Trying to fit different-sized plugs into a wall socket can be a pain in the ass. The designers at Art Lebedev studio already came up with a socket that pops out of the wall to reveal extra sockets when needed, but they also have this much simpler solution – a wall socket filled with holes.

The Rozetkus Wall is designed for plugging in low-power devices, the ones that don’t need a third prong for grounding. The abundance of female contacts – the holes – means you can arrange several plugs that may not fit at the same time on conventional wall sockets.

The female contacts are backlit by an LED panel to make the socket easier to spot in the dark.

If you find the design of the Rozetkus Wall familiar, it’s because it’s based on one of the studio’s earlier products, the Rozetkus power strip. If you’re wondering why both Rozetkuses (Rozetki?) have an odd number of female contacts when all plugs have two male contacts, I got no answer for you.

Obviously, this thing wouldn’t work in the U.S., where outlets have straight prongs instead of pins, and building code requires that all wall outlets must offer ground plugs – even if the devices themselves use just 2 prongs.

Anyone waiting for Art Lebedev’s updated keyboards to come out, I’ve got some good news. Lebedev today started taking pre-orders for the sexy new versions of his colorful, programmable keyboards.

First up is the Optimus Popularis, a compact keyboard with everything but numeric keys. The Popularis is one awesome looking keyboard, with each key offering full programmability, and a tiny, full color screen.

Each key is made up of a 64×64 pixel grid, which can support 262,144 unique colors, and a frame rate of 10fps. That’s right, you can display animation on these keys! Each one can be set up with custom images for different languages, or special keys to launch specific applications or functions when switching applications. Lebedev says it’s “A million keyboards in one,” and he’s totally spot on. Here are just a few sample configurations:

One thing to note is that the keys this time are made using a backlit LCD screen instead of individual OLED screens, which seems like a better approach these days. Though it’s not clear if each key has it’s own individual LCD panel or if there’s just one large LCD behind the keyboard, and the area between the keys acts as a mask. Either way, it still looks awesome. I also love how the new keys are more like those rounded keys found on a Mac keyboard, which is more what I’m used to these days anyhow.

A quick glance reveals a fully customizable display bar between the function keys and the main keyboard, which can be used to display pertinent info like what track you’re listening to, or how many emails you have waiting.

Programming is accomplished with a sophisticated configuration app included with the keyboards – and it’s compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 8 and Mac OS 10.5.1 or higher too.

So now that you’ve wiped the drool off of your current keyboard… the pricetag. The Optimus Popularis isn’t cheap. The pre-order price is 31,500 rubles, which works out to be about $1086 (USD) or 747 (EUR) at today’s exchange rates. Pricey, but sexy as all get out. If that’s too rich for your blood, and you still love the concept, check out the Optimus Mini Six add-on keyboard instead:

The Mini Six is exactly what it sounds like – a small external keyboard with six programmable LCD keys on it. It supports the same programmability, and animation capabilities of the full-size keyboard – though it only can handle 65,536 colors. The Mini Six is selling for for 10,900 Rubles, or about $376(USD) or $258 (EUR). Both the Popularis and Mini Six are built from aluminum and plastic components, and have a nice slim profile.

Art Lebedev Studio started to take pre-orders for both the Optimus Popularis and Optimus Mini Six today, with the Popularis shipping June 1, 2012, and the Mini Six not shipping until November 1, 2012. But there is an advantage to that long pre-order wait, as the retail prices will be more than 30% higher once released. Yeouch! Lebedev, does plan on showing off the prototypes at the 2012 CES show next month. I definitely plan on stopping by their booth to see these awesome looking things up close and personal.

Art Lebedev Studio has become famous for their thematic designs, often mimicking other objects or exaggerating an object’s characteristic in practical ways. Well, mostly. Their new concept watch isn’t as humorous or striking as their other designs, but it’s still noteworthy. Also noteworthy is the apparent boredom that led to the creation of the watch. According to its product page, the point of creating the Integralus was “to bring an idea to life.”

I wish they’d brought the Machine Gun Jetpack to life instead. But enough about my desires. The main design concept with the Integralus is that its watch face also serves as its enclosure, which you’ll love if you hate gaps in your watch straps. As you can see the watch face splits into two when unlocked. The Integralus will still display the time and date even when in this state because each half has its own battery.

Aside from a cleaner, more minimal look, the design of the Integralus also makes it easier to wear the watch. I’m guessing the strap is made of a flexible material so it can further accommodate a wide range of wrist sizes. The studio hasn’t mentioned yet if they’ll turn the Integralus into a real product, but if they come through with stuff like these, they certainly could make the Integralus real.

Art Lebedev is harnessing the power of the pig with their new power strip concept. The Svintus Power Strip Pig concept makes a lot of sense as it doesn’t take up a lot of space, yet gives you many outlets to plug your gadgets into.

You get 17 snout-shaped outlets in all, and it even has a built-in circuit breaker to protect your devices. Sadly you can’t buy it right now though since it is just a concept, but this is one that I’d like to see become a reality. It’s perfect to sit in any corner where you have a bunch of equipment, without taking up a ton of space.

If it ever does become a reality, we will of course let you know and keep you posted.

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of Space Invaders-themed stuff.
And another thing I really wouldn’t mind having?

This deck of playing cards from Art Lebedev Studios is made with a distinct Space Invaders theme. Instead of the usual Jokers and Kings and Queens, you get to throw out alien Aces to trump them all. The suite of each card is printed on it as well, below the letters or numbers indicating the card’s identity (I don’t how else to call them, but you know what I mean.)

The latest concept design from Art Lebedev Studio is an unusual one. If the Art Lebedev Studio sounds familiar, you probably recognize the name as the people that teased us with lots of cool looking OLED keyboards for years. The latest project from the design house is called Flashkus.

What you are looking at is a block of four cardboard disposable flash drives that have different amounts of storage on them. You just rip one off when you need to store data or share data with someone and they can slip them into a USB port to read the data. You could also write directly on the cardboard drive to label their contents.

The only downside I see is that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to use a 16GB flash drive only once. I would assume the design would be robust enough to allow for multiple uses, but who knows.

The other rub is that the outer shell of most flash drives isn’t where much of the cost comes in, it’s the actual NAND inside, which would cost the same in the Flashkus. These would have to be much cheaper than a normal flash drive to make sense.

Woot! Art Lebedev Studios has just posted this image of their soon-to-be-real follow up to their incredibly cool (but pricey) Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard, and it looks spectacular.

The new Optimus Popularis keyboard design features higher resolution keys than the previous model, and will sell for “less than $1000″, which is about $600 bucks less than the Maximus. Each key features a 64×64 pixel programmable display, and rounded-corner keys that are more what you’d expect on a new computer compared to the old model. In addition to the programmable keys, there’s a nifty full-color display which can show widgets via your computer’s USB connection.

Now according to Lebedev, they’re not using OLED this time, but it’s unclear what the display tech will be. Whatever it is, it looks cool. I can’t wait to get my hands on this bad boy when it hits stores early in 2011. Pre-orders start later this year.

Check out the full-size image, and more details over at Lebedev’s blog.

I am not a big fan of hot drinks. Usually I will drink a cup of hot chocolate around the holidays, but otherwise I stick to nice, cold Diet Dr. Pepper. The wife, on the other hand doesn’t function until she has a few cups of coffee in her.

She gets really grumpy if her coffee gets cold and she chugs a mouthful of the tepid brew. She needs this mug from the Art Lebedev Studio. You probably recognize the name from the much cooler products the design firm usually offers like the Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard.

This coffee cup has a battery outline on it that has a green temperature indicator. The temp gauge shows when a liquid inside is more than 96.8F. The fuller the cup, the higher the gauge goes. This might be a good thing, especially in my household. I could look at the cup from a distance and if the gauge were not showing, I would know not to talk to my wife for a while.

When I first saw the Reflectius Clock by Art Lebedev, I thought that it was simply using reflections, but that’s not the whole story. This wild concept clock uses 60 mirrors and a single laser to display the time.

The mirrors rotate so that the single laser beam is reflected at precise angles so that it draws the digits on the face of the clock. Kind of amazing, isn’t it? That’s not all. The whole case of the clock has these crazy geometric angles, which totally makes it stand out among other timepieces.

Head on over to Lebedev’s website to see a Flash animation of the Reflectius in action. I really hope they figure out a way to produce these. I want one on my desk.

When I was a kid, my grandmother had this matchstick plaque hanging in her kitchen. I looked at the thing for a while once trying to figure out what exactly it said. As it turns out the thing said “Jesus” you just had to look really hard to see the word in with the pattern the matchsticks made. This new clock from Art Lebedev Studios reminds me of that plaque.

The thing is a bit of an oxymoron in that it is an analog digital clock with hands that shows numbers like a digital clock from the 1970s. The little hands are a marvel as they move to make each number, watching the seconds tick by with the hands moving in unison is very cool.

I will say that the numbers a hard to read for my eyes. Segmentus appears to be a concept device right now and it is shown in black with white arms and clear with black arms. I could certainly see hanging this thing on my wall; it would fit perfectly in the futuristic but old-fashioned world on Caprica.

Art Lebedev’s Punctirus bracelet or necklace sure look interesting. I have to say that this little combo looks quite fetching – especially if you’re into severed limbs.

It’s true that cutting & pasting have become ubiquitous with computing. In fact, I’ve got CTRL+X and CTRL+V programmed into the buttons of my mouse.

Art Lebedev‘s page is sparse with any details about this jewelry but my guess is that it’s going to be made at some point. The design is only two weeks old, so give it some time if you really want one of these.

Art Lebedev’s latest concept design is a digital camera with a flexible tube, allowing you to take pictures around corners.

The tube of the Fleksimus is flexible and is fitted with a lens on one end, while the other goes into a compact viewfinder or a 3-inch color display. Art Lebedev really bore this camera down to its essential features, allowing it be used very simply.

The camera itself allows you to capture either video or pictures, and will enable you to take your photography to a whole new level. No specs are given, but it will allow people to take photos at whole new angles.

Now it isn’t only peeping toms that will benefit, but getting that sweet spot in the right angle has always been challenging with a traditional camera. Since you can just look at the viewfinder and orient the tube the right way, it should be a lot easier with the aptly named Fleksimus.

When I first saw this gadget’s name I instantly wished that it referred to an industrious monster instead. Wouldn’t you rather hire a hardworking Yeti than buy a magnetic board with a clock on it? But actually the TaskWatch isn’t so bad. It’s a magnetic white board (Appx. 35″ w x 24″ h)with a clock on it: simple and practical. The clock is in the middle of the white board, so it’s perfect for planning your day. It comes in two versions, one with a whole clock face:

and one that only shows (normal) office hours:

You can order the TaskWatch at Art Lebedev Studio’s online store for approx. $240 (USD). If you ask me I think they should make a third version which has removable/readjustable hour- and minute markers, so if your office or project hours are erratic or not the usual 9-6 you can adjust the clock accordingly. And if you ask me one more time, I still want to work with a diligent Bigfoot.

These clever Dosogus 2.0 pillows by designers at Art Lebedev Studio are embroidered with a directory listing from everyone’s favorite command line operating system – DOS.

All your old favorites are there, including AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. But if you look carefully, there are directories for WINDOWS and a HIBERFIL.SYS file, so this pillow must actually be running Windows XP or a newer version. And watch out for the PRON directory – you never know what’s hiding in there. The pillow also appears to have been infected with a trojan, so you might not want to actually sit your butt on this pillow.

The Dosogus 2.0 is actually an upgrade of Lebedev’s earlier Dosogus pillow, and I have to say the new model crashes a little less frequently than the original. Want one? Head on over to Lebedev’s online shop.

Unless of course you love working, or you’re OC and desperate to find a way of positioning the food on a grill systematically. If so, I think you’ll have to make one yourself, because according to the studio’s website, the release date for the Gridus was last April 1. I guess you can beg Art Lebedev and his team to turn this prank into a real product. Or not.

So what do you get when you put your remote control in the taffy-pulling machine from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? This crazy design from Russia’s Art Lebedev Studios was an attempt to include as many channels as possible on a single remote, without a need to press multiple buttons.

The Pultius TV remote control has 99 individual channel buttons along with 3 buttons for adding 100, 200 or 300 to the number. This design provides direct access to 399 unique channels with just two button presses. While the idea sounds useful on paper, the 20-inch long remote “baton” is just plain goofy. With services like DirecTV having channel numbers that go well into the 800s, the remote would need even more buttons. On the other hand, you’ll never lose this remote under the couch cushion.

This is just the sort of whimsy you’d expect from the guy who brought us the $1600 semi-vaporware light up keyboard.
