What’s red, shiny, goes fast, and looks like a vehicular accident? The Pontiac Aztek, that’s what. I’d rather have the Snaefell, François Knorreck’s lovingly handcrafted car-motorcycle hybrid. It’s easier to think of it as a motorcycle with a car-like sidecar, because I don’t think that you can drive – or steer – with the car half.

Knorreck reportedly spent 10,000 hours and €15,000 (approx. $22,300 (USD)) to build this one of a kind vehicle. The Snafell is a combination of a Laverda motorcycle which Knorreck bought in 1976 and had already modified to be a sport bike, and the custom-built carbon fiber and polyester sidecar. The sidecar’s parts were culled from various automobiles, including a Volkswagen Golf GTI, a Citroen Xantia and an Audi 80.

The Snaefell – which incidentally is also the name of three volcanoes in Iceland – is powered by the Laverda’s 1000cc engine. I barely know anything about vehicles, so I don’t know if the triple exhaust is necessary, but damn if it doesn’t add to the quirkiness of this ride.

The sidecar has a gull-wing door and has a car seat, complete with seat belts. Say what you will about the Snaefell, but it’s sidecar might just be the most comfortable and safest one on the planet.

There should be more pics at Knorreck’s website, I just don’t know for sure because Internet fame has brought down the site. I really want to see it in action! Man this thing is weird.

These plush, handmade Resident Evil grenades will sadly not explode on impact… but that does mean they can be thrown over and over, to the great detriment and humiliation of your victim. Or you can just throw ‘em at the television, which is what creator Id decided to do.

Ah, lovely, colorful, and not-quite-deadly. Two out of three ain’t bad, as they say. Id’s softer, gentler grenades are at least life-size, so you know they’re satisfying in the hand, even if they are significantly more squeezable than a real grenade. Also? Less useful against zombies, or not-zombies, as the case may be (those last Resident Evil games have been veering away from the normal undead menace, after all… if you can call any violent, face-pounding menace of any sort normal).

But they look great in Photoshop, and really, that should be enough for anyone.

Created by Dutch designer Stijn Ossevoort, Flare is a dress embroidered with wind-sensitive lights, arranged to form dandelions. Just imagine – it’s your wedding day, and it’s at the beach, just like you’ve always imagined it. You’re walking along the shore, the wind caressing your dress, not only making it ripple but also causing lights to twinkle. And as the chilly waves reach out and gently surprise your feet, you feel…a tingle. Then a buzz. Then a full on electrocution. Way to go out in style.

Just kidding. And even if the electronics on Flare are affected by water, I think the worst that could happen would be the lights shorting out. I hope.

I like how the electronics enhance but don’t overwhelm the dress. Ossevoort’s work shows that geeky fashion goes way beyond Star Wars t-shirts and video game-themed sneakers. Not that there’s anything bad about those.

With Turkey Day just around the corner, I figured it was safe for me to start mentioning some Christmas geek goodies – and these ones are a great way to get you in a festive mood. I am absolutely in love with these laser-cut video game controller ornaments.

Created by Dave Rollins of Digits (with the help of Ponoko’s laser fabrication services), these acrylic holiday gamer ornaments are the perfect addition to any game geek’s Christmas tree, Hanukkah bush, or Secular shrub.

Each set comes with 7 ornaments, including 2-dimensional cutout versions of Wii, N64, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, NES, PS2 and Sega Genesis controllers. The ornaments each measure between 3 and 4 inches wide, so they’re a bit smaller than the real deals.

They’re available in 6 colors, including red, white, yellow, black, clear, and red-tinted acrylic, and can be found over at Digits’ Ponoko or Etsy shops for just $20 bucks a set.

Buy a bunch and cover your whole tree. I’m hoping next year that Dave will make some matching console ornaments and maybe an Atari paddle controller or two.

How’d you like to own the fastest and coolest looking PC on your block, and at the same time help find a cure for cancer – and then write the whole thing off your tax bill? You’d be sold, right? Well that’s exactly what’s going on here.
The gorgeous, glowing computer is really the ultimate gaming PC. For starters, it looks amazing. But under the hood, it’s a serious workhorse of a machine, that’ll surely pwn any computer you currently own.

At the core of the system is an Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition CPU, and a pair of nVidia GeForce GTX 295 graphics cards running in SLI mode. The system has 12 GB of DDR3 RAM, and 2.5 TB of hard disk. There’s also a Logitech G19 gaming keyboard, a custom Razer Boomslang mouse, and 13 video games thrown in for good measure. In total, there’s over $10,000 worth of components in this bad boy.

Parts and labor for this amazing system were donated by nVidia, ASUS, Crucial, Danger Den, Intel, Performance PCs, SilverStone, Smooth Creations, TigerDirect, Western Digital and the whole thing was put together by Out of The Box Mods.

Currently, the system is up for sale on eBay, with a bid price of $4,000 – but I’m certain that will climb as the auction nears its end on 11/24. For more details head on over to the Charity Case Mod website. 100% of the auction proceeds (after auction fees) will go directly to the charity – so bid early and bid often.

Pixel art can be made out of all sorts of units, from painted squares to beads… but one item I haven’t previously seen used to product pixel art? Toilet paper rolls. Well, folks, we’ll never be able to say that again. Mark the date.

That doesn’t look so hard, right? If you run across a good deal on a lot of toilet paper, maybe you can even make your own, right? Creator Beru Betto’s even provided a template for you to use, with all sorts of variations, too… including the Prince from Katamari Damacy. Rolled up from rolls. It seems almost too perfect.

Here’s a look at the patterns provided:

Note that the pattern isn’t necessarily toilet paper specific–you could use all sorts of items. But now that you’ve seen this version, why do anything else?

Each one is built from the finest electronic components, with an optical resolution of 1600 dpi, and with microswitches rated for over 1 million clicks. The mice also feature a stiff, but bendable cable that keeps the cord from getting in your way. There’s also a unique sound-wheel control which kicks in to adjust your system’s volume when you click the scroll wheel.

The handmade wooden mice are available in Bubinga, Makor, Sapele, and Ebony woods from exotic locations like Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Sri Lanka. Of course, being a luxury item, you can’t expect them to be cheap. Prices for the mice range from €668 to €859 (appx. $996 to $1281 USD). If you’ve got money to burn, you can get your hands on one of AlestRukov’s mice here.

Ahhh, the holidays are nearly upon us, and you know what that means: Pac-Man. He’s already invaded weddings, after all. Now he can also hang out under your Christmas tree, if you are arboreally inclined. Though I’m sure this tree skirt could be spread about under other things if you were really determined.

The Pac-Man tree skirt (bound to be at least as interesting as the actual gifts sitting on it) is an impressive 41 inches in diameter. That’s a lot of black felt spread about on your floor. Sure, you can go bigger, but really, how much living room do most of us have? It’s available at Etsy for only $14, too. I challenge you to roll on down to your favorite Xmas decor outlet and find something half so cool for so little.

You’re probably not going to get Pac-Man at Target, for that matter. Oh, you might find him somewhere, but in the holiday department? Good luck.

Actually, this wasn’t the main wedding cake, but actually a groom’s cake that blogger The Domestic Scientist recently made for a friend’s wedding. And while the cake is fully edible (black icing, gumpaste ghosts and all) you might not want to try and eat the Pac-Couple – as they’re crafted from Super Sculpey. (Unless you’re into eating modeling clay.)

I’ve seen some pretty impressive geek costumes over the years, but this one might just take the cake. This precision-engineered Tauntaun costume has to be way up there at the top of the list.

Created by Scott Holden for the recent Zone Ball in Sacramento, this Tauntaun not only looks great, it actually walks. Scott modeled out the original plan for the behemoth costume using SolidWorks, and then built out a stilt mechanism to stand on while walking around in it. And no, those aren’t the rider’s real legs dangling there on either side – they’re actually hidden inside standing on the stilts.

He built the Tauntaun’s main body using PVC pipe and fabricated custom stilts with snowboard bindings to hold the wearer’s feet and legs in place while walking.

Scott created a custom silicone mold for the head, and airbrushed the details on a final foam cast form. To give the beast its fuzzy coat, Scott covered it with layers of faux fur, fastened to the body with zip-ties.

Looking for a fun way to wrap your presents this holiday season? Nothing says “I’m a complete gamer geek” like these Tetris block gift boxes.

Each colorful Tetris brick-shaped box measures 1 3/8 inches (3.5cm) deep (other dimensions vary), which means they’re not going to be big enough to hold that Lexus that you planned on giving me this Christmas. However, they are large enough to hold small trinkets like jewelry, candy, and assorted stocking stuffers.

You can grab a set of 7 Tetris boxes for $15 (USD) over at littlewhitedog’s Etsy shop. Keep in mind that they’re shipping from Dublin, Ireland, so you’ll want to allow plenty of time if you want ‘em to wrap this year’s presents.

The aluminum case is decorated with UV green acrylic sheets, lit up with 4 cathode lights, and then placed on pedestal, allowing it to rotate a full 360°.

Aside from the ION 330 ITX, the PC is equipped with an x64 SSD by Corsair, 4GB Twin2X4096-6400C5 DDR by Corsair, a 90-Watt Pico power supply unit by Logic Supply, Windows Vista Premium, and an LG GH22 DVD Writer drive. Here’s a more thorough look at the little green thing:

The design is too loud – and too green – for my taste, but the fact that it rotates makes it one of the best mods that I’ve seen. Check out the Casemod Blog for more pics and info.

When it comes to Katamari Damacy, it’s all about the King and the Prince. The Queen gets no love and she hardly even shows up in the games! Of course, as full of himself as the King is, do you blame her for not hanging around? It’s a shame, though, because she is completely adorable.

I admit it would take something pretty horrible to not look cute as a plushie (and sometimes, even that doesn’t work), but this just makes me want to see more of the elusive Queen. deviantARTist Min-of-the-Cosmos must agree, because this is the second Queen plushie to turn up in her gallery.

But the other characters get love, too, like the adorable Prince.

I kind of want to coat them with honey and see if they’ll stick together in a giant (gooey) katamari.

Nintendo’s wildly popular Smash Bros. franchise is a dimension-shattering, world-colliding crossover in itself, but deviantART member Nakabeast added another delicious layer of nerdity by assigning Dungeons & Dragons alignments to some of the series’ most popular characters, like series newcomer Solid Snake:

If you think about it, Solid Snake can’t really be anything but Chaotic Good. But I’m sure some of the other entries will ignite forums and websites with warring geeks, disputing the accuracy of the assignments. Oh, Nakabeast, you thought you were merely making a fun poster, didn’t you? You don’t know what you’ve started.

For example, a bunch of jokesters at Reddit point out that Link bashes pots, steals from shops and beats up helpless poultry and so he can’t be Lawful Good. Also, how the heck does Koopa embody Lawful Evil? Download the full-sized version at Nakabeast’s deviantART page, grab some food and drinks and your AD&D rulebooks, and start debating!

You lucky Alpine School District students and your Space Education Center with its spaceship simulators. I hate you. All I had when I was a kid were teachers who liked to gossip and humiliate students who didn’t go to church. I hope you never find a buyer for your fancy schmancy USS Galileo, which has “stations, networking, speakers, a main viewscreen, and anything a futuristic starship should have” built in. The auction itself doesn’t say that it’s supposed to be a replica of the Star Trek USS Galileo, but it is it’s quite a ways off from the design of the real deal. And I hate it.

Eh, who am I kidding. The auction still has 19 and a half days to go and the current bid is already at $3,200 (USD). I’m pretty sure the simulator cost way more than that though. Here’s a few more pics of this stupid simulator. I wish we had one at our school. But we didn’t so I hate it.

Rich nerds and awesome schools, go to Public Surplus and bid on this baby. You don’t want your child, or your students, or yourself to not have a spaceship simulator. Trust me, the pain never goes away. Damn you awesome schools and your awesome amenities! Damn you all!
