What I love about this watch is that they managed to capture the TARDIS design so perfectly, while still retaining its functionality as a watch. The strap is blue of course, with a nice “Police Box” detail near the clasp and the watch face is the white design on the TARDIS door proclaiming that it is free for use of the public.

I think they have hit a homerun with this one and it isn’t super expensive either, at just $49.99(USD). You can find it at Entertainment Earth. It is available for pre-order now and it will come in August. Best Doctor Who watch ever!

If you grew up in the 1970s or early 1980s, there’s a good chance you had one of those mechanical flip alarm clocks by your bedside. I had one – and being an inquisitive child, I fully disassembled it to see how it all worked. Suffice it to say, there were so many tiny pieces, that I never managed to put it back together, and my parents had to buy me a new clock. So knowing just how complex the mechanism is in a flip clock, I can barely believe that there’s someone out there making them by hand.

Ukranian artist Mykola Kolomieyets is just that person. He designed all of the components for the clock and uses CNC machining technology to cut all the parts. He then hand-assembles them to create a functional timepiece. On the surface, these clocks look a bit like their mass-produced predecessors, but they’re so much more special having been built by hand.

Each clock uses a set of spinning mechanical plates to tell the current hour and minutes, and the clock is backlight for nighttime viewing as well. You can choose from a 12 hour or 24 hour version as well. The base model doesn’t include an alarm, so it’s best used in your living room or on a desk, but that’s probably for the best, since this thing makes a rather noticeable “tick” sound every time the hour or minute changes.

There is a more expensive alarm version too, but I’d be afraid that it would keep me up at night. Still, it’s an impressive bit of work if you ask me.

The handmade flip clocks are available over at Mykola’s Etsy shop for $165(USD) without an alarm, and $250 with an alarm, and come in a couple of different finishes. You can check out some of Mykola’s other mechanical clock designs over on his YouTube page.

This watch has a distinctive face, that looks like it was folded by an expert at origami. British designer Benjamin Hubert created this for Italian accessory maker Nava. The Plicate watch has its increments integrated as three dimensional surfaces, which definitely gives it a cool look.

Plicate’s display is modeled after the pleats found in folded paper fans. The strap has some interesting features as well. The underside of the strap is designed to let the air flow between the band and arm, preventing the build up of sweat. The buckle is replaced by an asymmetrical clasp, which allows users to easily remove the watch, while keeping it securely fastened.

Plicate is the second watch that Benjamin Hubert created for Nava, and it was on display during the 2012 Salone del Mobile. There’s no word yet as to where or when you can buy the Plicate watch, but you might want to keep an eye out on the Nava website.

I’m a big fan of cool and unusual watches, but I can’t decide if I love or hate the design of this particular timepiece. When you first look at the face of the Concentric watch from 666 Barcelona, it just looks like sensory overload. But upon further examination, you realize that the numbers around the dial of this stainless steel watch all make perfect sense – there’s just a whole lot of them.

Basically, the Concentric is an ordinary analog watch, but the numbers around the dial are there to tell you hours, minutes and seconds. The innermost ring offers up the current hour, while the middle ring shows minutes, and the outer ring is seconds. Simply line up the appropriate hand with the appropriate dial, and there you have the time. This may all seem like overkill, since most of us can read a watch without all of these extraneous numeric indicators, but I still kind of like the idea that you can be a little more precise with this than with a traditional watch face. Plus, it just looks cool. Though you might get dizzy looking at all of those numbers.

If you like the design of the Concentric, you can find it over at Watchismo for $119.99(USD). They’re currently out of stock, but can special order one for you.

Turntables can certainly be used to make art – but I usually think of them as a tool for auditory creation, not visual so much. Not so in this project, which transformed a couple of ordinary turntables into a drawing machine.

Designer Robert Howsare created the decidedly low-tech Drawing Apparatus using a pair of old record players, whose platters have each been connected to a hinged wooden armature. This arm has a Sharpie on the end of it, which draws geometric patterns as the pen glides along the surface of the paper.

I’m duly impressed by the unique, Spirograph-like shapes this thing ends up drawing as the turntables go round and round. It looks like each turntable is running at a different speed in order to vary the geometry and create unique artworks with every play.

I only wonder if there would be some way to keep the needles on the records so it could play music at the same time. I’m guessing the wooden arms would quickly derail the needle. Still, it’s a pretty cool effect, and the sound it makes as it goes around drawing is kind of mesmerizing on its own.

This has to be one of the most organic-looking watch designs that I’ve seen in a long time. The Grow watch was designed by the London-based Shiro Studio for the Italian design house of Alessi. The patterns are supposed to evoke the act of growing, but they also remind me of ripples in a pond.

The complete surface of the watch is covered with a ribbed texture, reminiscent of plants and muscle fibers. The ripples are even integrated into the watch face. The ripples start out subtly on the watch band but grow in intensity as they coalesce into the watch’s face. While this may slightly distort the view of its analog hands, it doesn’t make it dramatically harder to read.

The Grow watch was presented in Basel this March and will be manufactured by Seiko for Alessi later this year.

The hands of this watch are elongated so that they cross like a X, and the hour hand has a small indicator at the end so you know which one it is. Each of the teeth around the perimeter represents an hour, so it’s pretty straight-forward. That being said, I’ve never had trouble telling the time with analog clocks, even if there were no numbers on the face. It’s the crazy digital ones which can be really tricky.

It’s also very substantial, with a face made of solid titanium. But before you get all excited about this timepiece, let me just tell you that this particular Horizon Ikepod will sell at Westime for $14,000 (USD). Guess I won’t be buying one any time soon.

Everyone knows that time is supposed to be linear (at least the way that we experience it), but our usual representation is circular, since the watch face and clock face were designed for the convenience of returning their hands to the 12 o’clock position, not necessarily usability. This clock takes time and represents it in a more linear fashion with a minimal facade which conceals a rotating scroll that indicates the time.

The Lineær Clock was designed by Audun Ask Blaker. The clock features no illumination or digital displays, and promises a very quiet-running mechanism. Some people will say that it’s too minimal, but I like the fact that you can easily and quickly tell the time with it, and it doesn’t take up much space.

From the looks of this illustration, the overall mechanics behind it don’t seem too complicated either.

It’s a cool time-telling concept, but for now, it’s just that – a concept. Only time will tell if the Lineær clock will ever be produced.

This unusual watch harks back to the era of analog photography. The watch is a tribute to cameras and it includes a face that looks like a shutter, and a dial that looks like a lens.

The watch was conceived by Finnish designer Nils Kajander and was shortlisted in designboom’s competition for the renowned Italian watchmaker BREIL. The Paparazzo watch was inspired by some of recent BREIL TV ads that features a classic camera.

In addition to the obvious shutter and lens design elements, the lens ring functions as a calendar, and the self-timer knob acts as the watch’s crown.

Of course, the way it’s designed, I’m surprised that there’s not a tiny digital camera built into the middle of the face, so you could snap pictures with it. Maybe if they decide to make it, they’ll include that enhancement.

This concept watch might look like a dual time zone watch, thanks to the fact that it’s basically composed of two watches linked together. But it actually tells time in just one time zone – hours on the left, minutes on the right.

The spli-T-ime concept was created by the designer Paul Kweton. You’d expect the faces to be smaller, so that the overall footprint wasn’t so big, but you’d be wrong. Each face appears to be the size of a normal watch. His watch has got two big faces, hinged together – allowing you to glance at them quickly and get the right time by looking at both faces.

There have been other watches with multiple faces, but none that I can remember that were as big as this one. Maybe once it gets into production, it will shrink. Nevertheless, it’s a unique timepiece that will take up most of your arm, and will attract looks from anyone who sees it.

You don’t see very many watch designs that truly stand out. At least not many that are affordable. Mostly they are all just wristbands with a slab of dial attached. And even the more unusual designs are simply different displays set into a traditional watch face. This Round-the-Clock bracelet concept watch is different and the name is very appropriate.

This interesting concept comes from Körös Benedek and features three analog bands that travel 360 degrees around it’s surface. Individual bands have the hour, minute and seconds on them. You get the correct time by reading the break in the middle of the bracelet as the bands move into position.

Should it ever become a reality, it would be made from materials like stainless steel, plastic, and rubber. Too bad we can’t buy one right now. I’m sure they would sell very well.

The Love Box is an analog video mixer for iPhones and it’s not an app or add-on, nor is it filled with complex buttons and dials. Nope, it’s a box with some mirrors. That’s all there is to it.

The Love Box was created by the Honest & Smile agency in Barcelona, Spain and it was conceived for a documentary film as a simple way of capturing both sides of a conversation in a single shot, using an iPhone. It’s a wooden box which pops open to reveal a tray inside. It’s got a slot for an iPhone, and a carefully positioned mirror which you line up about 1/2 way in front of the camera’s lens. It requires a little fiddling with the angle to get it just right, but once set, it allows you to shoot split-screen videos and stills.

It’s definitely an interesting idea, but you’ll have to shell out €58 (~$78 USD) on Etsy for what amounts to a few blocks of wood and a small mirror positioned in the right spot. I suppose if you’re the DIY type, you could make your own if you don’t want to spend the money.

These quirky timepieces will display the time as an constantly evolving artwork on your wall. The fact that it does so with bright, lively, and vibrant displays is just one of the major features of its design.

The project is currently up on Kickstarter, where almost half of the $15,000 has been reached by interested contributors, with about 1 month to go. If you’re interested in getting one of these gorgeous clocks for yourself, then a minimum pledge of $45 is needed.

Remember that futuristic concept watch I told you about yesterday, FOUR? It had all the makings of a great watch, except that it was way too complicated for my taste.

Watch designs featured by Tokyoflash are usually extremely complicated, which makes reading the time off of them – which happens to be the main purpose of watches, by the way – more difficult than necessary. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I chanced upon the Trax MkII Concept Watch.

The watch was designed by Peter Fletcher from the UK, and draws on obvious military themes as its inspiration. That’s pretty much apparent as it uses tank-like treads to tell the time. Unlike other watch displays that flash a series of LED lights and leave all the time reading interpretation up to you, the Trax MkII tells it like it is: with good, old-fashioned digits.

As the time changes, the numbered treads move into position. Just read the numbers found between the LED illuminated brackets in the middle to know what time of day it is – in military time, of course.

On the design, Peter explains: “I wanted to come up with a watch design based on driven belts. The first thought that popped into my head when thinking about belts was caterpillar tracks and what caterpillar tracks are usually attached too. So I decided to use tanks as an inspiration for this watch concept.”

Execution of this particular design will require a fairly complex mechanism to be built, but if you’d like to see it produced some day, be sure to cast your vote over on the Tokyoflash design blog.

I’m a fan of unusual watches, and Ziiiro has made quite a few distinctive ones lately. Their new Proton and Ion watches are no exception. While the Ion will please people who like traditional analog watches, the Proton follows what Ziiiro has tried to do with some of their other models.

The Proton watch is quite unusual, especially if you choose the transparent band. Just like some of their other watches, the Proton doesn’t have any markings. You tell the time using two transparent gradient disks. Blue represents the hours and yellow indicates the minutes.

The Ion is more of a traditional analog watch, with two hands, and a brushed metal face. Both models are available in white, transparent, and transparent smoke wrist bands, and you can actually swap out the band later if you decide you’d rather go with one of the other colors.

You can get the Proton for €129 (~$170 USD) and the Ion for €105 (~$139 USD) over at Ziiiro’s online shop.

Here’s another cool watch concept from designer Peter Fletcher I found floating around up on the Tokyoflash design blog. While it might look like a futuristic LCD timepiece, the Arcane Quad Orbit watch is actually fully mechanical.

Instead of telling time with LED or LCD segmented displays, the Arcade Quad Orbit would tell time using turning disks. Each disk would contain abstract looking symbols, which actually comprise the elements of a digital seven-segment display, and these would spin into place behind a mask in order to reveal the current hour and minutes.

It’s really quite striking, and what I rather like about it is that the design seems completely feasible. All they need to do is to work out a mechanism which would independently drive each turning disk, and the rest of it is just finding a quality manufacturer to build it.

Peter thinks that it’s possible that if a custom disk was used for the hours, the other three disks could be powered using an off-the-shelf analog movement.

As is always the case with watch concepts on the Tokyoflash design blog, there’s a chance this watch will actually be produced if there’s enough positive feedback. If you dig it, head on over and show your support. While you’re over there, be sure to poke around and look at some of the other innovative and unusual watch concepts being shown off.

The Nintendo Gameboy. One of the most iconic portable gaming systems in the history of video games. Its brick-sized form has occupied many a nerd for hours on end with it’s monochrome green-grey display and carnival like sounds. How could you possibly wring more geek joy out of this device? By turning it into a geeky musical instrument of course.

This Kickstarter project aims to transform an original Gameboy into a retro music instrument that has analog controls and a stereo/mono switch, along with a bunch of retro sounds.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So if your band needs some extra geeky sounds, here’s your new member. The kit improves the outdated Gameboy audio, adding controls for cutoff, resonance, bypass, and envelope follower. It’s hard to describe, so watch that video and turn up the volume for some chiptune fun.

A pledge of $90 will get your a bare-bones kit to do the mod yourself, while $174(USD) will get you a modded Gameboy and 6 volt power supply.

Remember the old SEGA arcade classic OutRun? Well one geek out there sure does, as he decided to take the game and create an analog version as a tribute. The game is powered by an Arduino board, along with various servo motors and sensors.

This real-world version of OutRun was built by a guy named Gustavo. It has little cars which speed down an endless-loop racetrack as the driver steers to avoid obstacles. The controller has a steering wheel from an R/C car, and miniature gas and brake pedals you can control with your fingertips. A scrolling backdrop contains the obstacle cars, while your vehicle is on a motorized track that moves it side to side. LEDs and photosensors are used to detect when your car reaches the edges, and magnetic sensors detect when you’ve collided with another vehicle. Here’s a video showing Gustavo’s analog OutRun game in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The funny thing about this is that SEGA’s 1960s arcade game Grand Prix was actually analog, and used similar mechanical principles, as you can see in the video below:

I love simple designs that still manage to greatly improve upon an already existing device. That’s exactly what we have here with this watch from designers Gennady Martynov and Emre Centinkprulu.

The Zoomin Watch is modern and minimal, and it enhances the time-telling experience at the same time. Using a simple analog face, it tells hours around the central dial, and minutes around the perimeter. But the nifty trick up its sleeve is that the rotating time indicators are tiny magnifying lenses.

This makes it extraordinarily easy to read the time at a glance. Plus, it just plain looks cool. The design also calls for a glow-in-the-dark background, which would make it just as easy to read at night.

So what’s not to like about the Zoomin Watch? Absolutely nothing – except for the fact that it doesn’t yet exist, and is only a design concept. All I can say is that somebody better get off their butts and start making these now. I know I’d buy one.

Thanks to today’s mobile gadgets, I am not a watch wearer, as I have mentioned on several occasions. I do like to check out cool watches though, and if I were going to use a watch, the UR-1001 from Urwerk would be it. Though this isn’t a wristwatch like the 103.8 from the same company, the UR-1001 is a pocket watch and it looks pretty awesome.

The watch has the normal hour, minute, second, day, and month hands. On the rear, it also has a timer for 1000 years and for 100 years. There is also an oil change timer, which is when the watch needs to be serviced (not your car). The complex timepiece has an all mechanical movement.

I like the movement of the hands on the front too. It has three rotating and spinning spires for the month and a counter for the power in the front too. The hour hands spin as well. Pricing information isn’t offered for the UR-1001, but I’m sure this will be an expensive watch.
