Bamboo has become a nice, sustainable alternative to modern-day plastics. These days you can even find it on some computer accessories like laptop and cell phone cases, keyboards and mice. Silva’s Bamboo MacBook Case is a nice option if you’re looking for a case for your MacBook Pro. The entire case is crafted out of a solid sheet of bamboo.

The case features a hand-cut strap made from a full hide, which has been hand-burnished and oiled. The interior of the case is lined with soft wood felt. The bamboo has been hand-rubbed so its finish is as hard and as smooth as possible.

Silva uses 100% solid Carmel bamboo that has been CNC machined and hand assembled. It’s definitely an attractive case, and since it’s made out of bamboo, it shouldn’t weigh too much.

While it may be natural and made from sustainable wood, it’s not cheap. The Silva MacBook Case for the MacBook Pro costs $179.99(USD) over on their website. It’s also available in an iPad 2 version for $129.99.

With all of the wooden backpanels for iPhones, I guess it was only a matter of time before we saw an entire wooden-hulled smartphone. This one, the ADzero, was designed by Kieron-Scott Woodhouse and it’s kind of cool.

The ADzero is made from bamboo and it will probably be sold in design boutiques, not cell phone stores, since it won’t be mass-produced. The overall weight of this phone is half of an iPhone, despite its larger screen. Woodhouse is a design student at Middlesex University who was contacted by Jerro Lao, a tech entrepreneur after he saw some early concept images of the wooden phone.

The prototype runs Ice Cream Sandwich and will have access to the Android Market. Other than a mention of a built-in ring flash, there’s not much other detail about the specs of the final phone. A production version of the ADZero bamboo phone is expected to be launched in 2012 in both China and the UK. There’s no word on any North American distribution at this point.

This new case from Hong Kong’s Goods of Desire is called the Literati and it’s made to work with the Blackberry Playbook. On top of having a sweet name, G.O.D. makes some interesting accessories. The case is a play on Apple’s Smart Cover, though it works a little differently.

The idea for this design comes from ancient manuscripts from China, where before paper was invented, they used to carve their books into strips of bamboo held together by string. G.O.D. notes that in Chinese culture, people still hold printed books this way.

The Literati Roll Case uses the same approach, breaking the tablet’s cover down into individual strips which can be rolled up. The case can be used as a stand as well. While the prototypes were made out of bamboo, the production models will be made out of plastic, available in black or white. Since the case was designed specifically on behalf of Blackberry, it’s unlikely that the Literati will be available for the iPad or other popular tablets any time soon.

This simple, yet distinctive acoustic amplifier is made out of bamboo. It’s supposed to amplify sound enough so that you can rely on your iPhone’s tiny speaker to power the sound of your tunes.

The iBamboo was made by New York area Etsy contributor Anatoliy Omelchenko and I have to say that it does look good with an iPhone in place. It’s machined so that it can rest on a flat surface. You just insert your iPhone 4 or 4S on the top and press play. The natural resonance of bamboo will amplify your music – though I’m not sure how much. With openings on both ends of the dock, it’s supposed to produce a “stereo-like” effect, but don’t expect true stereo separation, since the iPhone only has a single speaker.

Each one is crafted from a single piece of bamboo, then finished with a black lacquer coating. Keep in mind that since iBamboo is crafted from a natural material, each dock will be slightly different. The iBamboo sells for $25(USD) on Etsy.

They join the other handcrafted bamboo iPhone 4 cases that Grove has got available.

Grove has two options available. The first one costs $79 (USD) and is a hard case that merges a bamboo back and a customizable leather smart cover, kind of like the one that’s available from Apple.

The second is a laser-engraved bamboo iPad skin, that costs $29 to $39 and is currently available for both the iPad 1 and 2 in a variety of styles. This will definitely give your iPad 2 a new look.

The hard case will be available in 3 to 6 weeks, and they’re taking pre-orders now with a $20 deposit.

This The Walet Mount was designed by Jonathan Danforth from North Carolina. On back, you’ll find keyhole slots for any direct-to-wall mounts, as well as VESA-compliant standard holes for articulating monitor arms. On the side, you’ll find a hole for a headphone cord.

If you’d rather buy one than make one yourself, you can order one for $64.95 (USD) here.

If you care about the environment, you’ll love that Lexon has just announced a new range of small appliances powered by renewable energy.

Designed by Elium Studio, the Lexon SAFE line of home goods come encased in environmentally-friendly corn bio-plastic and trimmed off with bamboo. I think best item in the collection is the little wind-up radio.

In addition to the wind-up radio, the collection includes a solar-powered calculator, alarm clock, and a LED flashlight.

Does your laptop get hotter than Hades and overheat all the time? I know there are plenty of laptop cooling solutions out there, but how many of them actually look decent?

Macally’s wooden ECOFAN and ECOFANPRO stands keep your laptop nice and cool, and look good doing it . Each stand has a built-in USB powered cooling fan, and can support any laptop up to 17″. They’re made from Bamboo wood, which not only has a warm natural style, it’s eco-friendly.

While the ECOFAN features a fixed-position stand, I greatly prefer the adjustable height stand on the ECOFANPRO (pictured above). Here’s a snapshot of the simpler model:

Both stands are available over on Amazon, with prices around $32 to 33 (USD) for either model. With virtually no price difference, there’s no reason not to go PRO.

Now all I need is one of those Bamboo laptops to go with this, and I’ll be set.

Hitachi’s data storage brand SimpleTech wants a piece of the tree-hugging techie market, so they’ve come up with the [re]Drive, a 500GB external hard drive that’s packaged in recyclable aluminum, and “renewable, naturally grown bamboo.” Are we making test tube bamboos now? Seriously though the aluminum (and bamboo) enclosure acts as a heat sink, negating the need for an internal fan, thereby saving power. Nice.

There’s more: [re]Drive’s packaging is made of either recycled or recyclable material. And that “naturally grown” bit? Hitachi – or SimpleTech – really means that they grow their own bamboo. That’s one less thing that they have to transport, which means less fossil fuels consumed, which means less air pollution.

And there’s a bit more, but I’m tired. Go read the rest of it if you want. But if you’re already sold on the [re]Drive, head on to Amazon and get one for $84 (USD). Let’s hope bamboo doesn’t become scarce because of these environment-friendly electronics companies and their bamboo-encased gadgets.

Salk Sound‘s latest speakers, unofficially called the HT 4 to indicate it’s supremacy over the current HT 3 line, weighs in at a whopping 155 lbs , stands about 42″ high and are said to be capable of delivering “a very accurate recreation of what you would hear in a concert hall or other live venue.” For those not familiar with Salk Sound, the company handcrafts high-end audio systems. With that in mind, let’s look at the HT4:

They look kind of ugly to me, but then again when it comes to speakers looks don’t matter as much as the quality of sound, and this giant has got a bunch of audiophiles drooling at the prospect of owning – or even just testing – an HT4. The cabinets you see above are made of trans-laminated bamboo, which doesn’t really add to the quality of the sound (at least that’s what I gathered from the thread), but there’s a cheaper MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) version in the works as well. The price? About $18,000 (USD) for the 12″ woofer-equipped bamboo version, and at least $14,000 for the MDF version. An HT4 with “only” a 10″ woofer in bamboo will be about $12,000, and the MDF version at least $10,000. Let’s all sigh and imagine what kind of sounds $18,000 buys.

According to the folks over at SourcingMap, the bamboo provides a more extensive sound range than other small speakers, but I’m not so sure given the less-than-stellar 300-10,000Hz frequency response range quoted on their site. And at just 2W per channel, you’re not going to blow any eardrums with these USB-powered woody speakers. But given the low $26.99 (USD) price tag for a pair of these, it probably wouldn’t hurt to take a gamble and listen for yourself. One man’s 300Hz is another man’s deep bass boom for all we know. And maybe you’re like me and only your dog can here frequencies about 10,000 Hz these days.

If you’re looking for the right speakers for your Asian-themed decor, they’ll fit in perfectly, and at about 1/35th the price of these cool dragon speakers that you were too cheap to buy.

The Wacom Bamboo will retail for under $150 when it’s released later this Spring, and features a wide variety of features for both creative and functional uses. The small (appx. 4″ x 6″) drawing surface fits nicely on any desktop, and comes with a nicely designed stand for its wireless stylus.

The tablet is sensitive to 512 levels of pressure, making it ideal for illustration and painting applications. It also features four “express” hot keys and a nifty zoom/scroll ring, similar to an iPod’s scroll wheel which can all be used to improve navigation through your programs. It also provides handwriting recognition capabilities and gesture-based input for use in some applications. The tablet features USB connectivity and works with both PCs and Macs.
