GM is looking at transparent displays for the windows of your car and Samsung is using them to make the coolest and most interactive liquor cooler on the planet (among other things.) Samsung has announced a 46-inch LCD which shows images just like a regular LCD display, except that you can see through it.

Samsung has teamed up with Absolut Vodka to show off the screen on a commercial cooler for its liquor. The screen is the front of the glass cabinet door. The buyers can see advertisements on the door of the cooler and still look inside to see if the cooler is stocked.

The 46-inch LCD screen has a contrast ratio of 4500:1 and a resolution of 1366 x 768 allowing it to show (720p) HD content. The downside is that the see-through design makes the display have worse than normal color reproduction with a 70% color gamut. Still, it’s pretty cool.

Samsung showed off a similar transparent display demo at last week’s CES, which was used to create what they called a “Smart Window.” What other cool uses do you see for a clear display like this?

For just $1299, you’ll get a good deal on the 46-inch Sony Bravia KDL-46S4100, plus you’ll get the 19-inch Bravia KDL-19M4000/S thrown in (via a $499 instant savings on the bundle). The KDL-46S4100 is a highly rated flat screen LCD with full 1080p resolution, while the 19-inch silver-bezeled LCD TV normally retails for $499, and displays 720p images (upscaled onto a 1440 x 900 display). The KDL-19M4000/S isn’t too shabby if you’re looking for an extra set for your office, kitchen or a bedroom and is a great bonus if you were already in the market for a large LCD for your living room.

If you want to get in on this deal, you’d better bust a move over to Dell before the offer expires tomorrow.

While Sceptre isn’t necessarily as well known as brands like Sony and Samsung, they do actually make pretty decent HDTVs. That said, if you’re looking for an bargain-priced way to break into the high-def big screen world, check out this limited time deal from Costco.

The Sceptre 46-inch 1080p widescreen LCD set is now on sale for just $1299.99 (after a $300 rebate.) The set offers full 1920 x 1080 native pixel resolution and supports true 1080p input signals. Contrast ratio is a solid 8,000 to 1, which is pretty good as LCDs go.

I also like that they didn’t skimp on inputs, even though the price is low. Sceptre includes 3 HDMI ports, as well as 2 Component and 2 Composite/S-video inputs too. There’s also a VGA input for hooking up a PC. The set also offers four built-in speakers, and SRS TruSurround XT audio enhancement.

This special offer is only valid through August 12, 2007, so if you’re interested in taking advantage of it, hop on over to the Costco website now.

Sony’s Spring/Summer 2007 product slate was officially announced today, and includes the release of a number of new displays in their popular BRAVIA series. Of particular note are two new ultra-slim rear projector models featuring full 1080p resolution.

The new LCD rear projection micro-displays are the 46-inch KDF-46E3000 and 50-inch KDF-50E3000. They feature a svelte new profile, measuring in at just 12.6 inches deep for the 50-inch model, and 11.9 inches deep for the 46-inch model. Similarly sized LCD and plasma flat-panel displays are around 5 to 6 inches deep without a stand, and around 11 to 13 inches deep with a stand, so these sets take up just about the same amount of space as flat panels if you’re not planning on hanging your display on a wall.

The displays both feature full 1920 x 1080 resolution with full 1080p inputs via HDMI. They support both 1080/60p and 24p frame rates for optimal playback of both high definition broadcasts and film content. The sets also include Sony’s advanced iris control for optimal contrast performance. Both models are compatible with Sony’s new $300 BRAVIA Internet Video Link module, which provides access to IP-based programming via an Ethernet connection.

Both sets are expected to be released this July. Pricing should be available a little closer to the release date.

Sony has begun shipping their new 46-inch BRAVIA XBR LCD Flat Panel HDTV.

The Sony KDL-46XBR3 features all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a top-notch display. The panel features full 1080p (1920×1080) native resolution and three 1080p HDMI inputs (two on the back, one on the front). The set is also equipped with a wide variety of analog connections including one S-Video, three Composite, two Component and one VGA inputs. Also on-board is an ATSC tuner for receiving over-the-air HDTV signals. However, there are no cablecard slots, which is a bit of a bummer.

The set offers Sony’s advanced “Digital Reality Creation” v2.5 video system, which improves sharpness and dimensionality, while limiting nasty artifacts like edge enhancement. Full-black to full-white contrast ratio measures admirable 7000 to 1 and Sony says you can expect a “real world” number of 1300 to 1. Backlighting is provided by a wide color gamut cold cathode fluorescent lamp, said to provide a wider than normal color range.

List price is $4599.99 and the set is available now from SonyStyle, but can be found through other retailers for about $500 less. The set’s 52-inch (KDL-52XBR2 and KDL-52XBR3) brethren should also be available in November for about $2000 to $2500 more.
