Made famous by its deadliness, the Ebola virus was first described in 1976. It was made famous by The Hot Zone by Richard Preston and some small epidemics that thankfully didn’t kill off most of the planet. While it never reached the epidemic levels feared, it’s still interesting to check out the intricacies of this 3D model of the deadly virus.

This intricate 3D model was done by Visual Science and it’s based on X-ray analysis and data that was published in the last twenty years. Some of the protein structures were predicted using computer modeling techniques.

This new model is 10 times more complex than the last one they did of HIV, which is kind of astounding. Where can I print mine?

People have always had a fascination with the extraordinary: unicorns, fairy tales, dwarves, princesses, and magic mirrors. And somehow, the latter is slowly becoming a reality, although they’re not really magical in that sense.

We’ve already seen what augmented reality mirrors can do to our faces, and while they can be used to correct or modify certain features, they can’t change our faces completely.

However, artist Karolina Sobecka wants to change that, and change it she has. Sobecka has come up with a new 3D visualization tool that replaces your face with a three dimensional image of an animal. What the mirror does is show a reflection of the person in front of it complete with real-time expressions and movements, albeit with an animal for a face.

She calls her project “All the Universe is Full of the Lives of Perfect Creatures,” which is pretty appropriate, if you think about it. Sobecka programmed her mirror by using FaceTracker, Unity3d, openFrameworks, Blender3d, and ofxFaceTracker.

MGS fans will want to check out the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Premium Package, exclusively available for the Japanese market. In this set you get a special 3DS system, a copy of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, and a pair of double-sided MGS art pieces.

The 3Ds system is a special “Snake Camouflage” 3DS that of course looks like black snake skin. Sadly for those of us in the U.S., this is a Japanese exclusive, only available at Konami Style (JP), the company’s online shop, for ¥22,980 (appx. $298 USD.)

If you live in Japan you can pre-order before February 3, but it is so limited that you will only be able to buy one if you enter a raffle. The winners will get an e-mail from Konami by February 10, with the package itself coming on March 8 if you win.

I’ve mentioned some of the multitouch displays from ideum in the past, but this one is one of the biggest off-the-shelf touchscreen interfaces I’ve seen to date. The just announced MT65 Presenter has a whopping 65-inch screen. This makes it about 2.5 times the size of the Microsoft Surface 2.0.

It’s able to detect up to 32 simultaneous touch points, so multiple users can interact with it, and it offers full 1080p HD resolution. The giant LED backlit LCD screen is fully 3D capable, and is bright enough to work even in well-lit environments, like museums, offices and classrooms.

The MT65 Presenter isn’t just a display – it’s a fully self-contained Windows 7-based system (a Linux version is coming in March.) Under the hood, it’s got a speedy quad-core Intel Core i7 2720QM CPU, along with 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SATA SSD hard drive, and a GeForce GTX 460 GPU, so it’s powerful enough to run just about anything you can throw at it. Ports include Ethernet, HDMI (in and out for mirroring), USB 2.0, and 3.5mm audio in and out jacks.

The whole system is loaded into a durable 4″ thick vandal-proof aluminum frame, so it can be used in public places without too much worry. They’ve also attached a small HD webcam and stereo microphone on top of the display, so those can be used as inputs for interactive projects. Also included is GestureWorks 3, which lets you easily create interactive touch-based apps using Adobe Flash, Flex or Air. The package also includes software components for quickly integrating and interacting with photos, videos, and audio files in touch-based projects.

The ideum MT65 Presenter is available now, with prices starting at $17,450 (USD), and can be ordered in custom colors for $1,000 more. Sure, you might not be able to afford one for your living room, but it’s a pretty good deal for professional users, given its size and capabilities.

If you like the idea of having a 3D smartphone to check out videos and games, but the thought of being without your iPhone makes you scared your day is coming – maybe. A new patent app filed by Apple has surfaced that outlines a way that they could get a 3D image and interface on a gadget like the iPhone. The special screen would show each eye a slightly different image, much like the Nintendo 3DS.

The cool part is that the 3D interface would look sort of like a room and you would be able to turn the iPhone or iPad with one hand to access what is on that wall. The idea is that the one-handed adjustment method will let you do other things with one hand and like cook or drive and still navigate the interface.

The idea is that the compass and other motion sensors inside the smartphone would know which way the device is turned and would change what you see on the screen accordingly. That sounds pretty cool; it would make changing apps a snap. The patent app also talked about performing certain motions like shaking the phone to go directly to an app. Given that Apple has thus far eschewed the 3D trend, it’ll be interesting to see if this ever comes to market, or if it’s just a patent for patent’s sake.

It was basically a first-person adventure in a huge and beautiful world that was all yours to explore. Well, get ready to do it again, this time on the Nintendo 3DS.

A short while back, Sony released their take on the wearable 3D display, with their futuristic HMZ-T1 3D Goggles. Now, Epson has jumped onto the 3D head-mounted display bandwagon with their decidedly more subtle Moverio BT-100 goggles [JP].

Not that wearing something that looks like those sunglasses they give you after they dilate your pupils is really that subtle, I suppose.

Still, if you’re looking for an intimate way to experience 3D content, you might want to check these out. The Moverio BT-100 comes with a pair of 0.52″ LCD displays, each with a resolution of 960×540. Combined, they produce a cinematic 3D effect equivalent to watching a flick on a massive 320-inch diagonal screen.

The displays are operated by a compact Android 2.2-based control box, which can read content from an SDHC card in a variety of video formats, and also support Dolby Mobile audio. It also offers the ability to stream content from the web or even NetFlix (though they don’t support 3D content at this point.) One thing you should note: in reading over the specs, it doesn’t look like these have an HDMI input, so you won’t be able to connect your PS3, Xbox 360 or Blu-ray player as a content source. You’re stuck with the included media player.

One unique thing about the Moverio glasses is that they’re transparent – letting you see your surroundings when you need to take a break from fake 3D objects constantly being whipped at your head.

So far, the BT-100 3D glasses are only sold in Japan, but the guys over at Gizmine are now importing them for the low, low price of $949.99 (USD). With Sony’s higher resolution 3D goggles now available here in the States for $800(USD), it’s a tall order to envision running out and buying these, but if you’re looking for something more portable and less conspicuous, you might want to check them out.

I remember the old View-Master viewer and reels from when I was a kid. Most people have probably used a View-Master 3D viewer at some point in their childhood. The images were fun. But what if you want to make your own custom picture reels?

What may have seemed impossible years ago, is now easy. Just head over to Image3D and you can create your own View-Master photo reels. Just create an account, upload some pictures, and place your order. You can even add text and do some basic image manipulation.

If you want 3D images, those can be ordered up too, as long as the pictures you took were in 3D and you use their “stereo” website to order, otherwise, you’re missing out on the best part. A custom reel will cost you $22 (USD), with additional copies costing less. You can also buy a bundle, which gets you a View-Master and a gift box for $25. It makes an awesome gift for any occasion.

The world has gone 3D crazy these days, it seems. I am all for some sweet 3D content at the movie theater or with some shows on TV. I am not all for 3D everything though. For instance, I really don’t want the pics I take all the time in 3D so there is no real benefit to me getting one of those 3D phones that shoot 3D pics.

However, a new app has surfaced for the iPhone that is interesting to me. The app is called Snapily 3D and it allows you to shoot 3D pics on your iPhone easily. However, you need to wear colored glasses to view the photos you snap (unless you want to try the crazy glasses-free “cross-eyed” mode.)

According to reviews, the app takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, the 3D effects are fantastic. It can snap pics in either color or greyscale, and you can even print your 3D images. One catch is that 3D glasses naturally aren’t included with a digital purchase. You will have to find your own stereoscopic glasses and tell the app what sort you have. It appears that the app takes multiple photos for precise distances and overlays them for the effect.

The Snapily 3D app is on the App Store to purchase right now for $1.99 (USD)

What do you get when you combine fishing line with buttons? Sculptures! That’s what Miami-based artist Augusto Esquivel is doing. He basically arranges different lengths of fishing line in a grid, then carefully strings-in sewing buttons in a variety of different colors to create shapes.

It’s definitely a unique way of creating art. Augusto has created a bunch of different 3D forms, from pianos to flowers. He even made a toilet out of buttons, though you would want to try and use it.

Augusto has been referred to as “The Button Guy”. He says that he doesn’t count the number of buttons that go into each piece, but my guess is that he uses quite a lot of them.

His sculptures make me wonder if he was inspired by the code of The Matrix, since the fishing lines kind of remind me of the code as it rains vertically down the screen.

It’s been quite a wait and last month we had word that the new 3DS firmware would be delayed until December 8th, which is tomorrow. But now Nintendo has finally unveiled the version 3.0.0 system update a day early for eager 3DS owners. So what does this update bring with it?

Well, you get 3D video recording and DLC features as well as StreetPass improvements, support for the 3DS-to-3DS transfer service and more. There’s even a new Nintendo Zone to interact with when connected to certain Wi-Fi hotspots. It’s worth booting up your console and updating to check it all out.

The update is free of charge and easy to install directly on your 3DS handheld.

For those of us who purchased TVs without 3D capabilities, there’s pretty much not been a way to watch 3D content on these sets without buying a whole new set. This $60 gadget aims to change that, if not is a somewhat unusual way.

TVs require not just a higher scan rate to display content in 3D, but special built-in hardware to decode and handle 3D signals. However, Marvel Digital’s 3D converter box lets users of non-3D televisions watch content in 3D using old-school anaglyphic 3D technology. Instead of red and blue glasses, Marvel uses amber and blue glasses to view 3D content.

Now before you get all excited about watching that Avatar 3D Blu-ray disc on your older TV, it looks like this box can either produce simulated 3D visuals – from 2D sources, as well as display any content that’s in 3D “side-by-side” format. I’m pretty sure Blu-ray discs are encoded in sequential format, so those probably won’t work, but I suppose you could give it a whirl if your disc player supports 3D. On the plus side, DirecTV and XBox 360′s standard 3D format is “side-by-side,” so you should be able to watch this content in 3D.

In addition to supporting analglyphic 3D, the box will also work with proper 3D TVs (and passive or active shutter lenses) to simulate 3D from 2D content, but many sets already offer this capability. To use the 3D converter box, simply place it inline with your HDMI connected device, and it should take care of the rest for you. It offers full support for HDMI 1.1 through 1.4 specs, and can pass-through 1080p HD video. Keep in mind that “side-by-side” 3D cuts resolution in half, though.

I’m tempted to order one of these just to see how well it works, since my TV doesn’t support 3D. Priced at just 60 bucks, it’s not much of a risk. If you’re interested in giving it a whirl for yourself, you can order the 3D converter box from Marvel Digital.

Developed by Japan’s Burton, Inc., and based on technologies from AIST and Keio University, this 3D display can display images not just in the air, but underwater too. The system uses “by focusing laser light to produce plasma excitation from the oxygen and nitrogen in the air.” It’s capable of producing about 50,000 dots per second at a frame rate of somewhere around 10-15 fps. While their demonstration uses simple geometric shapes and words, I think they should replace the image with Princess Leia.
How about a robot that can change faces whenever it wants? I’m talking creepy 3D faces that make them look human. It has arrived.

Created by Dr. Takaaki Kuratate, Mask-Bot has a lifelike human face, though it looks like a video game character. It could have many that it simply puts on. The face is created using 3-D images projected onto a plastic form.

The “talking mask animation engine” conveys emotion just like humans do. It will blink and even raise it’s virtual eyebrows. Obviously this could be big for video conferencing, but it has many other applications as well.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

How about putting a face you know on a cold sex bot? Maybe it could be used as a virtual spy, fooling people into giving up any info you are looking for. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

The seismogram charts the nine minutes of the earthquake, with its varying intensities.
The sculpture measures 12 inches in length and 8 inches in width. The 3D printing was done using rapid prototyping technology from a 3D image, obtained by rotating the graph. This isn’t Jerram’s first disaster sculpture. He’s also done one on the Hiroshima atomic bomb explosion. Next month, he plans on creating a glass version of this sculpture since he’ll be the artist in residence as the Washington Museum of Glass.

Panasonic just announced the new Lumix DMC-3D1, a dual-lens camera which can take high-resolution 3D images or simultaneously record stills and video footage.

The 3D1 has a 12MP sensor, and can record 3D images up to 8MP. It can also record 2D or 3D HD video at 1920×1080 resolution. The camera has got two ultra wide-angle lenses which capture images independently. This means that a scene can be captured with different zoom levels at the same time. All of the features are controlled via the 3.5-inch touchscreen.

There’s built-in noise reduction, and burst shooting up to 8fps. It comes with the usual features you’d expect from a higher end point-and-shoot camera, including an intelligent hand-held night shooting mode, which layers multiple exposures of a scene, as well as an improved noise reduction system for low-light shots. Sounds like you’ll be able to capture HDR photos as well.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Lumix DMC-3D1 should be released by the end of the year and sells for $500 (USD).

This may just look like your average cheap plastic iPhone 4 case, but under its Good and Plenty pink and black color scheme, this inexpensive add-on actually turns your iPhone 4 into a glasses-free 3D display.

Presumably, there’s some sort of lenticular lens sheet built into the case, which angles half of the image to your left eye and the other half to your right. Then, you’ll need to load up special 3D files which have been split into alternating bands in order to view content in 3D. According to the product descriptiom, it does ship with a set of example 3D files for you to play with, and I imagine there’s information on how to create or source additional 3D files.

Now I’m not going to say that you’ll be watching Avatar in full glasses-free 3D on your iPhone anytime soon, but it is possible that you could hack that together somehow. Given the fact that this case is only $23 (USD) over at DealExtreme, it might be worth a shot if you’re into 3D content. I only wish the damned thing came in other colors besides pink and black.

If any of you guys decides to pick one up, post a comment below and let us know how well it works.

We all know how cumbersome 3D glasses can be, and the holy grail of 3D is glasses-free tech. But that didn’t stop one guy from going completely the opposite direction. This 3D digital viewer not only requires that you look through lenspieces, but that you stoop over a wooden box to watch content.

Will Rockwell’s Digital Stereoscope uses the same optical principals of old 19th century stereoscopes, but uses a pair of bright digital displays in place of photographic placards. The wood and brass box comes preloaded with a library of 100 Victorian era stereoscopic images, and Will says that the image quality will transport you back to that simpler time.

The device only comes with still images, and Will says you can upload your own pictures too. However, I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t figure out a way to play 3D video on it if you wanted to, since the underlying technology should be able to handle it. It’s just a matter of splitting video images into left- and right-eye versions.

If you’re interested in The Digital Stereoscope, this unique device is available over on Etsy for $1200 (USD) – about the same price as a modern 3D HDTV.

I remember this fight I had with my sister when we were much younger. It was around Halloween, and we were fighting over who would get to wear the princess costume my mom had rented earlier. It was pretty close to the October 31st, so she only managed to bring one home. At the height of the fight, I remember yelling out at my sister: “You should probably go as yourself – a spoiled brat!”

And to help take those sentiments further – and in the literal sense – there’s the 3DPF Masks by REAL-f. These are custom-made and extremely realistic masks that could pass off as an authentic replica to your face. 3DPF stands for 3 Dimension Photo Forms, and they’re available as a mask or as a full bust of your head.

These masks are made by taking photos of your face from various angles and molding a three-dimensional copy from vinyl chloride resin. The method is so detailed, that even blood vessels and iris details are copied accurately onto the mask.

These masks or busts don’t come cheap either. The first mask will cost you a whopping $3,920 (USD), with each additional one priced at $780. Going for a bust will set you back $5,875, with each additional one priced at $1,960.

LG unveiled the really slick Optimus 3D smartphone a while back. The smartphone needs no glasses to view 3D images and video. LG announced a few months back that it was working on a new converter that would turn a user’s 2D games into 3D on the fly for the phone. LG has now announced that game converter is available.

The converter is simply called the “3D Game Converter,” and it will work with any OpenGL-based game that plays in landscape mode. Other games will not work. It can convert the 2D images to 3D and can be turned off at any time. The new game converter is being offered in Europe to start with this month as part of a maintenance release.

The converter will be offered in other regions in the coming weeks says LG. That should mean the US gets the converter before too long. I wonder how well this works for making 2D games 3D.
