Miniot Cover for iPad 2 Gives Your Tablet Wood

by Shane McGlaun

One of the coolest accessories I have seen for the iPad is the Smart Cover. You have probably seen this cover with its magnets that keep the iPad 2 propped up in several modes for more comfortable use. The magnets inside the case will turn the screen on and off and they can even stick the iPad 2 to your fridge if you are brave. If you like how Apple’s Smart Cover works, but you really want something with more style Miniot has it’s own version of the design.

The Miniot Cover for iPad 2 has magnets inside just like the real thing and but is made out of little sections of real wood. The maker says that all the edges are smooth and flush with the iPad. When you open or close the lid the screen will turn on and off.

The wood doesn’t flex in large segments like the official Smart Cover so you end up with more of a roll to prop your iPad 2 with than a triangle. You can see what I mean in the video demo:

The case will start shipping today at 50 euro (appx. $70 USD), and it looks damn good.

I keep hearing negative things about Miniot, I have this wood smart cover I found on Etsy that has a very strong magnetic attachment like the Apple cover:

I am a leather smart cover owner who also ordered the Miniot cover. I watched the Utube videos of other users showing problems with the Miniot cover. I received my cover June 7th and was pleasantly surprised! The magnets are very powerful and even without the hinge, when folded the covers magnets hold quite well. I am disappointed with the Apple Smart cover. Over time the cover leaves stains on both the back and the front where the microfibre contacts the Ipsd 2. I do have Invisible Shield on both the front and the back. I’m not sure the staining would occur if I didn’t have the shield installed. I do know that if I didn’t have the Invisible Shield installed I would have scratches from the microfibre picking up dust when folded and used as a stand. Both covers have positive an negative aspects. Since the Invisible Shield has a lifetime warranty, I simply replace the cover when it becomes stained. I am hoping the Miniot won’t stain like the Smart Cover. I also noticed the Smart Cover leather has begun to separate from the microfibre and the plastic separator sheets have been exposed along the edge.
