I can remember being freaked out by HAL 9000 when I was a kid. The thought of a computer that could think and try to kill you was pretty creepy. The main things I recall from the flick were that HAL said “Dave” a lot and had a glowing red eye that just glared at the screen when he spoke. ThinkGeek has just revealed HAL’s little sister called IRIS 9000.

The IRIS 9000 is a little iPhone speaker dock that you can plug the iPhone 4S into that will allow you to control the Siri voice assistant from across the room. The device has a small wireless remote control that you can use to activate the Siri system from across the room.

The dock has an integrated speaker and an integrated mic. The speaker amplifies the sound so you can hear it and the dock has an integrated mic for making voice calls. Unlike HAL’s monotonous eyeball, IRIS’ red light also flashes when Siri talks.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The device will ship in April 2012 for $59.99 (USD), and you can get on ThinkGeek’s email notification list here.

Designer Neil Poulton got the inspiration for the domed glowing light on the outside of his latest hard drive design from the red light on the face of HAL 9000, the infamous computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The new LaCie 5big Network storage array is designed for small and medium workgroups looking for a ton of storage at a reasonable price. Heck, I bet it has WAY more memory than HAL 9000 had. The 5big sports five hot-swappable Serial ATA drive bays which can accomodate as much as 7.5 terabytes of disk.

The drives can be configured in a number of array modes, including RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 6, RAID 10 and RAID 0. The 5big can be attached to your network via a zippy Gigabit Ethernet port, and additional external drives can be connected via USB 2.0 or SATA ports.

The array also offers built-in Active Directory support, so you can easily add it as a Windows file server for your office. And if you’re not a Windows fan It’ll work with Mac and Linux systems too.

The 5big comes in three sizes: 2.5TB ($899), 5.0TB ($1399), and 7.5TB ($1899), and can be found over on the LaCie website.

When I think of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it usually conjures up imagery of HAL 9000′s glowing red light, the strains of Also Sprach Zarathrustra, and dead astronauts launched silently into space.

But the guys over at Studio Electronics used the film as inspiration for the design of their new Omega Orion synthesizer. From its sleek white and black case design, to the ethereal blue glow of its LED lighting, this 38 pound behemoth of an analog synth is truly a stunner.

Designed by Tim Caswell and Antoine Argentieres, the synth is actually based on the not particularly good (OK, just plain ugly) looking Omega 8, an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer – wrapped up in a retro-future package. No pricing or release date has been announced, but with the Omega 8 retailing for around $4,600 (USD), expect the Orion to set you back at least a couple of mortgage payments.

Remember the ape/monolith scene from Kubrick’s classic 2001:A Space Odyssey? Apparently these apes didn’t get the memo that it wasn’t an Odyssey [console] at all, but actually an Atari 2600.

This imaginative t-shirt by Akron, Ohio illustrator psychoreindeer reimagines that fateful monkey moment with a gigantic Atari joystick in place of the big black slab. According to reindeer, in addition to the schmancy silkscreened artwork, the t-shirt “comes with two sleeves and a even a hole to stick your head through”. Bonus!

While the apes in the film might not have understood the meaning of the monolith (not to mention most of us who sat through the nearly 3-hour long movie either), the primates on this t-shirt probably spent the rest of the day debating between a round of Pitfall or River Raid once they found the joystick.

I guess we now know why apes have opposable thumbs.

Inspired by the demented HAL9000 computer from the classic science fiction flick, 2001: A Space Odyssey, it shows the inimitable RRoD symbol along with the saying “I’m afraid I can’t let you play that, Dave.” The shirt’s designer clearly had just about enough with his 360s crapping out on him, so had to immortalize his frustrations with this clever t-shirt.

So if you’ve had an 360 (or two or three) die on you, you’ve got to pick one up from SplitReason for $17.95.
