This new coffee maker looks like it came straight out of the future to pour some hot java in your cup. The effect is supposed to mimic a “rich waterfall of coffee.” I’m not too sure about that, but it does look pretty unusual.

This modern coffee maker was designed by HJC Design, a Yorkshire-based consultancy firm for Peel UK. The ultramodern countertop appliance was inspired by the drip and flow of coffee, which is simulated by the rippled stainless steel hot plate in the base. It’s encircled by a glowing ring of soft blue LEDs when it’s brewing coffee.

All those lights should using a coffee maker in the dark easier. I don’t know how well the coffee from this machine will taste, but it will certainly look good brewing it.

There’s no word yet on when or where you’ll be able to buy one.

I don’t live in a dry climate, so I’ve rarely needed a humidifier, but if I did, I’d like one like this please. The Alianoid Humidifier was designed by Minwoo Lee and was inspired by alien robots from outer space. The small appliance has a unique look to distinguish itself from all of the others that are already available.

Alianoid looks like an alien robot that keeps on venting steam in anger. It’s got stubby little legs, a rotund body and bulbous head. There are some simple controls at the bottom to indicate water levels and the desired steam output.

For now, this is just a concept design, but hopefully someone will make it a reality so that we can all have this little space guy keeping our nasal passages clear someday.

Think you’ll be seeing a lot of disposable appliances and tech in the future? Loughborough University student Jake Tyler thinks so. He designed this concept, and it was then picked up by European vacuum maker Vax. Their Vax Ev is a high performance vacuum cleaner made for optimum sustainability – and it’s made out of cardboard.

As you may have gathered, its case is made out of recycled and recyclable materials. The vacuum cleaner is actually made out of the box it comes in. You have to pop panels into place around the motor housing, then you can use it. There is no glue required. This is kind of cool, because producing cardboard is a lot cheaper than plastic – and it’s better for the environment.

Vax is planning on doing a limited run of this vacuum cleaner. Then, if it sells well, we’ll see a bunch of them available. I wonder how this compares to my Dyson?

I don’t currently have an air purifier in my house, but I have to say that I’ve never seen an air purifier like this. The Coway AP-1008 is an elegant machine that sets itself apart from the rest with its unique design.

It comes in two models, a premium leather-finished one or a modern white one. Hmm, leather. Apparently, despite its overall slim shape, it’s supposed to be more powerful than conventional air purifiers, thanks to the ultra-thin filter.

This purifier is available from a variety of online retailers from $350-500 (USD). I found several over at Amazon. The price seems like a bit much for an air purifier, but if you’re looking for something that really looks good, you should check it out.

When I was a kid my grandmother had this set of plates that had gold leaf on them. When she got her first microwave, I used to sneak into the kitchen and put one of the plates in the microwave to see the sparks it created. It’s a good thing there was no YouTube when I was a kid. The only thing keeping me from trying out the old “brick in the washing machine trick” at my house right now is that I am the one who would have to pay for a new machine. If you are in the same boat, you will have to make do with the video of this dude killing his washing machine in fantastic style by tossing bricks inside it during the spin cycle.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

One brick made the machine smoke and vibrate a lot. Once the second brick was added all hell breaks loose and some innocent flowers are killed in the process. This is much better than the Will it Blend stuff.

I don’t like coffee much. I like the way it smells sometimes, but I hate the way it tastes. The only way I can imagine coffee being even grosser is if it was brewed with a concrete filter.

This new Lavazza concept espresso machine has surfaced with a body made out of two pieces of molded concrete. The thing looks very industrial and would probably fit right in at Steve Jobs’ house.

The parts that actually make the espresso appear to be stainless steel. The water goes into a drawer for brewing. The only particularly unpleasant sounding part is that the coffee beans appear to go into a hopper that puts them right next to the concrete. Mmmm. Coffee and concrete.

Android is really hot right now with many of the world largest makers of smartphones and other gadgets looking to the open source OS, and consumers adopting it in droves. I guess this is the reason some weird products are surfacing with Android as their only redeeming quality. A good example of a weird product that uses Android to grab its 15-minutes of fame is the “Appresso” espresso maker.

The thing has a dock on top for your Android phone. When docked the phone can read the QR code on top of the little containers of coffee you put inside. Once the barcode-like QR code is read, the Android device docked to it will play music to go along with the drink.

I wonder if you spill the hot espresso on yourself if the thing can play the Eddie Murphy parody of James Brown from SNL. You know the one “Too hawt in the hawt tub, burnt myself!”

LG recently announced the “commercial launch” (what does that really mean?) of a 23-in LCD monitor that can display 3D images in full HD resolution. Dammit. I don’t even own a plain 2D HDTV and it’s already becoming obsolete. Daaaaamn youuuu progress!

The monitor is meant to be used with a pair of shutter glasses for 3D viewing, but it can also be switched to display good ol’ 2D. LG boasts that the monitor “offers picture quality that is almost twice as crisp as HD 3D displays currently available in the market.” Considering the fact that barely anyone owns an HD 3D-capable display, I’d say that things are really moving too fast right now. Before this monitor hits the market at prices a normal human being can afford I’m sure LG will have already released a 60″ 4D Ultra HD display that’s powered by the viewer’s attention, with built-in popcorn popper and fridge.

Bodum’s Bistro flatbed toaster is a versatile device. Thanks to its design, the 700 w toaster can heat, toast or defrost almost any size or shape of bread.

The design has its drawbacks of course, like being able to toast only one side at a time, so that may be a deal breaker for some folks. But if you’re looking to liven up your kitchen, then you’ll be glad to know that the Bistro comes in all sorts of crazy colors.

Or I guess I should say it will come in all sorts of crazy colors; I’m not sure, but I think right now only the default color scheme is available. You can get the Bistro flatbed toaster at Amazon for $80 (USD). Are you insane and would rather pay an extra $10? Then get it at Hammacher Schlemmer. And oh I just thought of another drawback: compared to the common slot-loading toaster, it’s easier to accidentally burn yourself on a flatbed toaster. At least it’ll only burn one side at a time, right? Right?

The compact coffee maker features a clean white design, with a choice of four accent colors: kiwi (green), mango (yellow), berry (red) and stone (dark grey). And yes, it includes the perfectly-fitted ceramic mug. The brilliantly minimal design even won a 2007 red dot award for its creators.

At this point, the Coffee Pad is only available in a European 220-volt configuration, so you’ll need a power converter to use it here in the States. It’s available now from French online retailer Singulier for €139 (appx. $198 USD).

A team of industrial designers have come up with a truly unique concept in home appliances for the Electrolux Design Lab competition, the modular refrigerator.

The NFridge reimagines the design of typical refrigerators by splitting the fridge into small, stackable compartments. Each section could be moved independently, and would provide self-contained, earth-friendly cooling using magnetic refrigeration technology. I don’t know if we’ll ever see something like get produced, but it does seem like a good idea for small spaces that might not have a dedicated kitchen space.
