A company called Planetary Resources has made itself known, stating that they want to mine asteroids for natural resources. This of course raises a few questions: how exactly will they accomplish this task? What are the risks involved in space mining? Will it have any harmful effects? And most importantly, why is the company not called Asteroidal Resources?

Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer to any of those questions. But the company’s introductory video does vaguely indicate the steps that Planetary Resources is planning to take to achieve their plan and the benefits of mining asteroids. Not that we’ll understand if it explained everything in detail. I bet it’s a bit more complicated than pressing L2 to scan and then R2 to launch a probe.

It does seem to make sense to mine asteroids. Unless of course someone out there is using them. In which case… we’ll still mine them if we can get away with it. That’s what humans do! If we’re caught, let’s just say we’re increasing our galactic readiness. <del>Watch Armageddon</del> Check out Planetary Resources’ website for more information.

Thankfully, that’s not your only recourse, especially if you love retro gaming. These Blik Asteroids Wall Stickers will quickly turn your pad into a giant Atari game.

These stickers are actually officially licensed by Atari, and they are movable as well as reusable because they are made out Blik’s Re-Stik material. They’d look great in your game room, home theater room, or dorm room.

Each set of the stickers contains 65 movable decals, enough for many spaceships, asteroids, saucers, and scores. There’s even one for the 1979 Atari copyright message. Cool. Blik Asteroids Wall Stickers are available for $45 from Amazon.

I can’t think of a more delicious way to spend an afternoon in the kitchen than making a batch of these most excellent Asteroids cookies.

The guys at Evil Mad Scientist Labs have managed to faithfully reproduce almost every component of the arcade original in yummy cookie form, including tiny spaceships, asteroids of all sizes, a flying saucer, and even little bullets from your ship. About the only thing missing is an edible high score.

The recipe for these vector graphic cookies uses a chocolate graham cracker base and delicately piped on royal icing. But there’s nothing to stop you from making gingerbread or chocolate chip asteroids too. Although I’d personally like to figure out how to make truly black asteroids.

EMSL was kind enough to share the DIY recipe for making your own Asteroids cookies, so what are you waiting for?

Atari fans rejoice! The Atari.com website has just gotten a facelift, and one of the great new features of the site is an arcade with a number of classic Atari game for you to play in your web browser.

So far, the Atari Arcade includes web-playable Flash versions of four arcade classics: Asteroids, Battlezone, Crystal Castles, and Lunar Lander. Hopefully, they’ll add more games in the not-too-distant future. I want my Dig-Dug and Paperboy! They’ve also thrown in versions of a couple of classic 2600 games, Yar’s Revenge and Adventure. Each of the games is a faithful recreation of the original, with the addition of a global high score leaderboard.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to the new Atari Arcade, and play without fear of ever running out of quarters again.

Really, how can you not love a game with instructions that read: “The primary objective of the game is to break a path through the shield, and destroy the Qotile with a blast from the Zorlon Cannon”?

Have you ever loaded up a retro arcade game with MAME, only to be greeted with an error message about those bad ROMs you downloaded 2 years ago? Well one enterprising developer decided to take that idea and actually turn it into a game.

The chaos that ensues in ROM CHECK FAIL! is one that really needs to be seen to be understood, but basically, the virtual arcade machine starts out with a failed startup sequence, and proceeds to land you in a warped 8-bit game mashup, where worlds continuously collide.

One second, you’re controlling Mario as he navigates the Mushroom Kingdom, and the next minute Pac-Man is getting killed by tumbling Asteroids. To give you a better idea of the mayhem, here’s a video clip of the game in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

This is truly a must-try for anyone who loves retro gaming. You can grab both Windows and Linux installers for ROM CHECK FAIL! over at Farbs.org. See if you can spot all of the different classic games that are packed into this crazy thing.

[thanks for the tip, John!]

These retro video gamer ties are perfect for making a statement when you don’t want to wear the boring old blue tie that you’ve got sitting in your dresser drawer. Wild Ties makes these neckties in Tetris, Pong, Space Invaders or Asteroids versions so you’re covered whether you’re looking for something colorful, or would rather go with something more minimal and monochromatic.

All four retro game ties are available over on Amazon for $24.95 (USD) each.
Each lamp is comprised of 24 facets, each slightly different in size and shape – which makes them look really cool when placed in multiples and set on different sides. They measure about 12″ in diameter and about 11.5″ high and their unique design allows them to be used as a floor or table lamp, or even hung from the ceiling as a pendant (with an optional kit).

Designer Koray Ozgen of UK lighting maker Innermost initially created a hand-blown glass version of the Asteroid lamp, but realized that a durable plastic model would be ideal for use indoors our out.

Until recently, the lamps were only available in the UK, but U.S. based DesignPublic has just started to carry the fixtures for $176 each. (damn, that’s a whole lotta quarters that I’ll need to save up!)

Designer C. Macintosh (“Mac”) Morrison plans on creating a limited run of these tables (probably no more than 50 of them) for release sometime this Summer or Autumn. In addition to the Asteroids (aka “Storm”) design, Mac is working on a Space Invaders (aka “Invasion”) table as well.

The images shown above are early concept versions, and will likely change in the final production pieces. There’s no word on pricing yet, but I’ll post back with more details when I’ve got some.
