks like a string of demo videos put together. That’s the point of this article.”
So if I understand what you’re saying correctly, the point of this is to tell people that the adverts released before the PS3 was weren’t actually very good…??
