Ever since seeing This is Spinal Tap, I wanted a Marshall Amp that could go to eleven. But given the fact that I can barely string together two chords on a guitar, I never really saw the use for one of these iconic amps in my house – until today. That’s because the latest Marshall stack isn’t an amp at all – it’s a refrigerator.

It looks just like the classic amp, but the Marshall Fridge is a 4.4 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer perfect for keeping your beer and pop on ice. And unlike the video clip and images here, you are not required to fill yours with Budweiser. Personally, I’d prefer to load mine up with some Bell’s Ale or maybe some bottles of Bawls.

Needless to say, Marshall wisely included knobs that go to eleven on the top of the fridge as well, making it the perfect addition to any music geek’s hangout. I only wish they figured out a way to include an actual speaker in the door, so it could work as both a fridge and an amp. Still, it’s pretty awesome.

Marshall expects to start shipping the Marshall Fridge this October for $299 (USD), and you can get on the pre-order notification list here.

It’s the beginning of CES 2012, and just like every year, there are lots of new toys around to make life easier. I spotted Griffin’s Twenty making the rounds, and thought that it would definitely be useful since it can turn any speaker into an AirPlay-compatible one.

This is basically a solution if you have speakers that aren’t AirPlay-compatible, which is probably most of us. Instead of replacing them, you can just get the Griffin Twenty and plug in your AirPort Express base station. Then you’ll just have to wire in your speakers and you can stream songs from your iOS device wirelessly to your speakers. I have to say it’s a pretty cool idea.

As its name hints, the Twenty outputs 20 watts-per-channel, and it connects to the Airport Express via its digital output, ensuring the most pristine audio. Griffin hasn’t yet announced a price or a release date, but I’m guessing it’s going to be sold soon. You’ll also need to add your own spare AirPort Express base station to make it work.

If you’ve gotten tired of the cheap plastic speaker docks that are flying around, then you should be pretty happy with this new wooden dock from Samsung. This is an upscale dock and features vacuum tube technology, which is kind of cool since the resulting sounds should be warmer than your typical digital amp.

The Samsung Audio Dock’s hybrid amp system combines digital amplification with vacuum tubes. The 2.1-channel speaker comes with a built-in subwoofer and produces 100 watts of sound. It has USB and analog audio inputs, support for AllShare, AirPlay and Bluetooth wireless audio streaming, and the dock is capable of accepting either iOS or Samsung Galaxy devices.

The DA-E750 is the flagship model, but there’s a 40-Watt DA-E670 model as well, which skips the fancy vacuum tube setup, and looks nearly as good. Pricing and a release date has yet to be announced.

I have no musical talent, though I always thought playing the guitar would be cool. However, I lacked the dedication and drive to actually practice. If you are the sort that likes to rock on your guitar wherever you might be and you appreciate retro design check this out. Yamaha has a couple of cool new amps that are meant to be used for on-the-go jams and practice sessions, rather than on the big stage.

The Yamaha THR5 and THR10 portable amps look like something from the 60′s packed with tubes, but they are fully digital inside. The only real difference I can tell between the two models is that the THR10 is a bit wider and has 5 user banks for storing presets. Both models have stereo sound and they both have the ability to connect to a computer or phone. They have all sorts of VCM effects to mimic different amp types, various pedal effects, and more. They even cast an orange glow inside to mimic old tube amps.

You can use the amps on the go with AA battery power or plug them into the wall outlet. Yamaha is also bundling Cubase AI for recording music, and a software package called THR editor for modifying amp and effect properties. Both of the amps will launch in January here in the States, and pricing is unannounced at this time, though you can already find them in Japan, with the THR5 selling for ¥19,800 (~$254 USD) and the THR10 selling for ¥29,800 (~$382 USD)

Hand-built by some guy simply going by the name “Marcn,” this isn’t any ordinary can of beans. It’s a can of HEINZ BEANZ, baked beans in a deliciously rich tomato sauce! All kidding aside, what you’re looking at is actually a custom mini amp, perfect for electric guitar or keyboard practice. It gets its juice from a USB port, and there’s a guarantee that all beans have been removed.

Want it? Head on over to marcn’s Etsy shop now. I have a funny feeling there aren’t a whole bunch of these being made.

If someone in your family suddenly develops an interest in learning how to play the guitar, giving him or her the 2-watt Micro-CUBE amplifier by Roland will help ensure that your neighbors won’t kill you. That’s not to say you’ll be giving your loved one a gimped amp; the Micro-CUBE doles out full sound and clean tone. It also has a few tricks up its teeny tiny sleeves, such as models – iconic sounds from classic amplifiers that can be digitally applied to the input – and a few effects like reverb, flanger and phaser.

The amp is powered by a 9V DC adapter, but it can also run on 6 AA batteries. Measuring only about 10″ x 7 ” x 9″ and weighing just about 7 lbs., the Micro-CUBE is also the perfect camping buddy, for when your kids discover Dashboard Confessional and are possessed by an urge to go to the woods and cry in front of a bonfire. Here’s a video review of the amp from Jeff Bragg of Cool Tools:

While this thing certainly looks like some sort high-end audiophile device, it’s actually a cheap desktop speaker for your computer that’s just masquerading as a schmancy tube amp.

Created by Japan’s Hanwha, the tube look-a-like speaker plugs into the USB port and audio jack on your computer, and lights up in a cool blue when powered on. Now don’t expect tube-amp quality sound from this thing – it only cranks out an anemic 0.35W per channel, and frequency range is spec’d at just 100Hz to 10kHz. Hoo-boy. I think my old Sony Walkman can do more than that through its headphones. Good thing it only costs ¥2,280 (appx. $25 USD).

So now that I’ve got you all excited to buy one, you’ll have to head on over to Japan’s Rakuten if you want one of these. I think I’ll stick with my slightly less crappy computer speakers for now.

These nifty little speaker systems look just like classic electric guitar amps, only a whole lot smaller. Modeled after classic amps by musical greats Marshall and US Blues, these teensy little amps are perfect for the rocker in your house.

Measuring in between 5 and 8 inches tall, they’re perfect scale replicas of their larger brethren, and great for listening to tunes on your iPod or other portable media player. Of course if you’re more musically-inclined, you can plug in your electric guitar or bass and jam out too.

I think my favorite of the bunch has to be the ORANGE micro Crush amp, complete with its trademark bright orange wooden case, a woven cloth speaker grille and the unmistakable ORANGE logo.

All three are available over at Urban Outfitters. Prices range from $60 to $72 USD. Totally rockin’.

If you’ve ever seen the movie Castaway you know that Chuck Noland, the character Tom Hanks played, existed on coconut meat for quite some time before getting back to civilization. When I look at this cool amp with coconut shell cover created by Steve Lodefink it makes me wonder what parts of the movie they edited out.

Did Chuck have any rhythm? Did he make percussion instruments out of the other coconuts? Do you think the first Guitar Hero game might have been created on Gilligan’s Island? Perhaps they made instruments out of palm fronds and rope from the boat to put on a show! Discuss amongst yourselves… and see more fun photos of Steve’s tinkering over on his Flickr stream.

If you thought the Air Guitar Pro I showed you was for musical wannabes, I’ve dug up this truly amazing new gadget those of you who take your guitar talents more seriously.

Line 6′s Pocket POD is a handheld device that plugs in between your guitar and your amp, and lets you add a huge number of studio-quality sound effects to your jams. It’s loaded with sonic profiles that simulate the sound of a variety of amps, cabinets, microphones, and even recording studio acoustics. The Pocket POD can also add all sorts of effects like chorus, echo, flanger and tremelo to your melodic stylings.

In addition, the pint-sized effects powerhouse crams in over 300 presets that were programmed by professional musicians from bands like Maroon 5, P.O.D., Dashboard Confessional and 311 to name a few. Plug it into your computer, and you can create your own tone library or download thousands created by guitarists around the world.

All of this power comes packed into a device that’s only about 5″ x 3.5″ x 2″, and runs off of AAA batteries (or a power adapter when you’re not on the move.) You can even plug in your MP3 player for a backing track, and then hook up your headphones so you can have a complete portable jam session. The Pocket POD is available now for about $129.99.

Be sure to check out the video of the Pocket POD in action here.
