One of my favorite scenes from The Empire Strikes Back is when Luke gets captured by the Wampa and is hanging upside-down from the ceiling of his icy cave. He then uses the Force to pull his lightsaber towards his hand, then slices himself down from the ceiling and proceeds to slash off one of the furry creature’s arms. Here’s that scene, recreated in CAKE form. What’s not to like?

The Planet Hoth Wampa Cake was created by Jill from Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons to celebrate her son’s 6th birthday. I sure hope that he knows what a wampa is at his age, so he can fully appreciate its awesomeness. The cake perfectly captures the Wampa’s ice cave, replacing the frozen bits with cookie frosting and white chocolate. The walls of the lair are made primarily from pretzel rods and graham crackers, with a cake forming the floor. Yum, I like sweet and salty together.

While Luke, his lightsaber and the wampa are just off-the-shelf action figures, it still looks great – though I would have liked to chomp on a bit of wampa arm if given the opportunity.

I can’t even finish a bag of Lays in 2 days.

The case was made by bit-tech forum member WEHR-WOLF. He doesn’t have a name for his mod, nor did he talk about the specs or how exactly he went about making it or if he really is a werewolf. He only said that he made it from “parts of machines and tools” with a little help from “a liter of vodka.” Lucky bastard. A little help from vodka gives me vomit and regret, not a robot with a gatling gun for an arm.

If Ian Hunter and his team at MIT have their way, the serial killers and torturers of the future will have one less tool to brandish and freak out their victims. Hunter and his colleagues have engineered a jet-injection system that can administer drugs with less pain and more accuracy compared to syringes and hypodermic needles. Hunter also engineered a formidable mustache.

The prototype injector uses an electromagnetic actuator to propel fluids at up to the speed of sound. I know that that actually sounds like more pain, but actually the injector’s nozzle is only about as wide as a mosquito’s proboscis, and mosquito bites are far lower in the pain scale compared to needle injections.

Another advantage of this device is that the velocity of the delivery of a drug can be adjusted by controlling the current applied to the actuator. Meaning it can <del>be turned into a weapon</del> be adjusted depending on a patient’s skin.

Someone call Kanye West. I know he’s a very busy man but he has to know that Garrett Mace has made the best pair of shutter shades of all time. Mace’s LED Matrix glasses have flashing lights just like Yeezy on Graduation.

Mace wowed crowds at the Maker Faire with his dope glasses, sick rhymes and tycoon showers. Perhaps the last two were exaggerated but these glasses really are cool. The 20 x 6 matrix of LEDs are “driven by SPI from an integrated Arduino-compatible” board mounted on the right temple and powered by a Lithium-polymer battery mounted on the left temple. Charging and code downloading are done via USB. Swag is attained by wearing the glasses.

You can see more pictures of the shades on Mace’s Lytro profile. Mace said he’s planning to sell a kit of the glasses on his website once he’s polished the device; he seems to be having trouble with the hinges. He also said that if he can’t find a low cost solution he might turn to Kickstarter. It would be funny if Mr. West backed and filled up the fundraiser on his own.

The problem with repairing stuff is that I don’t how to do it. But if there’s one thing I do know about repairing, it’s that whatever it is you’re working on is bound to be dimly lit. That’s why the world needs something like Ions, which are tiny magnetic LED lights. The world also needs stuff to not break, but I guess that’s beyond the scope of current technology.

Currently a mere concept, the geniuses behind Ions dream that their invention will have a magnetic base, a pivoting hinge and possibly a dimming function.

The Take Earth Back trailer for Mass Effect 3 was kick ass, although in light of the controversy about how the trilogy ended some would say it was misleading. Then again, pretty much all videogame trailers are misleading. Perhaps even this machinima version of the trailer is misleading. The squid in Minecraft are not that big. Or are they? I’ve never actually played the game.

I don’t think I need to elaborate on this one. It’s just an Xbox 360 with a case expertly modded with an Iron Man theme. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to brace myself for the deluge of “Where do I get one?” comments. And by deluge I mean like 3 comments. Wait how exactly does one brace oneself? Should I hug myself? Or fix my teeth?

The mod was done by one Zachariah Perry Cruse. In case the old Xbox 360 model didn’t clue you in, Zach – can I call you Zach? – made this ages ago, 2010 A.D. to be exact. As you can see it has <del>Famicom</del> Iron Man’s colors, a 120GB hard drive marked ‘Stark Industries’ and its own light-up arc reactor. Because this is an old model let’s just imagine that the reactor is the only thing preventing the console from RROD’ing.

So where can you get one? From the guy who bought it. This kick-ass console was sold just a couple of days ago, which is as unbelievable as it is unfortunate for the rest of you who would’ve wanted to own one. I also saw a similar mod for the slim version of the Xbox 360 made by Major League Mods, but it seems that one’s been bought as well. I guess you’d be better off pulling a Tony Stark and make your own case mod. Or maybe not.

Right now we’re looking at a pair of Vans slip-ons painted with the Hylian shield design from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

These shoes were made by KyozoKicks, maker of custom footwear with art from games such as Phoenix Wright, Minecraft, Okami, Sonic and more. I actually like all of those more than this design, but unfortunately KyozoKicks isn’t selling those anymore.

The Twilight Princess Vans slip-ons are indeed for sale, but you better have a link to a fat wallet to cop a pair, because KyozoKicks is selling them for the grass-slashing, pot-breaking, chicken-throwing price of $195(USD).

Nintendo Characters are awesome, and Japanese representations of things are awesome, so why not combine the two? “Nintendo Characters are Japanese.” Not like this – a guy named Jed has decided to make Ukiyo Woodblock Prints showing all of his favorite Nintendo characters as they appeared back in the age of dragons and those round hats with the carts that were pulled in the streets. This just in: ethnocentrism is not a rampant issue in today’s society, we are educated about other countries and their cultures. Germany: Audi. Japan: Nintendo. Italy: pasta. Lots and lots of pasta.

This is one of the first Ukiyo pieces that Jed created, and it depicts our favorite wore-green-every-day-until-he-was-seventeen hero: Link. I particularly like how the Master Sword was redone – still recognizable, but not the same. Overall, a good mashup of ancient Japan and the Legend of Zelda in this wooden print.

I like the Samus ukiyo print more than the Link one simply because there’s an explosion and more women. The dragon was definitely a smart way to pull off the fact that Samus shoots electric balls of death all of the time. To see all of the prints, go to the newly-created Ukiyo-Nintendo Facebook page.

Above is the newly released ukiyo sketch of Mario Kart, which is just a draft that was just posted on the Facebook page – he’ll add color, among other things. I wanted to share it though, because the Koopa and the squid were too good not to put into the post. Creepy turtles!

These ear plugs were made by deviantART member Marcus Hermansson. For those of you interested, unfortunately he’s not interested in selling them. Maybe you can one-up him and plug actual parts from consoles into your lobes. +1 if you can fit an entire console in there.

Mmmm… all geeks can appreciate a good slab of meat. While bacon is usually the first choice among us techies, and bacon plus cheese plus bacon is a close second, sausage is always appreciated at my annual Tetris/Cosplay/Steampunk/Apple fest. (Yes, I have one of those, and no, you’re not invited. This is the internet – for all I know, you could be an evil cat who feeds on happiness. Like most cats.) The Cupcakewurst combines the best of the best into one delicious treat: sausage casing filled with baked cupcake batter, put on a sliced open Long John, and topped with raspberry jelly.

At first look, this seems to be pretty disgusting. At second look, it seems to be still disgusting, and I am beginning to wonder whether or not I would eat it. Perhaps if we had this same setup, except without the animal parts covering my cupcake, then we’d be okay. Bacon frosting was one thing, but cupcake-filled sausages? This might be too delicious for <del>my weak stomach</del> mankind to handle. UP THE VOMIT BAG MANUFACTURING BY 200%! OCCUPY WALLSTREET!

Stef of Cupcake Project makes these beauties by pouring a bunch of chocolate cupcake batter into animal intestines, and then putting them on a grill. (Yep.) Ah, what the heck – I’d buy twenty, just because I like to support the geeks who are out there trying to come up with amazing food combinations. And, hey – who knows – maybe these are delicious! It’s kind of difficult, with the current technology, to taste things via the internet. It’s much easier to walk around and then lick your shoes in order to find out what the ground had stuck to it. *Licks shoe*

Several days ago we saw Disney’s plan for turning everyday objects – including humans – into touch-sensitive interfaces. The MaKey MaKey is a lot simpler than that, but what it does is still very impressive. Any object that can conduct “at least a tiny bit of electricity” – fruits, Play-Doh, humans, water, etc. – can be turned into a keypad using MaKey MaKey.

The “invention kit” comes with a circuit board, a bunch of alligator clips and a USB cable. All you have to do is connect the MaKey MaKey board to a computer, then attach the alligator clips to the object that you want to use as a keypad and you’re good to go. Your computer will just think that you have a USB keyboard connected. It’s like the Old Spice commercial made real: your bananas are now keyboards!

How awesome is that?! The rest of the world has already gone on record with a resounding “Hell, yeah that’s awesome!”, because as of this writing the MaKey MaKey Kickstarter fundraiser has gathered more than 6 times its original goal amount of $25,000 (USD). You can be one of the first to own a MaKey MaKey kit by pledging at least $35 (USD) to the fundraiser.

Many works of fiction as well as videogames feature weapons that shoot bolts of lightning to devastating effect. The closest thing we have to these weapons is the Tesla coil, a device that produces high voltage, low current electricity. The thing is, Tesla coils are mostly in the form of large, stationary devices. Until now.

The Tesla Gun is the creation of mad scientist Rob Flickenger, who based it on a weapon used by none other than Nikola Tesla in the graphical novel The Five Fists of Science. You can see the fictional gun on page 14 of this pdf file. Flickenger admits that the gun that Tesla wields in the novel is far more advanced than what he made, but his gun has two advantages: it is battery-powered, and more importantly it exists.

So how does it work? “You pull the trigger, and lightning comes out the front.” It’s that simple.

Actually it’s not that simple. Flickenger went to great lengths to create the gun, including making an aluminum housing molded from a Nerf gun, a porcelain high voltage switch and a power supply that steps up the voltage from a drill battery from 18V to 20,000V. There’s more to it than that, but I think most of you just want to see it in action. Here you go.

Like most Tesla coils, Flickenger built his gun for entertainment and science, not as a weapon or a mere toy. If you’re as mad, talented and responsible as Flickenger, you can try building your own Tesla Gun using the information that he posted on his website.

Aside from the game’s launch day problems, one of the issues that Blizzard faced with Diablo III was the outrage of some fans regarding the game’s art direction, i.e. that it wasn’t as dark or grim as the previous games. This is the developer’s response: a secret level that is bursting with brightness and happiness.

The level is appropriately called Whimsyshire. It can only be reached by playing a game-long Easter Egg hunt of sorts. You’ll have to collect items and a plan as you play the game. Here’s footage of Sanctuary’s dreamland:

If you want to join in on the fun, BattleNet forum member Zerofire will tell you how to get to Whimsyshire. If only there was a secret offline single player level.

You may have already seen and drooled at those Iron Man and War Machine sneakers from a couple of years ago, but this pair may just make your heart burst, because it comes with a replica of the arc reactor from the Iron Man movies.

Made by MoreThanArtToWear, these modified Nike Dunk High sneakers are packed with Iron Men. They’ve got the crimson and gold colors locked down, an Iron Man lace accessory on each shoe, Iron Man’s mask painted on the heels and a mini-arc reactor on the tongue. That’s not all: the shoes come in a suitcase similar to the Mark V armor seen in Iron Man 2. Finally, there’s a replica of the arc reactor inside the suitcase that you can detach and place on your chest or wherever you fancy. The shoes have built-in batteries to power the lights. Sadly they don’t have jets. At least not yet.

Now for the bad news: the shoes cost $750 (USD) to make. Now for the badder news: due to high demand, MoreThanArtToWear has temporarily stopped taking orders for them. Now for the baddest news: Guys, once and for all, I do not have the plans for this arc reactor replica. This guy does. Not me.

Today’s handheld videogame systems all have built-in clocks, but if you want to see the time on a Game Boy the closest you can get is the Watch Boy, an official Nintendo merchandise released back in the 90s. The design of the watch is unabashedly childish, which is why it’s awesome.

Despite the fact that it’s a wristwatch, I think the time-telling function of the Watch Boy is just a bonus. You’ll look at it not to figure out the present but to remember the past.

The Watch Boy is no longer in production, adding to its appeal to collectors and gamers alike. It’s not surprising then that a seller on eBay is asking for at least $100 (USD) for his Watch Boy, and the price will keep going up until the auction ends on May 19th. That’s a ridiculous price for a plastic and rubber wristwatch, but I say it’s worth it.

Equip it with the Zelda Fireplace Art, aka The Lazy Man’s Fireplace: set it and forget it. You don’t have to worry about it burning out or burning your house down.

You can order the Zelda Fireplace Art from James Bit Originals on Etsy. The list price is $110 (USD), but prices may still vary depending on the measurements of your fireplace. If you’d rather have something a bit cleverer – 8-bits cleverer to be exact – you can also try making a papier-mâché version of the graphic.

At first glance, the Ewok Cake looks adorable! It’s wearing its adorable hood, and its body is covered in adorable fur-like frosting. Then, you take a longer look and realize that this is in fact only the top half of an Ewok. But, cakes are usually just portions of a character, so this isn’t extremely out of place. Finally, your eyes move to its face, and you see eyes that just suck the light out of the room. That’s when you call for a change of undies and go visit a different booth at the cake fair.

While I may personally find the eyes disturbing, many others have found them to be adorable. I’m fine with whichever decision you choose to make, just know that when it comes time to <del>eating people because we ran out of chocolate bars</del> voting people off of the island, you’re my first pick. “Where are you going to vote me to, you moron? We’re stuck on an island. This isn’t Survivor.” I see your point… we’ll have to feed you to the large gorillas that I saw roaming the cliffside, then.

Though we might be able to agree that the Ewok Cake is slightly disturbing, nobody can argue with its accuracy and detail. Bake a couple hundred of these and we can make a new Star Wars movie based off of the social class struggles of the Ewoks. It’ll be the next Scarlet Letter, the next Uncle Tom’s Cabin. This is going to be huge! Even if it’s horrible, just saying that it’s a commentary on society makes it very sophisticated and famous. Everything I just said: summary of what I learned in all of my english classes. Also, Shakespeare is more risque than you might think.

If you love this Ewok Cake, then you’ll want to look at some other Star Wars baked goods. Check out the Star Wars Flat Cakes and the AT-AT Cake if your in the mood for food.
