I never thought about reusing a spent airbag for much of anything, but it does make sense to upcycle this kind of durable material if you can. Toronto-based Mariclaro makes them all into backpacks and carryalls that are quite different from others that I’ve seen.

Mariclaro also salvages truck tarps, seat belts, bicycle inner tubes, and boat sails to created their laptop sleeves, messenger bags, briefcases and bags. 99% of each bag comes from upcycled materials. The remaining 1% is the thread and logo.

Some of their stuff is pretty cool, including the laptop sleeves made from bicycle inner tubes. Some of the bags are even waterproof as a bonus.

Prices start at around $29(USD) for an iPhone sleeve and go up to $299 for the Airbag Back Pack.

I sported a boy-cut until just before I became a teenager. That’s over a decade of bad hair cuts and hair that was so short that sometimes, strangers mistook me for a boy. I had always wanted to grow out my hair but my mom would insist that I keep it short because I was the messy kind of kid who never made any effort when it came to grooming. Thankfully, those days are over (and I’ve finally gotten my mother off my case when it comes to my hair. My hair.)

And I know I may not be a kid anymore, but all I know is, I probably would’ve wanted a couple of these 8-Bit Hair Bows to keep my mane in place.

They’re delightfully geeky and will appeal to a lot of girls (and maybe even some guys?). They’re not just for gamers, either, because the red and black pixelated look actually makes for a pretty stylish design.

The 8-Bit Hair Bows are available for purchase from ThinkGeek for $6.99(USD) a piece.

Remember that rather obese gaming accessory for the Nintendo 3DS called the Circle Pad? Well, folks in Japan have been enjoying it. We assume they has been enjoyment, but whether they are liking it or not, they can buy one.

Soon the accessory will arrive to the masses in the United States, where it should feel right at home with its enormous girth. It will arrive on our shores early next year, completely missing the holiday shopping season. And don’t worry, it won’t take that extra time to slim down either. You’ll still be getting an awkwardly largish piece of gear.

While we don’t have an exact date, word is that it will be released in time for you to use it with Resident Evil: Revelations, which arrives a week before Valentine’s Day. Are you planning on buying one for your special guy or gal?

Have you ever wanted to use your iPad as a musical instrument? I know that Jamie Lidell can compose music with his iPhone, but transforming your iPad into a guitar seems like something even cooler. If you want to do this, you’ll need something like the iTar fretboard attachment.

The iTar case and fretboard will dock with your iPad, turning your iPad into a full-fledged guitar in seconds. Couple that with the iPad’s touchscreen interface, and you can play samples, drum it like a beat box, or play it like a synthesizer (or pick up a game of Angry Birds) in-between guitar riffs.

The iTar is the brainchild of inventor Harvey Starr, who has plenty of experience building expensive, custom MIDI-controller. Now Harvey’s company, Starr Labs, has got a Kickstarter project to produce the iTar. They’re still a way off from their $50,000 goal, but assuming the project does get there, it will be pretty cool to see this attachment produced.

You can get in on the iTar project over at Kickstarter now. A $200 pledge will get you your very own iTar (assuming the project hits its goal.)

What’s a Jedi or Sith to do the next time they get invited to a formal dinner party, like the one that Lando Calrissian threw on Bespin? Well if you want to look good for the Dark Lord, you’ll need to look stylish and make sure your tie stays put, right?

Thanks to the fine folks at Japan’s Kotobukiya, that’s now a possibility, as they’ve just released these awesome lightsaber tie tacks. They’re based on either Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker’s saber handles, and are nicely detailed and cast in plated brass.

At this point, they’re only available in Japan, but I did find both the Vader and Skywalker variants over on Amazon Japan for ￥3,455 each (~$40 USD) if you want to give them a whirl – I’m just not sure if they ship worldwide. Oh, and if you need a tie to go with…

If you’re like me, you probably already hang your headphones from your monitor when you’re not using them. I broke my nice headphones a while ago, so I’m not too worried about the ones that I’m using now. The Workerman MacHook lets you hang yours safely, but with a bit more flair.

The MacHook works with most iMacs and Apple Cinema Displays, and contrasts nicely to the aluminum used in those monitors. It doesn’t fit the 21.5″ models though. The model shown here is made out of Baltic birch, a furniture-grade plywood.

Unfortunately, the plywood beta version of the MacHook is already sold out, but a retail version in different colors and made from recycled plastics will be available soon from Workerman’s online store.

Both keyboards come with anti-ghosting tech, meaning that if you mash a few keys at once, you won’t get glitchy responsiveness. Response time is 1ms and it’s supposed to be very responsive to double- and triple-taps. There’s another keyboard that Corsair released, the K90, but it looks a bit too big to me. The added size comes from 18 programmable keys on the left, which are made for MMOs. But it does comes with cool LED backlighting, which is always nice.

I prefer how minimal the K60 looks. Corsair also released matching mice. Both offer 5700 DPI precision, an aluminum body, and a heavy-duty scroll wheel. The K60 mouse even has a special “sniper button,” while the M90 mouse comes with 15 programmable buttons! Personally, I’d match a K60 keyboard with a M90 mouse.

You can get the K60 Keyboard for $109.99 (USD), and its mouse is $69.99. The K90 keyboard sells for $129.99, while the matching mouse goes for $79.99.

If you’re looking for a surefire way to make your sweet Nintendo 3DS less sexy and more chunky, we have your answer. This Nintendo 3DS circle pad attachment should do the trick. It will make your hand held look… well, not so awesome.
There had been rumors of just such an attachment and now it is confirmed. The image above comes from a Famitsu article revealing the “SECRET SCOOP!” Now this attachment is out and proud. And as I said, it makes your 3DS look chunky. Fat. Husky. Big-boned. Bulky. Thick. In other words, not so pocket-friendly anymore.

The main selling point of this accessory is that it is perfect for Monster Hunter Tri G. That game can take advantage of it’s three extra shoulder buttons and second stick. Makes it a lot more like the Playstation Vita huh? Interesting. Fugly, but interesting. When more info is available we will let you know as always.

In a world with over two billion people, sometimes life can get a little bit too crowded. It’s not always easy (or possible) to run into an empty room and lock yourself in it whenever you need some alone time.

There is, however, something else you can turn to: Privacy Shells.

Thought up by Veasyble, they start out as accessories like handbags, a hat, or a head wrap. When you feel like isolating yourself from the world, just reach out, unfold, and expand the accordion-like accessory you have with you and hide away.

Perhaps the one I find the most interesting is the handbag, which is huge enough to hide away two people inside the shell when unfolded. Sure, you might be able to get a few minutes of privacy with your special someone, but be prepared to be stared and ogled at when you emerge from your shell.

The Veasyble privacy shells are still a concept for now, but for sure you’ll be able to stand up and take notice if ever they’ll be released commercially because they aren’t exactly very subtle.

Now that you’ve cleared up your iPhone’s pipes with the iPlunge, it’s time to do a bit of tweaking with the iWrench. If your old iPlunge iPhone stand is already broken or stuck in some iToilet somewhere, then it’s time to replace with something that continues the plumbing theme it drew upon with this stand right here.

To jog your memory, the iPlunge iPhone stand was comprised of a teeny tiny handle with a red suction on one end. Just plunge it onto the back of your phone and let stand.

The iWrench, however, doesn’t follow in its footsteps. Instead of holding the smartphone up from behind (which, I think, is the more practical way to do it), the iWrench holds your iPhone up by wrenching on to just one side of your phone.

It’s a fun design, no doubt about that. But it just looks a bit unsteady to me, that’s all. But if you want it, you can get it from Strapya World for $8.80.

The thing I hate most about working on the road is that I have to use a tiny notebook keyboard and screen. Even if I use a full-size notebook, the largest screen you generally get is 14-inches or so. That’s not enough space for a person used to a 30-inch desktop LCD. Generally, it’s not easy to take another display with you on the road, but Lenovo has changed that.

Similar to Toshiba’s Mobile Monitor, Lenovo has announced a new portable LCD called the ThinkVision LT1421. It’s a 14-inch 16:9 display, and combined with the screen already on your notebook it will give you a lot more screen real-estate or can also provide display mirroring. It uses a picture frame stand on the back and has 16-levels of brightness. The display is angle adjustable and comes with a cover to protect it on the go. The display is very portable and will make it much easier to get more screen space on the road.

Lenovo is mum on the hard specs of the screen right now, but considering that the thing only needs a single USB connector for power and video, you might not want to run it on full brightness unless you want to drain your battery laptop quickly.

The cool looking LockCircle is an aluminum body cap for DSLRs, designed to replace the cheap – and not too snug-fitting – plastic cap that your DSLR comes with to keep dust out of the sensor are of your DSLR when it has no lens. The plastic body caps aren’t that great as many camera users can attest.

The catch with the awesome looking LockCircle is that the thing costs $100 (USD), which seems like a lot for what it does. There were a lot of people out there wondering why the thing is so expensive when it was announced. Now with this video footage of one being made, it’s a lot clearer now why it costs so much. The LockCircle starts off as a round billet aluminum disc strapped to a CNC lathe machine, eventually taking the form shown in the photo above.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It is so cool to see the billet disc start to spin and then the router bits come in and shave metal off to create the product. You really have to watch the video to see how the thing is made. My favorite part is seeing the laser etching machine burn the name onto the product at the end.

It has been a while since I mentioned the Nyko Zoom for Kinect. This is the little clip on lens system that reduces the range you need to be back when playing the Kinect with your Xbox 360. If you’ve played with the Kinect, you know that by default, you need a pretty big room to get good accuracy with the motion-controller.

If you have a small room, the Zoom for Kinect will reduce the distance you need to stand back from the Kinect by up to 40%. The Zoom needs no drivers or power to operate. The device has a ship date of August 23 and as of now; you can pre-order it at Amazon.

Amazon is selling the device for $29.99 (USD). You can also pre-order at other retailers or just wait until the 23 of the month and you might be able to find it in retail stores. I suspect this will be a very popular accessory for Kinect fans.

I’ve seen a whole lot of quirky and out-of-this-world cases for Apple’s über-popular smartphone, but this one still managed to take me by surprise.

First, because I don’t really understand what could be going on in the minds of the people who came up with this. And second, because I couldn’t imagine who would want to put their iPhone’s in this little bugger.

There’s literally a giant beetle stuck on this case. But don’t fret, the Dokkiri (a Japanese beetle) isn’t real, thank goodness. It just looks pretty darn real.

However, I still wouldn’t want to carry around my phone in a case that’s got a big, plastic bug protruding on the back end. Nuh-uh.

If, for some reason, you’re interested and you’d like to own one of these cases yourself, then you can head on over to Strapya to order one for yourself.

Although now that I think about it, them nature-loving types would probably get a good kick out of dressing up their iPhones in these cases.

Most cameras that you’ve probably encountered only require the push of a button to take a photo. (And if you were born a few decades ago, then you might have come across those where the photographer <del>hides</del> takes the picture behind a black hood.)

Now, with the advancement of technology, mobile devices and smartphones, such as the iPhone, are also being equipped with superior shooters that rival the performance of standalone cameras. However, you don’t get a special camera button with the iPhone. And that’s where the Red Pop comes in – if you give them the chance, that is.

You might have already heard about the iShuttr case that equips your iPhone with a larger flash and a button. But if all you want is the button (and a huge one at that), then the Red Pop is the one you want.

The Red Pop project is now up on Kickstarter, with pledges starting at $25 (a $75 pledge gets you your very own Red Pop button). The story behind and how the invention got its name is also pretty touching. Head on over to Red Pop’s Kickstarter page to find out more about it and maybe help it along by signing up to give a pledge.

After a long hard day at work, you recline in your office seat, prop your feet up on the table (if the boss is out of the office, that is), take your <del>smartfoam</del> smartphone out of its hoodie, and prop it on the Zigstand.

What’s the Zigstand, you may ask? Well, it’s the latest in a large family of smartphone stands but what makes it different is that:
a.) It’s made of foam, and;
b.) It’s convertible.

Then you may ask again, “how is it convertible?” You might want your phone in a more upright position (60°, to be exact) on your table while you’re at work so you can see when new messages or calls come in. Or you can also flip the Zigstand over so it will cradle your device at an angle of 30°, which is perfect for when you want to plug in a connector or cable at the bottom.

The Zigstand is available from Geek Stuff 4 U with a price tag of ¥2,109.00 (~$26 USD). And don’t worry; it only requires some simple assembly.

For a good few decades, the sole purpose of the headphone jack on our Walkmans, Zunes, and iPods was so that we had a place to plug in our headphones to enjoy sounds and audio on a more personal level. And that has worked fine, but apparently, Plugys thinks they can also be used to add to the aesthetics of your device.

Everyone, meet the Plugys. Plugys, meet everyone.

If, for some reason, you’d like to turn any one of your media devices that come with a headphone jack into a plant, a faucet, a bolt, a key, a spring, or a mushroom, then go right ahead and order one of these Plugys.

Strapya World adds that the Plugy is also a useful invention, since “it prevents dirt from getting into the earphone jack.” But we’ve gone for so long without plugging these quirky Plugys into our devices, and I don’t feel like that dirt did much damage on my iPod. What about you?

Anyhow, each of these Plugys go for ¥400 ($4.90), so if you’d like to pre-order one (or two or three or all six), then head right on over to Strapya World.

Now here’s an all-new way to enjoy GarageBand on your iPad. It can get a bit boring after just tapping along to the beat with your fingers and using real drumsticks wouldn’t really be wise, unless you’re set on destroying that beautiful piece of Apple hardware.

But the people behind Pix & Stix are bent on changing that with their nifty old drumsticks with soft electroconducive rubber tips.

They come in basic black and in two equally yummy colors too: vibrant blue and bright yellow. The Pix & Stix are also weighted to give you the best drumming experience while allowing you to grip it comfortably. Each set also comes with a moulded pick with a color that matches your drumsticks for easy and realistic strumming.

It might seem extraneous, going through all this trouble just to play GarageBand in a more realistic way. But I do believe the Pix & Stix can add a whole lot to the overall gaming experience in the end. And just for AUD 14.95 (~$16 USD), too.

If you’re as slow and error-prone as I am with touchscreen typing on your iPhone, this new gadget might be just the thing. While the NUU MiniKey certainly isn’t the first add-on keyboard for the iPhone, it does look nicer than other entries into the category, and has a couple of nice bonus features.

The NUU MiniKey adds slide-out keys to your iPhone 4, with a full QWERTY tactile keyboard, which connects via Bluetooth. The gadget snaps neatly around the back of your iPhone, and even has a thoughtful cutout for your camera and flash.

I also like how the keyboard is backlit and offers some additional niceties like a “cmd” shortcut key that lets you quickly select, cut, copy and paste among other things. There’s also a convenient toggle switch which lets you decide between on-screen and tactile keyboard modes. There’s also a “fn” key which lets you easily access special characters.

Here’s a short video showing off the MiniKey in action as well as how to juice it up:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

U.S. residents can pick up the NUU MiniKey over at Noetic for $79.99 (USD). For resellers around the globe, check out the vendor list over at the NUU website.

If you love Microsoft’s Arc Mouse, then this should be right up your alley. The Void Mouse was designed by Vrouyr Joubanian and he’s streamlined the input device as much as he could – resulting in the most minimal mouse we’ve ever seen. For now, this is still a concept, but it will be interesting to see if it’s ever made.

Like most of Apple’s mice, the Void Mouse has a single button. My guess is that the best way for this to work is a touch surface of some kind, even though the Apple’s Magic Mouse can be frustrating at times, it’s the way to go.

I have trouble picturing where batteries will fit in this design. Most likely, the battery will be rechargeable and shaped in a custom manner, so that it fits inside this chassis – maybe somewhere in the base. It’s nice and minimal, so I guess I like it, but honestly, I’m just fine with my Apple Trackpad.
