Adobe has just announced the latest update to their CS (Creative Suite) Package, CS 5.5. Along with the software enhancements, the company is also introducing subscription options for their programs, allowing people to rent programs such as Photoshop, InDesign and even whole collections for relatively low monthly rates.

The idea of course is to reach out to people who can’t afford to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for Adobe’s software. For example, Photoshop CS5 currently costs $699 (USD), but with the subscription plan you can now use it for as low as $35 a month. Prices are better on a one-year plan, but you can go month-to-month for a little more. Below is a full list of prices:

Watch Adobe’s overview to learn more:

Check out the Creative Suite subscription page for more info including pricing specifics. It goes without saying that there are alternatives – both free and commercial – to Adobe’s software, but if you’re sold then head on to Adobe’s online store.

The quest to bring Flash to Apple’s tablet continues, and we have yet another contender. A developer going by the name of Comex (who also made the iOS jailbreaking software Spirit) has ported the Android Flash runtime to the iPad.

According to Comex, “Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the MobileSafari browser. Frash currently only runs on the iPad, but support for other devices (3GS+ only due to technical restrictions) is planned, as well as support for iOS 4.”

Frash is also neat in that it that it works like the tabs in Chrome; if the plugin crashes, MobileSafari will not be affected. The program is not yet stable though, and currently cannot play video or accept keyboard input. Comex says the latter is a simple task; unfortunately, video playback “will require major reverse engineering of the video decoding frameworks on the iPhone.” Damn… To cheer you up, watch as Comex burninates on the iPad:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Comex has posted the source code at GitHub, in the hope that developers would pitch in with Frash. I don’t think there’s any chance that Apple would approve Frash as an app, so if it’s ever released, I’m pretty sure iPad users will have to jailbreak their tablet and get Frash from Cydia. Good luck Comex!

If you’ve upgraded to Apple’s much-hyped and well-received Snow Leopard, I recommend that you update your system’s Adobe Flash player – even if you already had the latest version prior to the installation. That’s because in the process of installing Snow Leopard, your current Flash player will be replaced by version 10.0.23.1. Both Adobe and computer security company Sophos have verified that if you’ve been updating your Flash player regularly prior to installing Snow Leopard then you’ve just been downgraded, Apple style.

Sadly, the folks in Cupertino don’t warn its customers about this. While it’s not exactly a major oversight, I don’t think it would have been hard to have the Snow Leopard installer end with a prompt telling users to check their Flash players.

Of course you’ll still be able to watch videos of puppies who can’t roll over even if you don’t have the latest version of the Flash player, but you’ll also be less secure because these upgrades are released mostly to address security issues. As of this writing the latest version is 10.0.32.18. You can check the version of the flash player installed on your system by visiting Adobe’s about Flash player page. If you don’t have the latest flash player then I suggest you upgrade. Or you can be macho about it and let the malware come at you.

It’s hard to hang out on these wide internets without appreciating kitschy ‘net-related gear, so of course this RSS pillow caught my eye. It looks nice and soft, and that icon is so homey and familiar that I almost wish I didn’t have a red sofa that would clash with this thing in an eye-shattering sort of way.

And look! You can even scrounge up RSS coasters if you want to do a whole decorative theme!

But we’re talking about pillows here, and at Craftsquatch’s Etsy store, you can get a whole passel of geeky pillows, from designs similar to the Adobe CS icon pillows featured here before to–look! It’s the adorable little Reddit alien.

The pillows may vary in price and design, but they’re all equally adorable.

These are definitely geekier than the ctrl alt del pillows. Each handmade pillow sells for $15 USD (plus shipping), while a 6 piece set – one of each color – sells for only $80 USD (plus shipping), saving you $10. Apparently the pillows have become quite a hit, so in case you’re planning on buying one – or six – of these, expect to wait 7-9 weeks before you get your pillows. Go to My Suite Stuff’s online store to place your order.

Now I’m seriously considering going back to Windows: Microsoft’s beta release of Windows 7 pays off yet again, and the Redmond giant receives more free publicity with Akihabara News‘ real world test of Windows 7 beta on an Sotec (Onkyo) C101K3W Hello Kitty Edition.

The netbook was able to provide decent performance, from normal web surfing while data was being transferred in the background, as well as opening 400 pictures in Bridge, and even editing in Photoshop CS3 despite the fact that the little guy only had a 1.6 Ghz Atom CPU, 1 Gb of RAM, and a couple of Hello Kitty stickers. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can skip to 5:40 for the Bridge and Photoshop action, but if you watch the start of the video you’ll see that the set-up isn’t perfect; HD and Flash HD streaming videos are basically reduced to slideshows. Can’t have everything I guess. But still, the fact that Windows 7 beta runs perfectly well on such weak specs is really good news. I’ll be bootcamping 7 for sure. Unless of course Snow Leopard is better. I think Apple should capitalize on this kind of free publicity and have a 10.6 beta version released, even if it’s just closed beta.

Do you spend a good bit of your time in front of your computer monitor engrossed in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator? Now you can break down that pesky divide between the digital and real worlds with this clever magnetic photo board.

The designers over at Brazil’s Meninos (the same guys who gave us some oh-so-awesome iPhone coasters and pop art hard drives) created these wall-mountable magnetic photo boards that let you hold your pictures in place using those familiar palettes from Photoshop or Illustrator.

Each set comes with a bunch of magnetic palettes, menu bar and a contextual pop-up that you can stick on top of your photos. I always wondered why you couldn’t put your palettes at an angle on your computer. Seems like you should be able to do whatever you want with them – after all it is your computer, right?

Unfortunately, it looks like these are all based on the CS3 Mac versions, and not CS4, so the palettes don’t dock neatly on the side of the monitor. I really hope they include a tiny little spinning beachball magnet as shown in the photo below.

The PS and AI magnetic photo boards are available for pre-order over at the Meninos Shop in 30″ and 20″ widescreen versions, with prices ranging from $65 to $95 USD depending on size and whether you get magnets for one or both programs.

At least Meninos won’t want hundreds of dollars for an upgrade if and when they eventually make a CS4 version.

The latest pocket gaming system isn’t from Nintendo or Sony, but from an upstart little Korean outfit called MyRacer. Their new MF101 portable looks like another media player on the surface, but under the hood, it’s a pocket-sized arcade system.

Sure, it’ll play music and video files in a variety of formats, but the MyRacer will also play a number of Adobe Flash-based games such as those from Korea’s Play4U or Com2uS catalog. It’s not clear to me if it’ll play just any Flash file, or just Flash Lite applications.

Clearly designed with gaming in mind, the system has a pair of directional controls, as well as shoulder buttons. It’s got a cool Flash-based user interface, providing quick access to your media and games. The system has a 320×240 resolution 2.4-inch color LCD screen, and comes with 1GB of on-board memory (expandable via an SD slot).

If you want to get your hands on one of these compact players, you’ll have to see if you can get one exported from a Korean retailer such as GSestore or Knox for 99,000 KRW (appx. $104 USD).

The NuLOOQ plugs into your USB port and provides quick access to frequently used functions in popular graphic design and multimedia applications, with the greatest productivity enhancements available for Adobe’s Creative Suite products. With the controller, you can quickly move slider settings, precisely change brush sizes, zoom in and out and pan around the screen without ever touching your keyboard.
