Space Ark: Everything Cool About Old Arcade Games [Xbla]

What’s both retro and thoroughly modern? Space Ark, a forthcoming XBLA title designed as a tribute to some of the colorful, crazy games that once dominated arcades.

Take a little Breakout, a little Rainbow Islands for style, give it a coat of gloss, and voila! Perfect for the Xbox 360′s downloadable games service. Developer Strawdog Studios is also responsible for the crossplatform puzzler Geon, which is a mark in Space Ark’s favor.

Pricing and release info–all the important stuff, you know–is still up in the air, but no one seems shy about showing Space Ark off. With the popularity of downloadable puzzle games, this one’s probably in the bag as a success.

Arkanoid Cross Stitch More Fun Than Actually Playing Arkanoid

Do you remember the classic video game Arkanoid? Some people do, and rather fondly, as evidenced by this elaborate cross stitched homage to it.

I’m not sure what’s up with the Philip K. Dick quote on there but I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. Artist Eunice Szpillman was asked to do the artwork for the Spanish video game mag SuperJuegos Xtreme. She documented the process with her iPhone camera.

Me, I always found Arkanoid a little boring. I mean, it’s essentially Pong with a couple more colors and an annoying high-pitched song. If you’re feeling pangs of rose-colored nostalgia about it, play a round or two and I bet you’ll agree with me.

Arkanoid for Nintendo Ds Gets Paddle Controller

The classic arcade paddle-ball game Arkanoid is getting updated for the Nintendo DS, and comes with a special bonus. Since the game would be virtually unplayable without the old paddle (potentiometer) control, Taito is including one.

The controller plugs into the GBA slot on the bottom of the DS or DS-Lite, and will come in four colors to match the various DS-Lite colors.

Arkanoid was always one of my arcade favorites back in the day, so I’m glad to see that Taito plans on finally giving it some justice with the inclusion of a proper controller.
