These days, you can do anything and find almost everything with applications that you can download and run on your phone. You can bang out some awesome beats without needing any drumsticks with the TableDrum, get a virtual boob job and some lipo on the side with BuildMyBod, and name your future son/daughter with the Kick to Pick app.

Everything still sounds all PG or PG-13 and wholesome, right? That is, of course, before the advent of LocalSin, which is an Android/iOS app that helps you hook up with a one night stand and increases the odds of you getting lucky by up to 90%. (I’m not sure where they got their statistics, though.)

The app has you fill out your profile, maps out your current location, and places markers on the places where other “willing” singles are waiting to hook up with someone else as well. You can check out their profiles, view a photo, and send others a message, if you’re interested in them.

LocalSin isn’t my cup of tea, but it could be yours. (And it could also attract some sexual predators and other creepy people, so better be careful if you’re planning to use this app to meet some people.)

Ever tried using your iPhone with gloves on? It doesn’t work very well. Believe me, I’ve tried. Yes, I also know that there are plenty of special gloves out there, and even ways to convert traditional gloves to work with touchscreens. However, I can’t seem to stress enough just how lazy I can be sometimes. I actually wear fingerless gloves most of the time to curb this problem, but there’s another solution. Follow your nose.

Nosedial is a $.99 app for your iPhone that makes your phone nose-friendly. Basically what it does is gives you very large icons for each of your contacts. You can scroll, and tap them with your nose. The unfortunate thing is that you’ll not only have to figure a way to unlock the phone, but also tap on the icon for this app. While interesting in theory, I don’t think it would be terribly practical.

There are already a several programs and browser extensions that can block access to the Internet for a set amount of time, but what makes SelfControl stand out is that it is ruthless. Designed by Steve Lambert, once SelfControl’s timer is set, it is set – quitting the application, restarting your computer or even deleting the damn app will not reset the timer. You’ll have to wait for it to expire before you can view cat videos again. Damn.

Fortunately, SelfControl can be set to only block access to certain websites or email. At least if you set it to allow email to go through, you can still tell your boss that your SelfControl is preventing you from working.

SelfControl was originally made for OS X only; you can download it for free at Steve Lambert’s website. A Linux version is being developed by a third party and is in version 0.9 as of this writing; download it here. Think you can improve Steve’s SelfControl? Get the code at github and mess with it.

Ten One Design’s app could be a godsend to artists who can’t afford a full-fledged tablet. It can be used with any pen-like object, but when combined with the company’s Pogo Sketch pen, Inklet adds touch-sensitivity to your unibody MacBook/MacBook Pro’s trackpad.

Inklet also has handwriting recognition and supports a variety of applications, including Pixelmator, Circus Ponies NoteBook, Photoshop CS3, CS4 and Elements, Corel Painter and even Word 2008. It also detects “unwanted” trackpad touches, say when your palm is resting on the trackpad.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As great as it seems to be, Inklet doesn’t change the fact that the MacBook/MacBook Pro trackpad is quite small, so if you need a bigger area then you might find the Inklet too cumbersome. But if you’re strapped for cash or if you’re just starting to learn how to use graphics editing programs, Inklet may be just the thing for you. You can buy Inklet at Ten One Design for $25 (USD); a downloadable demo is also available at the website. Inklet is Mac-only, and it only works with the multitouch trackpads.

Web addicts rejoice: you can now view your feeds right on your desktop. Or should I say right over your desktop. Open source program Feedling lets Windows users pin headlines over their wallpaper. The location, font, colors and update interval of the feeds can be customized.

Looks like that poor dog is confused by the feeds. I can’t test the program myself since I’m on a Mac (without Parallels), but I think that you’ll need to sweep your icons off of your desktop and use an application launcher instead if you want to use Feedling, otherwise you might have a hard time selecting both feeds and icons.

Feedling has been tested on Windows XP, Vista and 7, and is available at SourceForge. Check out MakeUseOf for detailed instructions on setting up Feedling.

Meet Desi. He’s in front of an HP MediaSmart computer, which has a fancy face tracking software that allows its webcam to follow your face within the confines of the frame. Desi may look like a happy guy, but he’s definitely not. Why?

In his words: “As soon as White Wanda appears, the camera moves. Black Desi gets in there…oh nope! No facial recognition there.”

Desi and Wanda were right to post this on YouTube – maybe it’ll get HP to respond and fix the problem. But I think the two should have tested the software on other people too. Who knows, maybe Desi has something on him – aside from his skin color of course – that borks the software. What do you humans – regardless of gender, race, religion, or preference of computer – think?

Space puns ftw! NASA recently released a free iPhone app that promises a ton of content for space fans, including mission details, videos, images, and twitter feeds. The mission portion is probably the geekiest part of the app, allowing users to read mission details, view launch or arrival countdown clocks, and even follow the orbit of certain spacecraft.

The images section will surely be a hit, because it’s basically a treasure trove of cool and free wallpapers for you iPhone. There are two galleries available – the NASA image of the day and the Astronomy picture of the day. Is there any difference between the image of the day and the picture of the day?

The videos and updates sections offer more content, with YouTube clips in the former and twitter feeds in the latter.

Check out the app’s official page for more info. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can download it here (iTunes link). Do you think the other government agencies should come up with their own apps? I wonder what the IRS app would offer.

This is how things are in the browser world: Opera never recovered from its commercial days, Safari is… okay I guess, Firefox is customizable, Chrome is speedy, and Internet Explorer is owned by a powerful company with lots of money. Case in point: the big M is giving away $10,000 (USD) to a lucky (?) surfer willing to use Internet Explorer 8. That’s how they flounder roll at Redmond.

Yes, Microsoft is willing to pay you to use their browser. That’s all there is to it. Of course you could say that IE 8 isn’t necessarily as bad as the previous versions; it’s just that the browser’s reputation is so tarnished that people have to be given a little encouragement to try the latest spawn. Also, the ad that The Gadget Blog took a shot of must be an earlier version, as it is slightly more specific in terms of identifying who the IE 8′s archenemy is:

So how about it? Are you willing to join the hunt? Start here if you’re game. What? You want some tips? Let’s see: the instructions say that the prize in hidden is “a cleverly concealed webpage that only Internet Explorer 8 can view.” Hmmm. Well then I bet the prize is hidden in something like this. Either that or a page within the Windows Update site.

One more thing: wouldn’t it be funny though if someone using the IE Tab extension on Firefox found the hidden webpage? Or if we find out that Windows 7 will be sold for $10,001? Or…nah I’m all out.

Looking for a cheap thrill (ride)? Why not avoid paying the $50 admission and standing in endless lines at your local theme park and instead ride a tiny roller coaster that you can keep in your pocket?

Ziconic’s SkyCoaster 3D puts a miniature roller coaster simulator inside your iPhone. The application lets you take a ride on countless insanely impossible twisty and turny coasters. Thanks to a procedural track-generation engine, each and every trip is unique. And if you manage to stop hurling your virtual lunch as you ride the rails, you’ll notice that you’re surrounded by beautiful panoramic backdrops. You can also adjust settings to your own ride preferences, tweaking track length, complexity of corkscrews, loops and coaster acceleration among other things.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Ziconic says their upcoming 1.1 version (due the week of 2/23/2009) will include the ability to ride on suspension coasters, lets you adjust your point-of-view, and adds a nighttime backdrop among other things. Unfortunately, there aren’t any plans to take advantage of the iPhone’s accelerometer, so you’re at the whim of the coaster’s own acceleration and virtual gravity. Stupid laws of physics.

You can find SkyCoaster 3D over at the iTunes App Store for just 99 cents.

Remember the good old 3.5-inch floppy disk? Now remember how annoying it was when you had to install a program that spanned 4 or 5 disks? Well, imagine what life would be like if you had to install today’s bloatware on your computer using floppies. That’s exactly what the designers at Antrepo Design Industry envisioned in their new series series of art prints.

I had to do a double-take when I first saw it, but Adobe Photoshop CS4 would take up 358 floppies, and that’s not the full CS4 suite.

And your little lightweight browser, Firefox, all of a sudden wouldn’t seem particularly compact if it shipped on 36 disks.

And while iTunes 8 is no slouch on 46 floppies, the true heavyweight champion in this poster series has to be EA’s SIMS 3, which would take up an unbelievable 1,760 3.5-inch floppies. Or in other words, a stack of floppies that would be over 19-feet tall when piled one on top of another.

My arm hurts just thinking about having to swap disks that many times. If software companies really wanted to prevent piracy, I suppose they could always go back to distributing their programs on floppies. The number of disks you’d have to copy would be more than enough of a deterrent.

If you’re looking for some great art for your computer room, you can grab a set of 4 limited edition, hand-signed digital prints (each one measuring in at a substantial 18.9″ x 26.8″) over at the AntrepoShop for $120 (USD).

I wonder how many floppies it would take to install Metal Gear Solid 4 on my PS3.

[via Behance]

As much as you might love your MacBook or MacBook Pro, there’s no denying that the lack of a numeric keypad can really slow you down if you work with numbers all the time.

Perfect for heavy duty spreadsheet users, this nifty new application for the iPhone and iPod Touch lets you use your mobile device as an ad-hoc numeric keypad for your Mac. Just install Balmuda’s Numberkey connect software onto your Mac, then grab the mobile app from the App Store for $1.99. The two pieces of software communicate via Wi-Fi, adding a familiar 18-key numeric keyboard to your Mac without wires.

Numberkey includes four different skins, including black on white, white on black, old school Mac and a recently added black on silver for new MacBook Pro users. While the lack of tactile feedback might slow you down a little bit, I still think it’s still convenient to have the extra keys.

At this point, Numberkey is a Mac only app, so Windows users need not apply. Now if they could only figure out how to fit the whole MacBook inside the iPhone, I’d be set.

While a few of us are are patiently awaiting the release of Apple’s application SDK for the iPhone and iPod Touch, crafty (and impatient) developers have found ways to run plenty of their own applications on the popular media players.

The latest code hack floating around the Interwebs takes the slick iTunes CoverFlow interface and lets you use it in other applications.

Developer Kevin Brosius has managed to create an application which provides an instance of the CoverFlow interface for use in other applications. Then, in keeping with the spirit of the iPhone dev community, just a few hours later, developer Layton Duncan leveraged the code to troll through the directories on your iPhone and generate an application menu using CoverFlow.

Want to give the code a shot on your jailbroken device? You can grab Kevin’s UICoverFlowLayer code here, or Layton’s application menu binary here.

This just in: Steve Jobs has confirmed that Apple is working on an SDK for the development of native applications on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Straight from the horse’s mouth: “We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users.”

The reason for the delay: “It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task,” Jobs continues, “We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.”

I can’t tell you how excited I am that Apple has made this official. The iPhone is such a powerful device, and the fact that it’s been a closed platform up until now has really limited its potential.
