An increasing number of home theater appliances and media player devices have at least one USB port built-in, which makes it easy to share content from an external storage device, but not directly from a computer. It acts like a network cable – simply connect one end to a computer and the other end to a USB-enabled HDTV, Blu-ray player, etc. and you’ll be able to access the publicly available files on the computer.
Basically, what it attempts to do is cut out the step of having to transfer files to a USB flash drive if you don’t want to bother with that. From what I understand the cable only provides a way for your appliance to access files.
