Fans of the old Super Nintendo Entertainment System will immediately recognize the cartridge in the slot below as that of the classic The Legend of Zelda. But what’s cool about this custom-built arcade cabinet is that it plays any SNES cartridge, while looking awesome.

The cabinet was built by Reddit contributor Echoobrain, and it has a full arcade quality joystick and buttons built in. The system offers Link and Mario details on the side, along with a Triforce on the front – and it’s crowned with a proper Nintendo logo of course. While the arcade controller is limited to single-player gaming, there is a hidden controller in the front drawer that lets you play 2-player games too.

Echoobrain doesn’t say much more about the build, but it’s pretty great in my opinion. The only thing better would be if it could play ALL Nintendo games, not just the SNES – but sometimes less is more, and it’s not like the SNES didn’t have a ton of great games. Echoobrain does mention that he might add a small MAME system inside the cabinet that he could toggle to for other arcade games down the road though.

These funny pixelated movie posters were created by Colorado graphic designer Eric Palmer. While some may call them them 8-bit art, they kind of look like they wouldn’t be out of place on an a 16-bit system like the Sega Genesis or SNES. That being said, most of these movies weren’t even around when either 8 or 16-bit consoles were all of the rage.

Each of these posters is unmistakable for what it is: a tribute to the original movie, and there’s always a nice little twist. I had fun discovering these. The Kill Bill poster is one of the best. It would look great on a yellow t-shirt. The Titanic poster is pretty funny too. Check out more of Eric’s designs in the gallery below:

Pahito designed pixelated versions of famous superheroes from DC Comics, Marvel, Dark Horse and other publishers. You’ll find superheroes and supervillains alike, including Superman, Batman, Joker, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and others.

The best part is that his Pixelithos are available via his Society6 site as art prints, iPad, iPhone, MacBook and PC laptop skins. The skins cost from $15 to $30(USD) and are available as the large ensemble image that features all of the characters he’s redesigned.

There have been numerous handhelds out there which can play games from the old 8-bit and 16-bit era consoles. Personally, I have the Dingoo A-320, which handles the job nicely. But there’s a new player in town which looks like it could be good, and it’s also cheap.

The PlayMore handheld can play games from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Nintendo NES/Famicom, SNES and Gameboy, GBC/GBA right out of the box. Games are played on a 2.8″ 300×240 resolution screen (or is that 320×240?) The system looks pretty nicely designed, and has both a D-Pad and analog stick, as well as small L and R shoulder buttons. It’s not clear how these are used with older console games, but I’m sure some hackers will get their hands on the PlayMore and get it emulating other systems which take advantage of these additional controls.

Not that you’re likely to use this thing as a media player, but the PlayMore also supports playback of a wide variety of audio and video file formats, and it even has a (craptastic – 0.3mp) camera built in. But you’re not buying this thing to take photos. You want to play some Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong Country, right? Well it should handle those just fine – assuming you know where to (ahem) get your hands on those game ROMs.

In terms of storage, the PlayMore has 4GB of on-board capacity, plus you can add up to 16GB with a microSD card. It’s also got an A/V out cable for hooking it up to a TV, and is charged via a standard mini-USB connector. And if you’re to believe the photo below, it’s even more fun when you’re drunk:

So now on to the best part. The PlayMore sells for just $57.88 (USD) over at ChinaVasion, so if you don’t already have a handheld retro emulator, this looks like one of the better deals out there. If you buy one, post a comment and let us know how it works for you!

I’ve run across plenty of those little plug-and-play retro gaming systems before, but this one wins the prize for being the smallest one I’ve seen yet. This pint-sized system is a fully self-contained SEGA Genesis emulator, capable of playing several Sonic the Hedgehog games.

AtGames’ (aka Sapphire) Arcade Nano Sonic system is small enough to hang on your keychain or backpack, but packs ten games under the hood. Five of the games are classic SEGA Genesis games including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast, and Alex Kidd. There are also five “bonus” games including Air Hockey, Naval Power, Cannon, Fight or Lose and Checker, all of which I’ve never heard of before, so I’m gonna guess they’re not all that. The tiny system has a built-in joystick and buttons, runs on a single AAA battery and connects to a composite video and mono audio jack on your TV.

If Sonic isn’t your thing, they’re also making Nano Columns and Nano Virtua Fighter 2 versions, each with their own collection of five classic and five bonus games. I’m not sure what games come with Columns, but the VF2 version packs in some good ones, including Shinobi 3, Golden Axe, Golden Axe 3, and Alien Storm.

If you have any doubts about these miniscule systems, here’s a video review of the Sonic one in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While it looks like the emulation isn’t 100% perfect, it still looks pretty playable to me, and these still look like a great gift for classic SEGA fanatics. All three Genesis Nano systems can be found over at Walmart for $19.96 each.

The new music video for the band Goldfish perfectly captures the spirit of classic 8-bit and 16-bit console and arcade games in a tidy little package. The music video for We Come Together makes reference to many classic games, as well as a few other pop culture icons, as well as some more recent memes like Keyboard Cat, with a little Kenny G thrown in for good measure.

The video was created by Mike Scott along with a 14 pixel artists from around the globe, as well as 3D voxel artists, chiptunes and a little bit of claymation thrown in for good measure. Watch the awesome video below, then see if you can name all the different gaming and geeky references in the clip. Bonus points for that voxelized Cactaur.

Right from the the SEGA-ized opening logo and sound, I knew this video would be great, and I’m just glad that the tune is just as great as the animation itself. I’ll be adding this track to iTunes tonight.

The first major purchase I made after college was a Neo Geo game console. The thing was about $500 when I bought it and I thought it was the best graphics that would ever be. Today my iPhone looks better, but I still remember that Neo Geo. Analogue Interactive is making the Neo Geo once again, this time swathed in wood.

The company has a cool console called the Neo Geo Consolized MVS that takes all the parts that make the Neo Geo and puts them into a beautifully made hardwood walnut box. The wooden case has dust flaps over the cartridge section and everything.

On the front are two joystick ports that work with any controllers for the Neo Geo. The back has stereo audio, composite, S-Video and Component and Pure RGB/SCART outputs so you can use it with yout HDTV. You can pre-order one of these awesome wooden consoles for $649 (USD) for shipment in May.

Can you believe that 12 months ago, if you had said the words “Angry Birds”, most people would have thought you were talking about an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Now, it’s the mobile gaming juggernaut of 2010. So what better way to pay tribute to those funny looking, grumpy avians than to demake them into 16-bit pixel art.

The guys over at Penney Design took care of the pixelated deconstruction of the birds, taking design cues from late ’80s/early ’90s games like Worms and Lemmings. Although the addition of the mouse pointer makes me think that this version of Angry Birds would have been running under DOS. I don’t think Windows 3.0 was up to the task, and my Sega Genesis and SNES certainly had no mice.

I love how they have those “Power” and “Wind” settings at the top of the screen. They even included one of the Angry Birds Seasons levels – which I’m currently waiting to unlock each and every night until December 25th.

This compact game console is a real freak of nature. Not only is it shaped like Sonic the Hedgehog’s spiky blue head, it plays some classic 16-bit SEGA Genesis games and comes with Wii-like motion controllers.

Despite the “110+” labeling, the system comes with a total of 40 games (the higher count includes all levels you can directly select). Included are 15 classic licensed games, 7 “interactive sports games”, and 18 “arcade games”. I found a full list of included titles here. The system ships with a pair of wireless controllers, which both appear to have a traditional D-pad (presumably for the classic Genesis titles), but also motion control (probably for the other titles).

Perhaps the most intriguing part of this oddity is the SD card slot which lets you “easily expand your gaming library beyond the games built-into the system.” So far, the only downloadable games I could find are these lame looking ones. I’m not sure if you could use the SD slot to load up your own ROM on the thing, but for just $35 bucks, it might be worth a shot.

In my experience, previous SEGA Genesis products from ATGames have had issues with wonky sound emulation, so you should consider that before plunking down your money. Others over on the SEGA-16 Forums have stronger opinions than mine – like this guy: “You can get more accurately emulated Genesis hardware by slotting an original cart between your ass cheeks, then sitting down quickly onto it and screaming ‘SEEEEEGGAAAA’”. Okay, so maybe you shouldn’t buy one.

If you still want one, you can get your hands on the ATGames 110 Games Motion Control Sonic System over at DDR Game.

Nathan Roberts recently completed this paint job for his son’s bedroom. He calls it the Retro Room Mural and like he supposes, we’re sure that it will appeal to geeks everywhere. Nathan says that he wanted to instill the geek in his son and I’m sure that it worked!

The process involved finding the right images, then compositing them on his computer. He found that 8-bit and 16-bit images worked best. Once he had the design, all he needed was an LCD projector. He projected the images onto the wall and then hand painted the mural. All in all, Nathan spent $30-50 and 15-20 hours on this project, and it looks pretty awesome.

Pixelation forum member junkboy has been making video game demake mock-ups for Swedish magazine Level for several years now. He recently shared some of his creations because he didn’t want them to “just gather dust” on his hard drive. Junkboy, you Swedish artist you, delicious pictures like these should indeed not be defiled by even a speck of digital dust. These are mouth-watering.

I love the Bayonetta demake. No, I love all of these. There’s just a charm to them, the bright colors and cute sprites are fun to look at. But it may also be because I grew up with these graphics.

But most of all, I’m just amazed at how junkboy was able to preserve the look of the games he de-made.

SEGA today announced Genesis Ultimate Collection for the iPhone. The new app will provide a gateway for you to buy and play your favorite Genesis games, fully emulated to run just like the originals.

The initial version of the app will come bundled with Space Harrier II, but then once you’re inside the collection, you’ll be able to add new games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force for starters. Prices for each game range from $2.99 to $5.99 (USD) for each game.

While the Genesis Ultimate Collection won’t hit the iPhone App Store until early February, you can already find several of these games individually on the App Store, but the Ultimate Collection will give you a neat and tidy way to keep them all in one place.

Of course, if you’re a real Genesis fan and you don’t mind another gadget in your backpack, you could always just pick up one of these instead. That’s how I roll.

Want to play all your favorite classic retro console games? Sure you could cheat and buy yourself a Dingoo, but what fun would that be? This custom-built portable uses hardware from a couple of other devices to create a system that plays games from the Nintendo NES, SNES and Sega Genesis.

Modder Trstn18 created his SNEGENES P handheld with the parts from an authentic “mini” SNES, and a Gen-X clone machine. The whole thing is set into a custom see-through case so you can see all the electronic goodness inside. While I wouldn’t necessarily call a system that’s 8.6-inches wide, 5.4-inches tall and 1-inch thick “handheld”, it’s still a pretty great mod job.

The SNEGENES P is powered by six 2600mAh batteries, which let it play for somewhere around 5 to 7 hours on a single charge. There’s also composite video and stereo audio outputs, which let Trstn play his favorite games on a TV. And yes, Virginia, it can play actual cartridges from these retro systems – unfortunately, the rear of the SNEGENES is a bit of a hot mess:

Here’s a brief video clip showing off the SNEGENES P in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Now why the video clip is backwards, I have no idea. Maybe it’s because “snegenes” sounds like a backwards chant you’d hear in a subliminal message on a Beatles record. Just hold your computer up to a mirror and you can watch it properly.

Nope, this portable gaming system is most definitely not a PSP Go. What you’re looking at here is a cheap Chinese handheld known as the PXP-2000.

While the PXP-2000 won’t play any of your PSP games, it will play classic games from the NES, Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super Famicom/SNES, and SEGA Megadrive/Genesis consoles. It features a nice oversize 4.3″ LCD screen and a slide-out controller just like the PSP Go that it mimics.

In addition to playing all of those retro 8-, 16- and 32-bit games from your childhood, the PXP-2000 is a media player that can crank out your music and videos too. It can play MP3, WMA, WAV, APE, FLAC, RM-Audio, AMR, AAC+ audio formats. For video, it can handle AVI videos, but comes with transcoding software for RM, RMVB, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPE, MP4, DAT, MOV, DAT, and even the elusive, but non-existent MP5 format (it’s really just Real Media Variable Bitrate format).

The PXP is your standard jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none media player, complete with an low resolution digital video camera, FM radio, a calculator, notepad, e-book reader and English-to-Chinese dictionary.

If you’re too cheap to drop $249 on a proper PSP Go, and you really just want to play retro games anyhow, head on over to Chinagrabber and plunk down your $83.99 (USD).

This odd little handheld gaming system may look a heckuva lot like a Nintendo Game Boy Advance, but it’s actually one of those multi-system emulators that can play games from a variety of retro consoles.

The mysteriously named SP2 handheld can play games from the original NES, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Color, Neo Geo and yes, the Game Boy Advance. Just load your favorite ROMs (no where ever would you have gotten those from?) onto a MicroSD card, stick ‘em into the slot, and you’re all set to play all your retro classics on the SP2′s 2.4-inch LCD screen. It also claims to come with “hundred games built in”, for what that’s worth.

As an added bonus, the SP2 can play music in MP3 or WMA formats, as well as videos in RM/RMV and AVI formats. There’s also a built in voice recorder and microphone (which I’d love to see hacked to control gameplay at some point). In addition to the silver version pictured above, it’s available in both black and gold case designs, in case you’re into that sort of thing.

Of course those of you with a keen powers of observation will notice this emulator’s relative dearth of buttons. While you should be fine playing all those NES and Game Boy games, you might have trouble with SNES and Neo Geo games because those consoles had 4 buttons on the face of their controllers. That said, there are a couple of hidden shoulder buttons, but I’m not sure that will help.

Still, if you want to give one a whirl, you can grab the SP2 over on DealExtreme for $65.90(USD) each. Me, I’ll stick to playing with my Dingoo.

There are plenty of cheap plug-and-play SEGA retro gaming systems out there, but this is the first one I’ve seen that lets you load up your own ROMs and play them on your TV.

The E-Time Game Play Controller ($22 USD) may look like a standalone game controller, but it’s actually a self-contained SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis console. Just load your SEGA MD ROMs onto an SD memory card, plug it into the slot on the controller, and you’ll be playing Sonic, Golden Axe and your other favorite 16-bit titles on your TV. The battery-operated controller even can save games in progress if the original title supports it. You can even plug in a second controller with a standard Mega Drive/Genesis connector.

Keep in mind that this is not an officially-licensed SEGA device – just another one of those cheap Chinese gadgets that might not live up to its promises, so don’t blame me if it doesn’t play all of your ROMs. And anyhow, what are you doing with those ROMs anyway? As long as it plays Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I’m fine.

TecToy’s upcoming revamped edition of the classic SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis system is getting a modern-day upgrade with the addition of a Guitar Hero-inspired controller and accompanying game.

The Mega Drive 4 Guitar Idol edition will include not only a Mega Drive/Genesis gaming system, and a pair of old-school controllers, but bundles a guitar that would make current-gen console players happy too.

The system comes pre-loaded with a whopping 87 classic SEGA 16-bit games, including titles such as Altered Beast, Rainbow Island, Golden Axe III, along with the brand-spanking-new Guitar Idol and 50 music tracks from a number of popular artists. Everyone from The Ramones to Panic at the Disco to Billy Squier is represented on the diverse the track list.

No word on if or when you’ll be able to grab this system outside of Brazil, but for now, you can find out more over on TecToy’s website.
