If you are looking for a new tablet that runs the Android operating system, and the thought of the Kindle Fire with its missing full Android Market access isn’t appealing, this might do the trick for you. Archos has announced a new tablet called the Archos 70b Internet Tablet. The new tablet retails for just $199(USD) and has full support for Android Market.

The 70b is an upgrade to the earlier Archos 70 tablet, adding Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and increasing the RAM to 512MB. The extra RAM will allow the machine to run faster and be smoother in use and navigation of menus. It’s also supposed to have an improved capacitive touch screen, with its resolution bumped up to 1024×600 from 800×480. In addition, the CPU has been sped up from 1.0 GHz to 1.2GHz, while flash storage remains at 8GB.

Other features include accelerated 3D graphics, Wi-Fi, HDMI output and a microSD card slot for expansion. The tablet will hit stores in January. What do you think? Does this sound like a better option than the somewhat gimped Kindle Fire to you?

Archos has been making media players for years and years. The company has recently been dabbling in the Android tablet market too, and has a couple cool looking devices that are coming soon. The tablets are the Archos G9 80 and G9 101.

The main difference between the two tablets is that the G9 101 has a 10.1-inch (1280×800) screen and the G9 80 has an 8-inch (1024×768) screen. Both run Android Honeycomb 3.2 and both have a speedy 1.5GHz ARM Cortex dual-core processor inside. A cheaper 8GB 8-inch version will offer a 1.0GHz CPU. All models will offer 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity, as well as a 720p capable front-facing video camera, and HDMI video output.

Each of the tablets will come in two flavors. One version has 16GB of flash memory, while the other has a hefty 250GB hard drive inside for storage. Incredibly, the hard drive version will only be 3mm thicker than the version with flash storage. The 80 G9 16GB version will sell for $329 with a 1.5GHz CPU, the 250GB version is $369, the 101 at 1.5GHz is $399 and the 101 G9 with 250GB it’s $469. The lone 1GHz version will be an 8GB Archos 80 G9, and will sell for $299. These tablets should all be available sometime this October.

Hey did you hear the news? You know that chap Will Rockwell? The eccentric gentleman from America, whose house might as well be a factory for all the dreadful clanging and hissing and sparks and smoke coming out from any and every hole, you’d think he was fashioning a personal steamship – but I digress. The man emerged from his laboratory or workshop or mad house, whatever you wish to call it, with a wondrous contraption that he calls the Pocket Music Library. We could hardly believe our eyes and ears – okay yeah it’s an MP3 player. Already says so in the title.

Inside this shiny case is an Archos Vision – an mp3 player that’s also an FM radio, video player, voice recorder and flash drive – although Rockwell didn’t say which specific model or what its data capacity is. He didn’t actually mod the Archos Vision, just placed it in a very well-made case. I think the only functional parts of the front cover are the buttons, which as you may have guessed control the device encased within. Rockwell says the case can be easily opened to remove the MP3 player when you need to charge or connect it to a computer.

You can order the Pocket Music Library from Will Rockwell’s Etsy shop for $350 (USD). Yeah it’s pretty expensive, even when you take the bundled headphones, USB connector and fancy tin case into account. That being said, it is a one-of-a-kind device. The fact that the case and player are separate means you can easily replace the latter if it ever breaks, so that adds to the longevity of the case. Still, for that price I’d expect the gauges to work.

In anticipation of the upcoming 2008 CES show, Archos has revealed complete specs and images for their highly-anticipated media hub, the Archos TV+. The compact device may be about the same size as an Apple TV, but it packs in a number of additional features.

For starters, the Archos comes with double the storage for less cost than Apple’s set top boxes. The TV+ also supports recording of content from analog video devices (note the component, S-video and composite inputs on the back panel), and acts as a full DVR, complete with a TV program guide. Just like it’s competition, the device only handles standard-def content, meaning that you’ll be able to store a whopping 700 hours of video on on the larger model.

In addition to its media recording an playback capabilities, the Archos TV+ can surf the web using an optional Opera browser with Flash capability. It can even read PDF files if the mood strikes you. There’s also access to the Archos Content Portal which allows for digital downloads and streaming of new content to the box. Network connectivity is provided via built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet port. I particularly like the provided QWERTY remote control, which should make web surfing and navigation a breeze compared to normal remotes.

The 80GB version of the TV+ will retail for $249, while the 250GB model will run $349. Expect to see the Archos TV+ hit stores sometime this later this year. You can check out the detailed product specs here.

Archos today revealed their new 5th generation personal media players, and it looks like a really strong collection. With models starting out at as little as $90 and ranging up to $300 and more, there’s a little something for everyone. I’m especially excited about the higher-end models, which feature large screens, huge hard drives, Wi-Fi streaming and even direct-to-device movie downloads.

For starters, there’s the entry-level Archos 105, which offers a small 1.8-inch OLED display and 2GB of flash memory. While the screen is quite small, you can’t beat the price at just $90. Moving up the ladder, the Archos 405 ($170) adds a larger 3.5-inch LCD screen and and SD slot for adding memory.

But the real heavy-hitters come in the form of the Archos 605 and 705 models which offer wireless connectivity to your PC for streaming video, as well as online access to CinemaNow to download content directly to the players WITHOUT a PC. An optional upgrade ($30) will provide web surfing and Flash-based video playback using the Opera web browser.

The 605 Wi-Fi will come with a 4.3-inch screen with an ultra-sharp 800×480 resolution, while the 705 Wi-Fi will offer a huge 7-inch display (resolution unknown.) The 605 comes in 4GB flash ($230), 30GB hard disk ($300), and 160GB hard disk ($400) variants. The 705 will offer 80GB and 160GB hard drives (no prices announced yet.) These higher end models are even expected to support 720p high definition content (for an extra $20). For $100 more, you’ll be able to purchase a DVR dock which will allow you to record your favorite television programs directly to your Archos device. It seems to me like a lot of features will come a la carte, but once fully-loaded, these players will really pack a serious punch.

All four models are expected to hit stores this September.
