Star Wars AT-AT Vinyl Record Clock: The Empire Needs a Turntable

The Empire’s AT-ATs are wondrous, and that’s probably why I’ve seen them represented in so many different ways. This Star Wars AT-AT Vinyl Record Clock mashes up old vinyl records and AT-ATs for an awesome combination.

The clock is made by hand by the Etsy store owner NotByLaser. It works on a wall or on your desk. The design was inspired by the creator’s first box of records. Each of the handmade designs is custom-made, including the label color, style, and genre of the record. The design can also be flipped 180 degrees if you need that for the proper Feng Shui.

The Star Wars AT-AT clock sells for $39 on Etsy. If that’s not to your liking, he’s got other incredible clocks, like this Dali melting vinyl clock.

AT-AT Wire Sculpture: Get Bent on Hoth

The AT-AT Imperial Walker is one of the most iconic machines in the history of motion pictures, so whenever I spy some object made in the form of the classic robot camel from The Empire Strikes Back, it piques my curiosity. I’m especially happy to have stumbled onto this AT-AT interpretation, done up using carefully bent wire.

Artist Jakobi created this AT-AT sculpture by meticulously bending lengths of galvanized steel and stainless steel wire. He says it’s one of the more complex wire sculptures he’s ever created, and it definitely looks like it was challenging to get the shapes just right.

The sculpture measures about 12″ long by 10″ tall by 4.5″ wide, and would look great in an Star Wars collection. You can find it over on Etsy for $120 (USD). He’s also got a little AT-ST sculpture available for $70 if you prefer your walkers with two legs.

AT-AT PC Casemod is Cooler Than Hoth

I was just watching that Family Guy episode where they referred to Imperial Walkers as “robot camels,” and they are so right. Not that it makes AT-ATs any less cool – especially when the AT-AT in question is actually a computer.

Modder Asphiax has put together this Imperial Walker PC using one of those giant Hasbro AT-ATs as the starting point. Instead of Imperial troops, the AT-AT PC has a Zotax Z68 Mini ITX mobo inside with an Intel Core i7-2600K CPU, a Sapphire 6870 GPU and 8GB of RAM.

The system is cooled by Koolance 370 CPU and mosfet waterblocks along with a Heatkiller NB/SB waterblock, and XSPC pump, 2 x 240 radiators, 4 x 120mm Enermax Fans, and controlled by a Scythe Mediabay. Boy, that sounds more complex than the insides of an actual AT-AT. Then again, they probably didn’t need much cooling on Hoth.

It also has a USB powered Arduino which controls a pair of red lasers installed in its head-cannons. Cool.

AT-AT Cat Condo Begs to Be Taken Down by a Ball of String

I’m not sure how many cats are Star Wars fans, but if your cat loves the movies, I bet he/she wishes that this was in their living room. Just look at that thing. It was made for cats to play in, but I want to play in it too.

Billy Appletini is that kind of friend. One of his friends is a Star Wars fan who has two cats, so he made this for them. That’s going way beyond the call of duty and makes Billy an amazingly awesome guy. It took him about a month to build it. And yes it is appropriately called a CAT-AT.

On the inside you’ll find some fake mounted bird heads and a little mini bar. These cats have it all now. I can’t wait for them to bat a ball of yarn around it’s legs and take this CAT-AT down.

AT-AT Cake: Hothy Birthday to You!

This AT-AT Cake was made by a loving mom for a four year old girl named Gabriel, and the outcome of all of this motherly love is an intergalactic win. The death machine we refer to as the Imperial Walker is stomping between what appears to be two giant snowballs, but they could also be the dome homes of Hoth citizens to cowardly to face their doom with rifles in their hands.

This is almost like a “too-soon” joke that just creates awkward tension. You invite a couple of the old Rebel veterans over to your daughter’s birthday party, and what do they see? An AT-AT modeled after those which blew up everything in the war against the empire. You’re going to have a lot of cleanup to do after they all go into battle mode and start tearing apart your cake with their sidearms, not to mention all of the complaints from the neighbors. I’LL PLAY THE EMPIRE THEME AS LOUD AS I WANT TO, FLANDERS.

If you love this AT-AT Cake, chances are, you’ll love The Other AT-AT Cake and the Death Star Cake, which was also made in bad taste. Those people who floated through space for years after the destruction of Alderaan are disgusted at your shamelessness, and are retracting their gift of fruit salad. And Alderaanian fruit salad? SO GOOD.

Volkswagen Microbus Meets AT-AT: Camper Van Hothoven

In 2011, Volkswagen had the best Super Bowl commercial, featuring a diminutive Darth Vader. This year’s commercial was fun, but it didn’t have the Star Wars tie-in as its main theme. Maybe this what Volkswagen should have done for their 2012 Superbowl commercial instead.

I can already see a storyline evolving in my mind of a poor, lonesome AT-AT Imperial Walker on the run from those pesky rebels, deciding to make babies with a Volkswagen bus and start a family.

This Volkswagen AT-AT Microbus sculpture was spotted by tech journalist Jack Schofield. While the exact origin of this elephant-like monstrosity hasn’t yet been discovered, it’s definitely fun to look at. If the photo is accurate, then someone has built a huge sculpture that features a VW bus that’s been modified to walk on AT-AT legs.

Even if it turns out to be some kind of Photoshoppery, it’s still something that will make you smile.

Gingerbread AT-AT: Hothy Holidays

The Star Wars movies would have been a whole different deal if all they had was a Gingerbread budget. Here is a glimpse of what it might have looked like. Can you imagine tasty gingerbread AT-ATs walking across a field of sugar as a young Luke Skyginger takes it down? Me either, but this AT-AT sure looks tasty.

This huge and delicious-looking imperial walker gingerbread treat was made by BlackMarket Bakery in Irvine, CA. It was created and baked by Rachel Klemek, the owner, who appears to be a sci-fi geek herself. The AT-AT is all gingerbread and icing, with licorice weapons.

It must be Christmas time on Hoth as well judging by all of the candy canes. This amazing geek delicacy is currently on display at the Discovery Science Center if you want a closer look. No licking!

AT-AT Liquor Cabinet Perfect for Serving Up Your Johnnie (Imperial) Walker Black

I’ve always wanted one of those fancy liquor cabinets in my house. I’m not talking about the type that look like an old globe either. I want a really cool one. Perhaps something really original, like one that looks like an AT-AT Imperial Walker. Oh, what’s that you say? Somebody already beat me to the punch? Damn.

Yep, what you’re looking at here is the most awesome bar for serving up your finest booze – all in the shape of an AT-AT. Luckily, it has yet to be brought down by a snow speeder’s tow cables, as that would be a horrible tragedy. The cabinet appears to be handcrafted from wood and brass, and stands at least 4 or 5 feet tall – unless those guys in the photo are Ewoks disguised as humans.

I know not from whence this tasty morsel of awesome comes, other than the fact that these photos were posted up on imgur about a week ago. If you happen to have been involved in the construction of this monument to geeky greatness, speak up and take credit where credit is due. I’ll be over here in the corner, keeping warm with a Hoth Toddy.

AT-AT Imperial Walker: Starbucks Edition

I am not a coffee drinker, but I have been into Starbucks on more than a few occasions with my wife. The drinks and sweets that place sells are so overpriced it’s not even funny. But regardless of how I feel about Starbucks, I really like this thing – it’s Lord Vader’s personal Starbucks.

Naturally, Darth Vader can’t have his Starbucks stationary, since the Dark Side is always on the go. This Starbucks is conveniently inside an AT-AT so at least on those long Hoth patrols in the cold, Vader and his personal Snowtroopers can get a warm drink.

Too bad the AT-AT is so vulnerable to a simple cable tied around its legs. I would hate to be inside that room filled with hot coffee when it topples over while walking. Oh, and what is with the cat storage area?

Robo-Dog: An AT-AT Walker for the Blind

Those who are short of sight can now be led by a miniature AT-AT walker instead of a proper guide dog. If they only knew what kind of monstrosity was leading them, they would no doubt let go and run in the opposite direction, hitting the nearest pole and getting knocked out cold. Which is good, because then they could forget.

I’m sure this is how AT-ATs must have been born within the Empire as well. They probably had a few Imperials who were blind and needed a guide robot. When they saw how creepy they were, they just upped the scale.

This latest robot from NSK is the ‘robo-dog’ (JP). It’s still in the R&D phase, which has been ongoing since 2005. Not sure what that says about it’s ability. It can climb staircases and small obstacles too, so snowy climates full of rebel bases shouldn’t be a problem.

If AT-ATs Had Wheels…

…they’d look exactly like you’d think they would, as is evidenced by this 4WD off-road remote-controlled vehicle, dubbed the Imperial Crawler.

The Imperial Crawler was created by Christopher Aleria, using a customized Axial Rock Crawler as its base. If only the Empire had thought to build these instead of the wobbly-legged Imperial Walkers, they probably would have won the Battle of Hoth much quicker. Though if they made any AT-STs using similar specs, they might have turned out looking like Imperial Segways.

Bones Mello: AT-AT Dog

Remember Patrick Boivin’s stop-motion video about owning a pet AT-AT? Katie Scott Mello (probably) doesn’t want to trade her pet dog Bones for a robot, so she did the next best thing: make an AT-AT costume for her greyhound in preparation for Halloween. The result speaks for itself:

He seems kinda spooked. Maybe he’s still trying to cope with his enhanced strength and cuteness. Or maybe he spotted a cat dressed as a Snow Speeder.

AT-AT Storms Chicago: Must Have Thought it Was Hoth

What would it be like if an Imperial AT-AT Walker turned up in a major US city? That’s what artist Tony Bamber asked himself before creating this awe-inspiring digital vista of an AT-AT about to stomp on Chicago’s Loop “L” train, before heading North to cross the Chicago River.

This isn’t the first time that I’ve seen something like this, and it’s probably not the last, since Star Wars is in the collective Zeitgeist. They actually remind me of Franco Brambilla’s postcards that we featured last year.

If a walker like this ever did this in a populated city, it would probably turn most of the downtown streets to chaos, since it would end up trampling almost everything in its way. Luckily, you’d still be able to run away from it because it’s so slow.

AT-AT Walker Stroller: For Babies Born on Hoth

While this isn’t recent (it actually dates back to 2007), it’s still fun. With parents spending way too much on strollers, it’s cool to see this Imperial AT-AT Walker Stroller in capable hands, and built on a budget.

Rick Russo wanted his son Reed to get to know the original Star Wars as soon as he came out of the womb, that’s why he came up with this hack for his son’s stroller. The body panels were cut out of foam from a cardboard template and tied together with zip ties. It took Rick between 30 to 40 hours to complete this hack.

The whole thing looks pretty cool and undoubtedly sets this stroller apart from all of the gazillion others. It’s a perfect idea for all of the Star Wars fans having their own kids, and it’s bound to be fun for the tots as well. Remember, it’s never too early to start your kids on Star Wars.

Star Wars Plush Vehicles: Pillow Fight on Hoth!

While these plush Star Wars vehicles won’t exactly make the jump to hyperspace anytime soon, they should do just fine for impromptu battles in your living room. Or at least to keep your neck in a comfy position while you sit on the couch crying over the changes Lucas made to the Blu-ray edition.

Choose from Luke’s X-Wing Fighter, a soft and squishy AT-AT or the ship that did the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, the fiber-filled Millennium Falcon. Each one of these plush toys measures about 6 inches across, and will look great scattered across your couch like the aftermath of the battle on Hoth. (Though a Snow Speeder would be more appropriate than an X-Wing.)

Fight clutter and win the wire wars with this wooden AT-AT model from Brando. It’s roomy enough to fit a power strip and has slits on both sides to organize and secure cords. Just make sure you don’t get its feet tangled with one of your cables.

The model measures about 12″ high, 17″ long and 6″ wide. It’s shipped flat along with the necessary nuts and bolts, so if assembling things is your thing then its practical function may just be an added bonus for you.

Adorable Lego AT-AT: He’ll Still Work for the Empire When He Grows Up

Angus MacLane created this cute little AT-AT for a contest on LEGO Star Wars enthusiast-site From Bricks to Bothans. It was part of a ‘Chibi‘ contest, meaning that the LEGO sculptures had to be shrunk to look like smaller, cuter versions of themselves.

All in all, I think that Angus definitely made a great entry. The Chibi AT-AT is certainly hard to forget. Sure, when it grows up, it’s end up being blown up by Luke Skywalker, until then, you could always keep it as a pet.

Since this isn’t a very big build, you can probably replicate what Angus has done for yourself, if you want to. Then you’ll also have a cute little AT-AT to raise all for yourself.

Building A Life-Sized AT-AT: Utter Craziness?

We’ve just started to see some powered exoskeletons, and they are still pretty clunky affairs. So how can we even think about starting to build a real AT-AT? That doesn’t seem to faze the Mike Koehler, the man behind AT-AT for America – a campaign to build a fully-functional full-size AT-AT.

Even building robots that can walk using four legs is complicated, let alone a 75-foot high monster that can carry over a ton. The trick I think is to try and make defense contractors try and build a replacement for a tank that can walk.

An AT-AT can move up to 40mph, carry 40 stormtroopers, and on top of that, an extra ton of cargo. It’s going to take a while, but if it ever does come out, it will reign the battlefield. Honestly, I think it’s just too large and unwieldy. We’ll probably see exoskeletons in the field for soldiers way before this, but I could be wrong. Mike is working on a Kickstarter page to raise funds for the build, but for now go here if you want to get involved or make a donation.

AT-AT Snow Sculpture Holds Up to Little Kids, But Not a Rebel Attack

I know that making AT-ATs out of snow has been one way of using up some of the massive snowfall that’s been plaguing the U.S. this season, but I have to say that this one from Norway actually looks pretty awesome too.

Mexican Viking recently created this one and it does look quite good. He made sure to follow the overall look of an AT-AT by checking out an image he found over at the Star Wars wiki.

As he built the sculpture, he had to allow the snow to harden before removing that supporting leg under its head. Then, he let harden it some more before adding his children.

It’s perfect to let your kids have some winter fun and pretend to ride an AT-AT. After all, we all know that AT-AT make great pets.
