Desktop Connect Vnc App: and Just Like That, Flash on the iPad!
April 4th, 2010
If you ask me, the perfect tablet would be a combination of the iPad and the JooJoo; i.e. an iPad with a camera, support for Flash and a USB port. Fortunately for (future) iPad owners, the Desktop Connect app by Antecea takes care of two of those missing features. In a nutshell, Desktop Connect lets you remotely view and use a desktop computer, meaning you can view, use and edit files from your main computer without having to transfer them to the iPad, reducing the need for a USB port. Want to play Flash games or watch Flash videos? No problem.

As you can see in the screenshot above, Desktop Connect lets you “use” any OS that your desktop has, be it OS X or *gasp!* Windows, or even Linux. Here’s a quick demo of the app by TechnoBuffalo‘s Brandon Miniman:
Now all the iPad lacks is a camera. No actually it still needs a USB port. You can purchase Desktop Connect at the iTunes store (link opens iTunes) for $12 (USD).

Cheater!
Look all I have to say about this is, if apple didn’t make such a crappy product, then you wouldn’t need to spend $12 to make your Ipad do what your computer already does. Basically all this says to me is, “Wow I can’t do shit on my IPad, how am I going to make it do what my laptop does, which is all I wanted it to do any way” Everything, App or Docking station, that Apple puts out for the Ipad to make it do things without adding flash or multi-tasking directly is just them trying to cover up for the obvious short comings. Congrats Apple you got the first practical tablet on the market, now you just need to make it useful. I’m waiting on Notion Ink’s Adam.
I bought a gtablet (Viewsonic) and it does what a laptop does, not always as effectively but it’s amazing. It has the Android 2.2 OS. Unlike virtually all tablets, this one has a standard USB port. I can connect a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a jump drive (also called thumb drives), etc. It works seamlessly with my PC and the number of apps available is far beyond unbelievable. The most wonderful thing is… the cost is half what an iPad would cost. I even found a leather carry case with a USB keyboard built into it that works with the gtablet. The only bad thing is, like most tablets, it doesn’t come with a book. So, there is a slight learning curb.
