Atari fans rejoice! The Atari.com website has just gotten a facelift, and one of the great new features of the site is an arcade with a number of classic Atari game for you to play in your web browser.

So far, the Atari Arcade includes web-playable Flash versions of four arcade classics: Asteroids, Battlezone, Crystal Castles, and Lunar Lander. Hopefully, they’ll add more games in the not-too-distant future. I want my Dig-Dug and Paperboy! They’ve also thrown in versions of a couple of classic 2600 games, Yar’s Revenge and Adventure. Each of the games is a faithful recreation of the original, with the addition of a global high score leaderboard.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the new Atari Arcade, and play without fear of ever running out of quarters again.

Really, how can you not love a game with instructions that read: “The primary objective of the game is to break a path through the shield, and destroy the Qotile with a blast from the Zorlon Cannon”?

Sure, you could go install a copy of Stella if you want to play Pitfall on your computer (or any other Atari 2600 game for that matter), but this handy carrying case lets you get up and running without installing any of that pesky software.

Philly textile artist NovellaMarie’s Pitfall laptop case is covered with an intricate needlepoint scene of Activision’s classic platformer.

Oddly enough, the featured scene comes from the Apple IIC version of the game, not the Atari 2600, but I won’t tell if you won’t.

Each handmade bag comes with a sturdy adjustable red shoulder strap, and offers a padded polka-dotted lining to protect your precious laptop (13-inch or smaller models only). You can find the Pitfall laptop bag over on Etsy for $150 USD.

What better way to break up the monotony of trolling the aisles of the grocery store than with a little video game action? The guys at this funky Milwaukee, Wisconsin grocery store are happy to oblige with an in-store Atari 2600 lounge.

The display includes a fully-functional Atari 2600, along with a wide assortment of about 50 classic games to keep your mind sharp in between the Cap ‘N Crunch and the Mrs. Paul’s Frozen Fish. I especially dig the retro wallpaper and crappy old color TV which complete the kitschy rec room motif.

Koppa’s Farwell Foods is a great example of why we need little neighborhood grocery stores (I’ve heard their Fulbeli Deli makes a mean sandwich too). If you happen to be in the Milwaukee area, check them out at 1940 N.

Not to be outdone by the edible Atari 2600 joystick, the pastry artisans from Los Angeles’ Cakes by the Pound went all out when they created this delectable Atari-inspired masterpiece.

An awesome work of baked goodness, everything you see in the picture is edible other than the board that the cake sits on. I can’t get over the details on this cake. From the perfectly black and red joysticks, to the woodgrain icing on the console and the tiny Atari logo, it’s just mind-boggling.

From the looks of it, pastry chef Mendy Pound can bake cakes in just about any design you can imagine, so if you want a tasty PS3, Wii, N64, Sega Genesis, or even a Fairchild Channel F, I’m pretty sure her bakery can handle your request.

I’m guessing that the only game this 2600 could actually play would be Cakewalk.

Ever wonder what a Mario game would have looked like if it came out on the Atari 2600 instead of the NES? The guys over at Geekstir dug up this great clip which shows off what that serious visual downgrade would have done for the game.

Imagine a world where you can barely make out the difference between the blocky little plumber and his squared off foes. Beavertron Entertainment’s re-imagining of the classic Super Mario Brothers does a pretty good simulating what the 2600 version might have looked like.

While it’s not perfectly accurate (there’s no way the 2600 could have produced those original NES sounds or the relatively crisp text at the top of the screen), but it’s still fun to watch.

Next up, Bioshock on the VIC-20.

While I normally wouldn’t eat a cake with black icing on it, this one looks too good to pass up. Flickr contributor Fredrick Johnson says the fabulous retro Atari joystick cake was made by his pastry chef friend, Lisa. After you chow down on this sugary delight, you might need to play a round or two of VCS (not so) classic Tooth Protectors to prevent cavities.

Who needs an LCD headrest screen and an Xbox 360 for each passenger in their car anyway? Here’s the proper way to outfit your ride with gaming tech.

This 1979 Buick Riviera has all the style and class you’d expect from a pimped out vehicle. But the real icing on the cake is the embedded Atari 2600. The car’s owner, Kevin, even went so far as to cram a 13-inch woodgrain television under the dashboard, which perfectly compliments the late 70s motif. (If you look carefully – there’s another nice retro touch – an 8-track player behind the steering wheel.)

Now you can play classics like Tooth Protectors and Kool-Aid Man at the same time as crashing into the car in front of you. The bonus: no pesky air bags! Sweet!

The world’s most prolific console modder, Ben Heck, has a new trick up his sleeve. This time, he’s partnered up with a company called Gameport to design a portable emulation console for mass-production.

Currently in the prototype stages, the pocket-sized Gameport will be capable of emulating multiple classic 8-bit systems, currently the Atari 2600 and Colecovision, with additional systems to come in future. You’ll be able to connect the Gameport to your computer via a USB port, and transfer game ROMs to the device’s SD memory slot. The system will even be able to output to a television, thanks to built-in A/V outputs. The current build measures 3.5″ x 5″ x 1″, but Ben thinks the final version will be a little less chunky.

Gameport hasn’t yet announced any retail outlets, a launch date or price, but I’ll let you know if and when that changes.

The game was built by programmer Scott Pehnke entirely in Flash, and features a full emulation of the game including all of the sights and sounds of the original. It even features one of the first ever video game easter eggs.

If the Atari 2600 is a little too primitive for you, here are a couple of other web based classic game emulations you can check out: Link 1 Link 2

Our favorite modder of all things video game has to be Ben Heckendorn (aka “Ben Heck”.) He’s brought us portable Xbox 360s, Atari 800s and the original portable version of the Atari 2600 VCS.

Ben’s latest endeavor was to take his original Atari VCSp (his first portable 2600,) and update it into a cleaner more modern design. Inspired by the Nintendo DS Lite, the new VCSp Revision 7 is a true thing of beauty. It features a fully-functional Atari 2600 system and a 3.5″ color LCD screen, all running on 4 rechargeable AA batteries.

If you haven’t visited Ben’s website before, it’s well worth a look. The man is a genius.

Certainly they’re a bit cumbersome as keychains, but you cannot deny the cool factor here.

I’ve seen differing information on which versions feature which games, but from what I can decipher, there are three versions, one with Asteroids and Millipede (joystick); and one with Yar’s Revenge and Centipede (joystick) and one with Breakout, Pong and Warlords (paddle).

Each controller runs on 3 AAA batteries and comes with a 6 foot RCA cable to connect to the composite video input on your TV or monitor. They’re available now for just $15 USD each from Fredflare.com.

P.S.: This post on AtariAge complains about the build quality and lack of authenticity of the games, but I still think it’s a cool idea.
