Designed by Benjamin Redford and the OllyFactory (get it?). Olly and Molly are USB-connected, Arduino-powered gadgets which notify you when you have a new message by letting you follow your nose or taste buds. Olly is the smelly one of the pair – and can be filled with a scented oil of your choice – and then emit an aroma as a notification. You can even stack up multiple Ollies so you can have different digital events trigger different smells.

Molly isn’t stinky at all. This little bot holds onto some little candies, and drops one into its little bin whenever your tweets gets retweeted a pre-set number of times. Though it doesn’t look like it can hold too many candies – which is good if you get a lot of retweets. You wouldn’t want to start gaining weight from Twitter now? That’s all we need now.

Both Olly and Molly are raising funds now over on Kickstarter – and they still have a ways to go if you’d like one. The fundraising ends on Feb. 10, and still needs to raise another $27,000 of its $35,000 goal. A pledge of $50 or more gets you an Olly, and $55 or more gets you a Molly. Higher pledges will result in various combos of Ollies and Mollies, as well as the ability to customize the look of yours.

The SMELLIT (yes, that is seriously it’s name) is a new gadget from French company Olf-action (as in “olefaction”, get it?) and it’s designed to add “the smell dimension” to various forms of digital entertainment. And given the face that Olf-action already makes a smell-syncronization system for movie theaters called Odoravision, there’s a good chance this is going to be made into an actual product you can buy someday.

It’s certainly more stylish than the ScentScape device, but to be fair, they’re device was only a prototype when I saw it. They don’t say much about how it works, or what sort of smells it will emit, but from the picture of Kratos below, I can only imagine that they plan on offering the scents of body odor, blood and maybe death.

I’m guessing they’ll also offer more pleasant aromas like flowers, food and the ocean for other experiences. Here’s a list of fragrance cartridges they offer for their other systems I found up on their site (translated). My favorites have to be “Smell naked body” and “Bad smells”:

A company could make a whole line of products based on this gimmick alone. Why stop at gummi bears? What about fried chicken scented earbuds, coffee scented earbuds or bacon scented earbuds? We can do this all day.

You can buy the Gummi Bear Scented Earbuds from Fred Flare for $18 (USD). I wonder how long the scent lasts. I wonder if it blends well with sweat.

With an expected retail price of $69.99 (USD), ScentSciences‘ ScentScape device is a compact plug-and-play USB device which can be synchronized with your content, outputting scents along the way. The compact gadget can be loaded up with a cartridge containing 20 scents like forest, ocean, flowers, a Christmas tree, or even chocolate. Using their ScentEditor software ($19.99) you can load in a video clip, and then attach scents to cue points in the video.

ScentSciences was showing off a demo unit at CES this past week, and was they played a video, a cinnamon roll came on screen, and seconds later, the booth filled with the aroma of freshly baked cinnamon. I recorded a brief video clip, and then realized that it doesn’t really work without the smells. So before you hit the play button, grab a jar of cinnamon from your pantry and wave it under your nose about 15 seconds in.

Makes perfect sense scents, right? In addition to a stock set of 20 scents, they plan on producing custom scent cartridges for specific purposes, like if a game developer or movie studio wanted to enhance a specific movie. All I can think of is a Blu-ray edition of Polyester, in digital Odorama instead of using scratch-and-sniff cards. Delightful.

ScentScape envisions using the system to enhance games, movies, and personal content to leverage yet one more sense in addition to sight and sound. ScentScape is currently offering a software development kit (SDK), including a ScentScape player unit, a scent cartridge good for approximately 200 hours of use, demo software, and drivers for you to create your own artificially-scented applications. The SDK sells for $495 (USD), and individual consumer units will sell for around $70.

The whole concept is definitely odd, but I have hand it to the ScentSciences guys for having something that stood out from all the Android tablets, 3D TVs, and junk from China littering the aisles at CES – even if it does smell a little bit.

Scientist Tajuki Narumi and a team from the University of Tokyo created this unusual contraption called the “Meta Cookie“. The device combines augmented reality software with a camera and head-mounted display to project a simulated image of the cookie of your choice onto a host cookie (for texture). Then, air pumps blow the aroma of a specified cookie directly into your nostrils, convincing your brain that you’re eating a totally different cookie. The video clip below doesn’t really do the technology justice, but you get the point, right?

The second time it emits a stench of some sort. Being that it’s called Pepper Mouth, it’s supposed smell like a spicy pepper. That won’t stop some folks from cursing; peppers may remind them of home cooking or something (or getting arrested). The smell lingers too, sort of like farts after a day of beer drinking. Sounds great.

The LTK-2000 Therapy Station starts out with 24 relaxing sounds in categories ranging from “concentration” to “therapy for depression” to get your mind off the din of your everyday life. Once your ears are soothed, a ring of bright blue LEDs pops out of the device to provide your eyes with a up to 5,000 lux of light therapy.

Once your eyes and ears are relaxed, your nose won’t feel left out, thanks to an array of herbal aroma cartridges which can pop into the top of the unit. If that’s not enough, the system also has a built in anion generator, which is supposed to help purify the air you’re breathing.

If this thing can’t help you to relax, you’re probably beyond hope. Now all you’ve got to do is figure out how to get one imported from Korea, and you’re all set. If you’re up for the challenge, you can find them for sale at Enfren for 378,000 KRW (that’s about $395 USD). There’s also a video of the device in action over on AVING.

As if smelly colognes and incense weren’t bad enough, now we have to worry about odoriferous computers. This USB fragrance oil burner takes little droplets of aromatic oils and heats them enough to really stink up the place. USBGeek has ‘em for $7 each, including a dropper of either of the aforementioned scents.

By the way, if anyone in my office decides to get one of these, I might just have to take your laptop and throw it in the dumpster outside. Let’s see if how good it smells then.

According to the device’s maker, e-Revolution, the Deodolight is designed to eliminate (or at least cover up) “ill-smelling” aromas while it slowly fades between an array of colors. Replaceable cartridges for the light comes in grapefruit, forest or unscented versions.

I am bummed that there’s no “new car” smell available though.

The AromaUSB plugs into your USB port and emits rose, lavender or jasmine fragrance to ensure that your laptop smells just like your grandmother’s living room.

The SO703i Sony Bravia Aroma Phone will offer a variety of interchangeable aroma “sheets” that will keep your phone smelling fresh as the day you bought it. We can only hope they don’t base their scent selection on the old Odorama scratch-and-sniff cards from John Water’s classic Polyester, which included such lovely aromas as gasoline, pizza, glue, grass, and poo.
