USB Typewriters: the Ultimate Retro Keyboards

by Paul Strauss

Miss the arduously slow process of typing on a mechanical typewriter? Me neither. But if you’re longing for that 5 word-per-minute typing speed, you might want to check out these retro typewriters that have been converted into USB keyboards.

You’ve got to hand it to Jack Zylkin of usbtypewriters for his handiwork. He takes old typewriters from the dark ages of office equipment and convert them into keyboards you can use with modern computers.

Here’s a video of one of the modded keyboards in action (with an iPad as its screen).

A fully-modded USB typewriter will set you back about $400 to $500 (USD), or Jack will take your old typewriter and outfit it for you for $200. He also sells kits for $75 to $150 if you’re feeling electronically-inclined. You can check out the full selection over at usbtypewriter’s Etsy shop.

Hmm… what’s that ugly, awkward white box sticking out of the side of the iPad??? ಠ_ಠ …
