Speakers come in all shapes, sizes and colors, but this is one of the first that I’ve seen that completely folds down flat, making it extremely portable, especially if that’s the kind of thing you need to share your tunes. FYLM is the perfect size to fit in a bag or notebook and it won’t take up much space.

FYLM unfolds and attaches to itself using a magnetic latch. It uses a film speaker that’s less than 0.25mm thick, allowing it to be a lot less cumbersome than other portable speakers. It’s supposed to deliver full and rich directional sound, but that claim needs to be tested. The FYLM speaker needs no battery, as it’s powered by your music device’s 3.5mm audio jack – which means it’s unlikely to be very loud.

It will come in several different colors, each with matching cables. It was created by the Design Affairs Studio. No price nor availability has yet been set as the product is still under development.

While I have some large headphones at home, I always carry earbuds with me because they are just so small and convenient. This new earbud adapter is supposed to expand the usefulness of earbuds, allowing them to become headphones.

These Ear Adapters were created by the Chilean-born, Paris-based designer JC Karich, and allow users to transform earbuds into over-the-ear headphones. This means that you can take your earbuds on the go, and when you want the stability or looks of headphones you can have them easily enough.

The whole thing is 3D-printed and even comes with cushioning. If you like the design, you can freely download the schematics from Thingiverse and print them out on a 3D printer.

The only bad thing I can think of is the price, which is more expensive than most iPad models. It definitely looks comfortable, and the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A3 is certainly distinctive for something you’ll probably end up using a lot at home.

The triangular module features speakers mounted on both sides, as well as an orientation sensor to activate the right stereo speakers, depending on the way that you are using the stand. Sound is provided by a Class D amplifier, and the speakers have an effective frequency range of 60 to 15,000 Hz.

If the diminutive Jambox is too small for your amplifying tastes, then check out the Big Jambox that Jawbone just released. It’s basically the same as the Jambox, except that it’s bigger. It’s still wireless and will work with any Bluetooth-enabled device.

The speaker also includes an echo-canceling microphone so that you can speak with your buddies without missing a beat.

There are all sorts of docks available for your iPad, but this one is about twice the price of a basic 16GB iPad, so it’s definitely in a league of it’s own. This designer dock, created by electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, is called the AeroPad Two. Despite its name, it’s not going to help your iPad fly off, but it will fly away with ten Benjamins out of your wallet.

The AeroPad Two will not only dock your iPad, but it will also take on your iPhone or iPod Touch thanks to its 30-pin dock connector. It has four 30-watt speakers and an 80-watt subwoofer. There’s also an integrated USB port to plug in USB flash drives, and it supports WMA, AIFF, WAV and MP3 files.

The dock measures almost 34″ wide by 12″ tall, and weighs in at a hefty 22 pounds. It’s made from stainless steel with chrome accents, and is available in either black, white or bamboo. About the only thing not to like about this substantial dock is the price. The AeroPad Two will set you back €699 (~$924 USD). If you’ve got the money to spare, you can place a pre-order here for delivery starting this September.

If you’ve got an iPad 2 or 3rd Gen iPad, You’ve probably used a Smart Cover and noticed that there is a bit of wasted space when the Smart Cover is all folded up as a triangle to act as a support for your iPad. Some clever designers decided that they could put that wasted space to good use, and created a speaker that could fit into that void.

The Rocketfish Sound Prism was designed by CRE8 Design Studio, and it’s a portable unit made to work with iPads, though since it uses Bluetooth it will work with smartphones and other tablets as well. The speaker attaches itself magnetically and it can hide away inside an Apple Smart Cover when folded up. Sound comes out of both ends, so its not obscured by the iPad or its cover. That’s a pretty smart design in my book.

The MSRP for this speaker is $79.99 (USD) but Best Buy supposedly has it on sale for $49.99 (though the link is currently broken.)

The Foco is another acoustic amplifier for your iPad. It’s basically like the Amplifiear but the shape is a bit more conservative and practical. It’s designed to make sharing tunes or watching movies a lot easier and you won’t have to lug around heavy powered speakers.

Foco adheres to the back of your iPad thanks to a removable sticky pad. If you’re wondering about the name, Foco is Spanish for focus – as in the way it focuses the sound. It’s supposed to work with different protective cases as well, so you won’t have to take your iPad out of its protection in order to use Foco.

Based on the test of the Foco prototype the video below, the Foco can increase amplitude by about 10 to 13dB over the stock iPad speaker.

The Foco will work with the 3rd-gen iPad and iPad 2, and you’ll need to pledge at least $6(USD) to get yours over at Kickstarter.

Whether you’re a prize-winning cyclist, a hipster or just a human being who loves to ride bikes and does not fit a niche or stereotype, it’s not a good idea to wear earphones while cycling. They impair hearing and can get tangled, causing you to be distracted and perhaps die a horrible death, albeit one with a soundtrack. Better go with something like the SleekSpeak.

Despite its unusual appearance, the SleekSpeak is simply a Bluetooth speaker, optimized for bicycles. It has a shock- and water-resistant rubber case, a silicone rubber strap, and an internal battery that lasts for 12 hours and is charged via USB.

Inventors David Meisenholder and MK Li claim that the SleekSpeak can output audio at over 80dB. It probably won’t have decent bass, but 80dB is pretty loud. Meisenholder told backers that he’ll be uploading a demo video of the speaker soon, but for now have a look at their pitch video:

Bike on over to Kickstarter before May 9th, and pledge at least $69 (USD) to have a chance to own one of the first SleekSpeaks. If it becomes popular, you can say that you had one before it was cool. Not that anyone will care.

If you’re always on the go, and are looking for quality headphones that aren’t über-flashy or crazy-expensive, then check out these two new models from Pioneer. One of them is targeted at audiophiles, while the other model adds noise cancellation for the masses. The SE-MJ591 and SE-NC21M are lightweight, foldable, and come with a carrying case.

The SE-MJ591 feature 40mm drivers and is the more expensive of the two. They have soft ear pads, and a comfortable headband. They are supposed to match up well with high-end audio sound systems. They will be available at the end of April and sell for $299 (USD).

The SE-NC21M offer affordable noise cancellation, with a single AAA battery. They will reduce external noises by up to 90% and work 120 hours on one battery. The good thing is that they will continue to work as normal headphones once the battery runs out. They will sell for $119.

If you’re annoyed with the tiny built-in speaker of the iPad and want something that will beef up the sound, check out the Amplifiear from Nonlinear Studio. It’s basically a clip-on device that will enhance your iPad’s integrated speaker. It works by redirecting and reflecting the sound of the iPad through a Mickey Mouse ear-shaped cup.

The Amplifear slides onto the top corner of the tablet, giving it an ear-like appendage. The lightweight and recyclable plastic ear was conceived by Evan Clabots. He created it because the back-facing speaker of the iPad has less than optimal sound.

It comes with a tension clip that will fit the 3rd generation iPad and iPad 2, and can easily be removed and tossed in your bag.

Amplifiear was launched as a Kickstarter project, and you’ll need to pledge at least $15(USD) to get yours.

Sennheiser makes some really good audio products, and they’ve just upped the ante with some top of the line earbuds and an accompanying amplifier. If you’ve got deep pockets and audio quality is important to you, then these might be worth your attention.

The IE 800 earphones are made out of ceramic and will cost you a whopping €599 (~$787 USD) for a pair. They have an incredibly wide 5 to 46,000Hz audio frequency range, 7mm drivers, and have stainless steel vents at the back that are supposedly there to improve bass and airflow. To provide power for these headphones, you could use any amp, or you could go with the one Sennheiser built just for these earphones. The HDVD 800 amp retails for an equally crazy €1499 (~$1,973 USD). The amp has a body made out anodized aluminum, supports 24-bit 192kHz digital sources, and was specifically designed to work with the HD 800, HD 700, HD 650 and HD 600 headphones.

The amp and the earphones are expected to go on sale this Summer. Will you be putting down a big chunk of your hard earned cash on these?

Do you love your old vinyl records, but have nothing to play them on? Then check out this amplifier/dock solution for iPhones. It was actually made out of a vinyl that’s been reshaped to work as an acoustic amplifier. It’s an good way of reusing old records when you no longer play them.

It was created by British product designer Paul Cocksedge who uses a modified 12-inch vinyl record to create each acoustic speaker. It’s an interesting design, leveraging its horn-shape to amplify the sound. To make each dock, he gently heats and then molds the vinyl record, taking care not to damage its original grooves.

They can be bought in the UK from select retailers, and I also found it on the Openers site in Japan, where it’s listed for 7875 yen (~$97 USD).

I’ve gotten used to using my headphones almost everywhere, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is like that. When you are on the go and want to share your tunes with your friends, you need some kind of portable amplifier. LIL KIKR doubles as an battery-free amplifier and a mobile stand, which is perfect if you want to play music on the go.

Designed by Mike Henry, the compact and minimal LIL KIKR also functions as stand and charging dock for your iPhone. It will blast music up to 10dB louder than the iPhone’s built-in speaker. There’s even a channel to amplify the sounds going into the microphone, so you can use it as a speakerphone or for Facetime calls. It’s made from machined anodized aluminum, along with a pair of rubber-covered stainless steel kickstands. For charging, there’s an integral slot which can hold on to the included 30-pin charging cable.

The LIL KICKR is designed to snugly fit the iPhone 4/4S, but another model, LIL KIKR+ will also be compatible with older iPhones and some iPods. You’ll need to pledge at least $50(USD) over on Kickstarter to get your own.

Birdwatchers looking for rare species definitely won’t recognize this flightless bird. But that doesn’t mean they won’t want one to land on their desktops. That’s because the bird-shaped Wrenz is one of the cooler looking portable speakers to come along in a while.

Made by Gavio, the avian-inspired Wrenz is a compact speaker that can plug into your smartphone. Each Wrenz speaker is wrapped in a mirrored finish, and conceals its audio and USB charging connections behind its tail feathers.

While it’s not going to blow any eardrums with its 2 watts of power, 32mm speaker driver, and 180Hz to 20KHz frequency response, it’ll definitely sing a sweet song at higher frequencies. The speaker is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery which should give you about 9 hours on a charge.

The Wrenz sells for $89.90 Singapore Dollars (~$71 USD) over at Gavio, so it’s not exactly cheep (typo intended), but I still love the way it looks.

I like to listen to music on my headphones in the dark, but this concept by Joe Doucet takes headphone immersion a step further. The OneSense headphones were designed to discourage other people from interrupting your listening session by blacking out the world around you.

The OneSense headphones block of sights and sounds of the outer world to focus the listeners attention to the music that he is hearing. The spikes are supposed to be taken as a warning, clearly signaling to passersby that the listener wants to be left alone in his or her personal music bubble.

I’m pretty sure that these headphones won’t get made, but you can probably jury-rig something yourself, using a blindfold of some sort. Either way, the concept is interesting.

The OneSense headphones will be on display at the Meet My Project design show held in Milan, which runs until the end of April, and in NYC during Design Week, held at the end of May.

Ever wanted to listen to something without anyone around you hearing it? While you certainly could go with a pair of headphones, there’s something that just seems that much cooler about using a parametric speaker instead. Parametric speaker technology forces highly-directional sound from the front of its speaker elements, so you only hear the sound if you’re standing in a direct line with the speaker.

Up until now, parametric speakers were pretty difficult to come by, and generally very expensive. The Soundlazer aims to change that, offering individuals the opportunity to play with their own complete parametric speakers for as little as $175(USD). The Soundlazer uses an array of 39 piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers, which work together to generate an incredibly directional audio beam. Stand in front of the speaker, and you hear perfectly clear sound. Stand to the side, and you hear nothing. You can connect the Soundlazer directly to the 3.5mm audio port on your computer or media player, or can also experiment with custom filters, compressors and sound algorithms via its built in USB port, and Analog Devices DSP programming tool, Sigma Studio.

Soundlazer creator Richard Haberkern is currently raising funds for production of the device over on Kickstarter, and has already raised over $44,000 of his $48,000 goal with 45 days to go. So it’s almost a certainty that the Soundlazer will go into production this Summer. Prices range from $50 for a pair of bare-bones circuit boards to $175 for a functional version without a case, to $275-$300 for the version with the red anodized aluminum case shown here.

Last time we checked in with YouTuber bd594, his robotic band was playing House of the Rising Sun, and before that some Marilyn Manson. But despite their melodic charms, I always thought his band of electronic misfits was missing something… vocals. So for the latest digital track, bd594 added something special – a DECtalk Express voice synthesizer.

So the Linux-powered EOL band now has a robot snare, bass drum, tambourine, keyboard, and HP scanner AND vocals. Here they are, performing an awesomely geeky rendition of Maroon 5′s Moves Like Jagger:

If you thought that sounded a bit like Stephen Hawking on lead vocals, that’s because he used to use a DECtalk Express back in the 1980s as his voice.
