DIY Pulse Laser Pistol is So Much Better than a Laser Pointer

by Shane McGlaun

I am a big fan of lasers and laser guns. Sure, they are mostly the stuff of science fiction, but the military is making some great advances in using lasers on the battlefield today. I want something a bit more portable than a laser that needs an entire jet to carry though, and a geek named Patrick Priebe has made it.

Patrick took a lot of custom parts and crafted them into a very sci-fi looking pulse laser pistol dubbed the DIY Pulse Laser Gun. He says that the pulse is a kW-class and shoots a beam of coherent infrared light.

The beam is powerful enough to punch through a razor blade, plastic, and 5mm thick Styrofoam when focused. The construction uses Plexiglas, brass, aluminum, and each of the parts was handmade.

The project took about 70 hours to complete. I want one, and if you do too it seems Patrick will make one for you – if the price is right.

If you do buy one, just don’t shoot it at your eyes.
