White iPhone 4 Kit Converts Vanilla iPhone to White, Seller From Genius to Criminal?

You don’t have to wait until Spring 2011 to get a white iPhone 4 – if you already have the default black one, that is. Fei Lam, a 17-year old college student out of Queens, New York is selling a conversion kit for the iPhone 4 which is supposedly of such great quality that “FaceBook employees, undisclosed celebrities, accessory makers, and more” have bought the kit. I didn’t know FaceBook employees were the paragons of trendsetting.

While it seems like he has struck gold, Lam may not be in business for long – the New York Observer reports that Apple is preparing…something against Lam. The main reason? As Lam himself said, “I knew a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn”. Now, this statement could have several meanings. Lam could be getting actual white iPhone 4 cases from Foxconn. Or maybe he was able to obtain sample parts that he imitated, or perhaps he got specifications or molds (my money’s on this one) that he then used to make the kits. Whatever the case, Lam’s statement does imply that he got his hands on something that wasn’t supposed to leak out.

For now though, Lam’s website is up and still promoting the conversion kit. The full kit – front case, back case, home button plus the necessary tools – costs $279 (USD), but as of this writing there is a notice that says they’re “stopping orders until the following Monday”. No word if it’s a matter of keeping up with the demand, or if Apple’s legal hounds already sent something to the company.
