Any time a week before and a week after April Fools’ Day, when I see something cool that looks like it is too good to be true I always get cautious. There is nothing in the description of the RE35 that screams “I’m a Fake” but the product seems like it’s something that would be very hard, if not impossible to make.

The product claims to be a special film roll that you can cram into an old-school 35mm film camera. It has some sort of pull out sensor film that lays over the lens opening of the camera. When the user presses the film camera shutter button the digital image is captured by the RE35 and stored inside the canister.

The photo is would be stored by flash and then accessed on your computer via a USB cable. The description says you can get the thing in 4MP, 8MP, and 12MP versions and that it will work with Macs and PCs.

Unfortunately, the RE35′s creators have admitted it’s a fake already, so you can’t have one. Even so, it’s a cool concept for sure.

It’s April 1st, so you basically have to assume that everything on the entire Internet is fake, right? Well I decided to take some time to separate the wheat from the chaff for you guys, and have selected some of my favorite April Fools Day pranks floating around the Web today.

Of course we’ve been up to our own April tomfoolery here on Technabob too, but I’ll leave that to you guys to try and find the fake post of the day. It’s pretty obvious, but I still want you guys to find it for yourselves.

We’ve seen a couple of official Minecraft merchandise from ThinkGeek, but this is by far the best one yet – a USB-powered, miniature Nether Portal. It emits a hum that, together with its serene purple glow, is sure to calm you down as soon as you plug it in. Oh and it can also send items to hell.

That’s right folks. Other companies offer cloud storage, but the desktop Nether Portal offers underworld storage. What are the advantages of storing items in the Nether? With cloud storage, you’ll be compelled to store important files to maximize the space, but the Nether’s hostile environment is also the perfect place to destroy or banish actual objects! It goes without saying that you have to be careful using the portal’s capabilities.

I hope someone else in their office has a Nether Portal.

BREAKING: In a surprise move, rivals Apple and Microsoft put aside their petty differences, and today announced a new handheld gaming platform, combining the best of the iPad and Xbox 360 systems. The xPad 360 tablet will build on the core hardware of the iPad 2, but with an enhanced processor and graphics capabilities.

Leveraging major improvements in component miniaturization, the new xPad 360 tablet will be able to run all existing Xbox 360 games, plus games downloaded from the iTunes store. You’ll also be able to use Microsoft Points to purchase games from the iTunes store, however, due to Apple’s 70/30 revenue split, they’re only worth 70 cents on the dollar. (So 800 Microsoft Points will buy you $7.00 worth of games from the App Store). And while Microsoft has killed Zune hardware development, there’s word that the device will support both iTunes and the Zune Marketplace. And of course, there will be support for Xbox Live and the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The specially upgraded iPad hardware will have built-in dual analog sticks, a D-pad and controller buttons, so you won’t have to use the touchscreen for Xbox 360 games. I can’t tell from the pictures where the shoulder buttons will go – maybe those will be replaced with on-screen controls. They also plan on including a slot-loading DVD drive for your existing game collection. The drive will add a little weight and thickness to the tablet, but they claim battery life will actually be even better than the stock iPad 2 thanks to advances in Lithium-ion technology. And with a built-in microphone and speakers, it’ll be easy to play online games with voice chat.

Apple and Microsoft haven’t announced pricing or a release date for the xPad 360 yet, but when we know, you’ll be the first to know. Oh, and one more thing…

Sure, you’ve played the Wii, the PS3 and the Xbox 360, but now your favorite feline friend can get into the action thanks to the latest in video gaming technology — the CatBox 360.

Each time kitty steps into the automatic litter box, a new game is activated and a random music track starts to play. Colored indicators scroll down the flip-out LCD screen much like they do in a game of Guitar Hero or Rock Band. As each paw scratches across the litter, it triggers the notes, and every time your cat leaves a “present” in the litter box, the game enters a bonus multiplier mode for extra points.

The system includes such cat-friendly tunes as Cat Scratch Fever, Stray Cat Strut, and of course, Cool for Cats.

The makers of the CatBox, Pawsitivity Games, say they’ve tested the device with hundreds of cats. With time, most of them do start to scratch to the rhythm of the music. An unfortunate side effect, however, is that a handful of cats have started “doing their business” any time they hear music playing — so beware when you crank up your stereo — you might get an unexpected surprise. Hopefully, they’ll work out this minor kink before the CatBox hits the market.

Pawsitivity hasn’t announced a release date or price for the system yet, but my cat can’t wait to get his paws on one.
