Jvc 1080p LCD 688 and 788 Series Tvs Announced

JVC took the wraps off of its latest series of widescreen LCD televisions today. The new sets range in size from 37 inches to 47 inches, and from $1600 to $2700.

First off, there’s the 688 series, consisting of a 37-inch model (LT-37X688) and a 42-incher (LT-42X688.) The 788 series come in 42-inch (LT-42X788) and 47-inch (LT-47X788) variants. The 688 series each feature a minimal black cabinet, while the 788 series have a an ultra thin bezel with silver trim. The 788 models also offer higher contrast ratio, faster response time and wider viewing angle than the 688s.

All of the sets offer a native 1080p (1920×1080) pixel resolution, and feature an upgraded scaling for optimal upconversion of lower resolution content. The sets all feature JVC’s Genessa image processing chip which offers features such as video noise reduction and “mosquito” noise reduction for dealing with highly-compressed signals better.

In addition to the typical inputs (HDMI, Component, Composite and S-video), the sets feature the ability to connect any USB storage device and view images directly on screen. They also feature “Advanced Hyper Surround” for basic virtual surround sound if you don’t want to add separate sound system.

Another improvement in this new series of sets is that JVC has drastically redesigned their (previously quirky) remote controls. The remotes now provide direct access to video inputs, illuminated buttons and improved infrared transmitters.

47-Inch LG LCD Set to Get Mega Contrast Ratio

LCD sets just keep getting better and better these days. LG upped the ante today by showing off a new 47-inch screen loaded with features that could put LCD ahead of plasma in picture quality once and for all.

The new display features LED backlighting with what’s being called “local dimming”. This allows the display to dynamically adjust the brightness of the LED backlights in sections, to produce much higher than normal contrast ratios. According to LG, the contrast ratio could be as high as 1,000,000 to 1. The set also features full 1080p native resolution and a super-wide color gamut of 105%.

While the display is still a prototype, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of these features in retail sets within the next 12 to 18 months.

Vizio 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Sets Under $2k

One of the best deals going in flat panel televisions has been from Vizio. Last year, I picked up one of their 50-inch plasma sets (1366×768 resolution) at Costco for around two grand, and have been duly impressed by the price-to-performance value on these sets.

Now, Vizio has let it slip that they will be releasing the GV47L (aka GV47FHDTV), a 47-inch LCD set running at a full 1080p native resolution for $1999. That price for any 47-inch LCD is quite good, but for true 1920×1080 clarity, it’s exceptional. (The current 46″ Vizio GV46L 720p model pictured above runs just $1699.99).

The company is targeting a release date prior to the Superbowl, so you might want to hold off on your big screen purchases until these hit the shelves. The sets should show up in the typical Vizio retailers such as Sam’s Club and Costco in the next few weeks.
