This Bender Bending Rodriguez iPhone case could be just the thing you’re looking for. And while his shiny metal ass is nowhere to be seen on this handmade felt case, there’s no doubt that you’re a Futurama freak when you whip this thing out of your pocket. And if you act in the next 4.2 milliseconds, you’ll get the matching Bender plush keychain for absolutely free! Actually, it just happens to be part of the $24 (USD) bundle that includes both the case and the keychain, but that last sentence sounded so much better to me.

My wife uses her iPhone for listening to music a lot. She uses these cheap pink earphones when she listens that sound worse than the stock Apple earphones. The other day I got a really nice set of earphones for her from V-Moda that sound great. I handed them to her and told her they sound much better than what she has and her first response was those aren’t very cute. I’ll never understand women. It seems many care more for what something looks like than how it works.

A company called chicBuds has some appropriately girly headphones that come in colors that would make Stevie Wonder say man that’s bright. You can get the things in a pink color that is typically only seen in an emo girl’s hair. If the pink isn’t obnoxious enough for you, a multi-color set is also available.

I wonder if the multi-color set was painted at a Blue Man Group concert. Either color headphones are available for $29.95 (USD) and will work with any gadget using a 3.5mm headphone jack. The headphones have 44mm drivers and a frequency response of 5Hz to 20KHz, not that the specs matter, they are (debatably) cute after all.

I have to say that tweets are the perfect way to send simple commands. Check out the video below to see the NIKO in action:

As Wired’s Charlie Sorrel said, books contain much of human knowledge, but they are quite hard to preserve or archive compared to other media. A setup invented by professor Masatoshi Ishikawa and his team at the University of Tokyo could change all of that. Ishikawa and company are working on a high-speed camera that takes 500 shots per second. One simply flips a book’s pages in front of the camera, and custom software takes care of aligning and flattening whatever distorted pages were captured.

Watch and be amazed. Freakin’ magic:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I really hope this technology gets refined and popularized. The benefits that the human race would gain from a digital, searchable database of all the world’s books and other written text is immeasurable. As amazing as that sounds, that may just be a part of Ishikawa’s awesome gifts to the world: at the heart of the scanner is what he calls the Super Vision Chip, and he and his team are looking at other applications for it, such as tracking individual bacteria and building a motion-capture system for video games.

I have two kids and when they were sick as babies, I usually didn’t get any sleep. The lack of sleep was typically more from my wife waking me up every five minutes asking me to go check on the baby to be sure he was still breathing. Typically I would say “of course he is breathing” and try to go back to sleep. It never worked because her paranoia is contagious and I would end up thinking OMG! What if he isn’t breathing and run to his room.

What I wish I had was something like this Sikker concept from Thanko Design. The thing has a bracelet that the mom wears and a similar one for the baby to wear. The idea is that some sort of tech synchronizes the bracelets with a base station.

The mom can look down at the bracelet and see important things like the baby’s temperature and the fact that the baby is breathing and stuff. The bracelet can also play music to lull the kid back to sleep and apparently it works like a baby monitor too. Judging by the Bluetooth logo on the base station, I am guessing that’s the tech in use here.

When I first saw this, I tried to remember if they ever came out with a Game Boy in these colors. I seem to remember that there were a lot of special editions that were exclusively available in Japan. Naturally, you could import them, but you’d pay the big bucks for that privilege.

As a professional timewaster, my wrists take a lot of punishment. Especially my right wrist; lately it has taken to zapping me with painful needles of hate, demanding that I stop using it. That came out a bit off. You know what I mean. That’s why I was hypnotized by the sight of the Ergoroller.

I can vividly imagine its soothing and healing effect on my wrist, the cold balls caressing my skin. Now that was really off. But I still want your balls, Ergoroller.

Then again, a simple cushion might still be more comfortable than this device. You can order the Ergoroller here for $25 (USD). Have any of you tried it? Know a better alternative? Share your thoughts in the comments, ’cause my wrist is just about ready to file the first ever human-body part divorce. I can feel it.

It looks like the BrainPort vision technology has now been tested on humans. It will now allow the visually-impaired to “see” things using their tongues!

The human test subject was a soldier, who was blinded in Iraq. The system consists of a small video camera attached to a pair of sunglasses. This is then connected to a device which is placed on the user’s tongue.

BrainPort converts visual signals into electrical impulses which are sent to the tongue. The intensity of the signal allows the user to figure out how close obstacles are in his or her path. I was actually trying to imagine how a tongue could “see”. It turns out that there’s a lot more to this technology than just sending jolts to your tongue…

“With the current system (arrays containing 100 to 600+ electrodes), study participants have been able to recognize high-contrast objects, their location, movement, and some aspects of perspective and depth. Trained blind participants use information from the tongue display to augment understanding of the environment. Our ongoing research with the BrainPort vision device demonstrates the great potential of tactile vision augmentation and we believe that these findings warrant further exploration. As a result, we are currently working on improvements to the tongue display hardware, software, and usability, and on overall device miniaturization.”

Maker/Problem-solver Steve Hoefer made an Arduino-based glove that can play Rock Paper Scissors. Why? Why the hell not! You think a nerd would pass up the opportunity to play with a computer? The glove has an accelerometer that detects when the user is shaking his fist to signify the beginning of a round. A flex sensor takes care of determining what move has been pulled off, i.e. whether you played rock, paper or scissors, and a layered edge-lit display shows what move the computer played. LEDs are used to show the score.

So how does the Arduino Mini Pro fare in Rock Paper Scissors? “It wins. A lot. And it adapts.” The glove remembers a user’s playing habits, so if you have a pattern of moves (whether you’re aware that you have a pattern of moves or not), the glove will adjust accordingly.

For example, if most of the time your opening move is Rock, then the glove will start using Paper as its initial move more often. Or if you usually play Paper twice in a row, then the glove will learn to play Scissors after your first Paper. It’s Rock Paper Scissors Championship Edition, and it seems that ironically, you’ll have a higher chance of winning if you don’t have a strategy and are totally random.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Tinkerers and hackers should check out Hoefer’s website for more details, as well as instructions, tips and the source code for the Arduino. Maybe you can build a glove that incorporates Lizard and Spock as well.

This new mobile phone out of China may look like your average smartphone, but under the hood it’s actually packing a tiny little projector. Too bad the images it produces look pretty horrendous.

The inappropriately named COOL GTW18 features a 3.2-inch 240 x 400 touchscreen display, and touts a built in LED mini-projector for playing back digital video files in MP4 format. On the inside, the camera projector (camjector?) has dual SIM slots and a pair of MicroSD memory card slots for storing your media files as well.

And while the device is clearly labeled “HD 1080P”, the guys at M8Cool say they couldn’t get the GTW18 to play back files at higher resolutions than 640×480. And it’s clear from this projected image, that the resolution is way less than 1080p anyhow. Maybe it’s VGA? But even that could be a stretch from the looks of it.

At least the image looks a little bit better when the phone is turned on its side (duh), and viewed up close. But the fact that you really need a dark room to view projected images, and they’re not much bigger than the screen itself sorta defeats the purpose. And battery life is only about 30 to 40 minutes with the projector turned on and playing back video.

In addition to the projector, the GTW18 has Wi-Fi connectivity, and a no-name web browser built in. Oh yeah, and it can tune in television stations and has a DVR. Analog TV, that is, not digital. So get ready to stare at lots and lots of static. At least you can record it for later, right?

If you’ve got any inkling to send off your hard earned money to China to order one of these things, you owe it to yourself to at least check out the video clip below to see the GTW18 showing off its postage-stamp sized projection capability, while listening to some completely inappropriate elevator music in the background.

If this is really what they mean when they say “device convergence,” please keep my gadgets separate.

I went through a phase where I loved Japanese watches. I still do, but for now, I use my cell phone as a watch. That being said, those guys over at TokyoFlash continue to come up with some great ideas. This time, they’ve created this cool curved E-ink display watch, which might become a reality.

The E Clock can tell the time using normal numbers, or through patterns of dashes and lines that you have to decipher. That’s not all. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth, and will alert you via vibration to tell you when you’ve got incoming calls or text messages.

The band is made from flexible stainless steel, which forms a neat-looking bracelet. This is the part I really like. If this design gets enough votes, TokyoFlash will actually produce this thing. Now that’s cool. So head on over there to vote for it!

[TokyoFlash via DVice]

I’m sure some of you are familiar with the name Stuart Hughes by now. He’s the crazy chap who takes gadgets and coats them in sometimes turd-colored gold, diamonds, and a bit of other gems and other rare shit and then sells the resulting mortal sin for bundles of cash. Now he’s selling the world’s most expensive television, the PrestigeHD Supreme Rose Edition. The price? £1,500,000 ($2.27 M USD). Does it do 3D? No. But wait ’til you hear what it’s made of. I tell you, Mr. Hughes has gone insane.

The PrestigeHD Supreme Rose is a 55″ HDTV, with a base and outer frame made of 28 kilograms of solid 18ct rose gold. The outer frame is “adorned with 72 brilliant round cut 1ct IF Flawless diamonds” and a mix of sunstone & amethyst, while the inner frame is made of hand sewn Alligator skin. Stuart Hughes will only make three of these; any more and the world will run out of gold and diamonds, and the lord almighty will come and smite his ass. $2.27 M a bit too expensive for you? Then you might want to settle for the budget edition PrestigeHD Supreme, which only has 19 kilograms of gold and 48 diamonds, and thus is much more affordable at £1,000,000 ($1.5 M USD).

Apricorn’s latest USB device is perfect for people who only have a netbook for a computer. In exchange for one of your tiny computer’s USB port, the Aegis NetDock gives you 4 USB ports – 2 of them powered – a dual-layer DVD burner, and a 2.5″ SATA hard drive enclosure. What’s nice about the Aegis is that it’s very portable, measuring only 6.25 in x 5.75 in x 2.125 in.

If you’re planning on buying either an external HDD or an external optical drive, you should seriously consider getting the Aegis instead. It comes with a power adapter though, and Apricorn doesn’t say if the optical drive or the ports are still usable even if the Aegis isn’t plugged in to an outlet. You can pre-order the Aegis NetDock at Apricorn’s website. The NetDock itself costs $89 (USD), but you can also buy one with a 5400 RPM 500 GB hard drive pre-installed for $189. Not bad. If only the NetDock also had a 17″ LCD. And an additional gig of RAM. And a numeric keypad. And a decent video card.

It looks like nightmares are becoming a reality for the Japanese. A new cell phone from KDDI, that’s packaged attractively as a wrist phone, will be able to tell if you’re slacking off at work. It will then rat you out to your boss!

This is definitely some Orwellian technology. The phone’s accelerometer is sensitive enough to track the movements of your arm. If don’t move a lot, the phone will report you to your boss.

KDDI claims that it can tell if you’re walking, going up stairs, or cleaning. It will also tell if you are taking a snooze, spending time idling. I can just imagine the situation. A new salary-man gets a job and to top things off, he gets a brand new wristphone watch. A month later, he’s informed that he lost his job because he wastes too much time doing nothing. No thanks.

Every male on the planet has at least one memory of crushing his gonads on the cross tube of their bike as a kid. We all go through that stage where we aren’t quite tall enough for the big bike, but the small bike is just too short. Enviably one parent or the other just buys the tall bike because they don’t want to have to replace your bike in a few months. The result is you end up getting racked.

A new bike concept has turned up on Yanko Design that may well be the best thing to happen to gonad protection since the protective cup was invented. The concept has a frame that can be stretched to a length that is perfect for the rider.

The best part of the design is that the entire tube and seat moves up and down. That means your kid won’t crush the family jewels. The concept is called the Bike 10 to 15 and even has disc brakes. Where was this when I was a kid?

This is a great win for Photoshop and an epic fail for the iPad. I know for a fact that maxi pad box comes from Canada, since it’s bilingual. Every time I see another maxi-pad joke, I still wonder what was going through the minds of the iPad naming team. Of course, there mustn’t have been a woman among them – and not one of them ever saw this sketch from Mad TV…
