While it’s certainly no longer the case, there was a time when solving the Rubik’s Cube was one of the greatest accomplishments of the geek world. Now, there are people (and robots) who can solve it in a matter of seconds. But the original 1980s Cube is still an icon which conjures memories of frustration (and occasional joy).

While you probably don’t have a need for a Rubik’s Cube in your house these days, you definitely need to take a bath from time to time to keep from stinking. So why not make it fun, and grab this Rubik’s Cube soap block, from DigitalSoaps?

This thing is a dead-ringer for the original puzzle, with all the perfect grooves and 54 colorful stickers hand-applied to the underlying form. Only the bottom is a little different (it’s completely flat), presumably because that’s how the soap molding process works. Still, it’s got yellow stickers on it, but you probably don’t want to show off that side.

Just like the original Rubik’s Cube, you’ll need to peel off the stickers to solve this puzzle – unless you want a bunch of stickers stuck to your bottom when you get out of the tub. Unlike the original Cube, this one smells like grape soda. This was only the case with the original if your little brother got out those Mr. Sketch scented grape markers and drew all over yours.

If you’d like a Rubik’s Cube soap for yourself, head on over to Etsy, where you can grab one for $22 (USD).

Oh, Japan. Not only can we count on you to innovate, but to constantly keep us amused with strange and silly gadgets. The latest in a long line of wacky Japanese goods has to be these headphone plugs designed to keep crap from falling into your headphone jacks. Oh, and they look like a little boy taking a whiz.

Presumably inspired by the famous Manneken Pis statue, these silly things plug into your headphone jack, and pee all over your fancy new gadgets. They’re the perfect complement to those urine-powered batteries I know you’re running all your devices with.

They’re available from Strapya (JP) for just ¥399 (~$5 USD) each, but I don’t see them on their international website yet. What a tragedy.

We’re all strapped for time these days. A good illustration of just how valuable time is was shown in that bomb of a movie that starred Justin Timberlake, In Time. In the movie, time had become the currency which was used to pay for stuff, aside from making sure that you were still, well, alive.

I doubt we’ll ever reach that stage, but the point is, time is valuable. Time is money. And time is something we all probably don’t have enough of.

So for the guys, there’s the e-Urinal. This thing will speed you up by checking your urinary health as you pee. The touchscreen fires up as you go, and you can just browse through the different menu and options by tapping (preferably after washing your hands.) So maybe it might also be a good idea to stick a mini sink in there somewhere.

The e-Urinal concept would measure the PH, SG, URO, BLO, WBC, PRO, GLI, BIL, & KET in your pee. That’s a whole lot of stuff, but basically, those are measures of your sugar levels, PH, and red/white blood cell count, among others. It could also store your history so you could check up on your trends over time (assuming you can remember which urinal you used.)

The e-Urinal was designed by Royce Zhang. It seems pretty cool, though it would be much cooler if he also came up with a female version. Hmmm.

The Breeze Rack is another concept gadget designed for your bathroom. As if we didn’t already have enough stuff lying around in our bathrooms, right? That may be true, but the Breeze Rack might actually lessen the stuff you already have in there because of its multi-functionality.

Aside from being a towel rack, it’s also a hair dryer, bathroom fan, and sterilizer! So in effect, you’ll be replacing four gadgets with this single, sleek, bar-like metal rack.

Just hang your wet towel on the rack and either let it dry naturally or flick it on to have it dry off your towel and even sterilize it. And to dry your hair, just remove the hair dryer from the unattached end and switch on. Quick and easy.

The Breeze Rack was designed by Jo Jae Young and is a Red Dot design concept winner.

How do you get more customers into your bar? Create some new fancy drinks? Maybe have a game night? Well, The Exhibit Bar in London went the video game route, by installing some new gaming urinals in the men’s bathroom.

These video game urinals were created by Captive Media, which is a good name. As long as you are slinging wiz, you’re not going anywhere, therefore you’re captive to their entertainment. The games have names like you would expect: Clever Dick, On The Piste and so on, and they are entire controlled by peeing.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Just aim your stream in the proper direction, and you control the game. If you are proud of your score, you can also post it on the online leader board and Twitter.

Once they market the hell out of this and add advertising, the novelty will wear off and then guess what? Prepare for pooping games. Although I suppose those high scores will be more geared to the largest of humans. I can’t wait. That’s sarcasm. I can wait. Please never make this happen.

Animator/Father of the year/Aperture Science interior designer James Farr not only hooked up his son Vector Farr with the best name in the world, he also gave the kid a Portal-themed bedroom.

Ah, gotta love Etsy. While the place is loaded with awesome and amusing handcrafted goods, sometimes artists create stuff that’s just plain strange. With that in mind, I give you…

…The Data Toilet.

Actually, PCB Creations calls this toilet they made from recycled circuit boards “The Royal Data Throne,” but I prefer my moniker. I was actually going to say something about how you could flush your bad memory down the toilet, but I figure I’ll leave the captions to you guys. I’m sure you’ll come up with something more clever than me.

Thankfully, at just 12-inches tall, and 5-inches wide, this circuit board toilet is way too small to sit on, so unless you’ve got a really small (and well-padded) ass, don’t get any funny ideas about actually taking a dump in it.

If you’ve got $500 (USD) to waste, go hit a casino and bet it all on number 2 on the roulette wheel. Then bet your winnings all on the same number again. If you still have $500 left afterwards, you can grab this oddity over on Etsy now.

It’s always annoying when you have to go (go as in poop or pee, not go as in, to leave) and find that there’s no vacant toilet nearby. You can run and search the immediate vicinity, but chances are, the bathroom will almost always be occupied (especially in times when you most need it.)

So what did some clever people come up with? CLOO. No, it’s not some portable toilet or anything of that sort. Rather, it’s an app for your smartphone that will sort of work like a geo-targeted social network for toilets. It connects people who: 1) have a vacant toilet and 2) need to go urgently.

That means CLOO is working on the concept that some people will allow total strangers to pee or take a dump in their bathroom for a couple of dollars.

Some people have expressed disgust at the concept, which I understand, because really, you’ll basically be opening your door to complete strangers who could have other intentions than just using your toilet. Nonetheless, good try though, CLOO crew.

It might sound a bit weird at first, maybe even eccentric, but once you discover the reason why, then it will all make sense. I’m talking about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s recent call to have the toilet reinvented. You heard me: the toilet.

We’ve been going potty for decades on that thing and it’s been working fine so far, so why the call for a re-design? That’s because while we all have the luxury of flushing away our undesirable waste, <del>millions</del> billions of people in various parts of the world aren’t so fortunate.

People in developing nations across the globe don’t have access to a continuous supply of water, and therefore, don’t really have anything to flush their toilets with.

You can check out the video below by the Foundation about their new sanitation improvement initiative:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have decided to put in a generous $42 million in new program investments and strategies. But more than that, some of the funds will be channeled into efforts to develop sanitation technology and hopefully come up with a re-design for the toilet.

Guys, admit it. At some point in your life, you’ve tried to carefully aim or control your stream when you’re taking a leak. There are even those little target urinal cakes in some bathrooms to encourage accurate aim. Now, SEGA is showing off a new video game concept that takes pee-control to a whole new level.

Yep, despite all their recent hardships, Japan is still chock-full of weird and wacky ideas. The SEGA ToyLets game rewards players with points not based on accuracy, but the volume and intensity of urine they spray into the game controller (aka the urinal). Infrared sensors monitor when a contestant approaches, activating the game screen. Once you start doing your business, microwave sensors measure the speed and duration of the flow.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you can see from the video clip above, you’ll even be able to compete head-to-head (literally) with other contestants for the best stream. SEGA hopes that bars and restaurants will buy these and install them in their restrooms, since the game screen can also be used to sell advertisements. With a cost of about ¥170,000 (~$1729 USD) for the system, and another ¥10,000 (~$123) for the game, you might even consider installing one of these in your own bathroom if you’ve got a couple thousand bucks to spare on a conversation piece.

We can only hope that this won’t be turned into a Kinect game.

It’s geeky alright but also quite tasteless, unlike what Destructoid forum member eisley and her boyfriend did to their bathroom – a diorama of Level 2-2 from Super Mario Bros. Now they can take a bath with Mario and his underwater enemies.

Awesome paint job. Eisley and her boyfriend are not quite done with their project – they also plan on installing other Mario and Nintendo related items such as towels, shower curtains and shelves – but they’ll try to make a video of their bathroom when they’re done.

Back in the days of the Super Nintendo, I think we can agree that many of the games weren’t worth a piss. The sports games were the worst when I was a kid. The only games that I ever seemed to find around were football or baseball video games that were boring. I was more the racing game type or Super Mario Bros. type.

If you have a bunch of old games that you really don’t like or just don’t work and you need to make something geeky, this is it. This urinal is made of old SNES cartridges and some other supplies. The finished product is a urinal that you can pee on.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The thing I see about this is that if you make a mistake sealing up all those gaps, you will end up with pee everywhere. It also looks like this urinal is very likely to overflow. A urinal overflowing on your shoes is one of the few things guys fear in the public restroom. You can make your own game urinal for about $250 and with eight hours of your time.

I love Star Wars. For a while, when I was younger, I used to watch the movies every month or so with my sister. Most of the time, we skipped the original and watched Empire and Jedi. That’s why I love this bathroom. It was designed by Emily Jagoda for a kid’s bathroom, but in our geek culture, it would be fine for adults as well.

The mosaic is nice and clean. It features C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca. These characters do seem to gel together in the movies and they do the same in this mosaic. There are more characters hidden away. I think I see a Luke Skywalker or Wedge Antilles peeking out as well.

Needless to say that I’d like to have one of these in my house, but I doubt that my wife or the new occupants of our duplex would approve.

Anyone with kids knows that it can be a challenge to teach them to use the toilet. My daughter always got the sequence wrong, wipe, then flush. She finally got it down. I can only imagine how hard it would be to drop a deuce if you live on the ISS. The first challenge would be that one tremendous fart might just send you floating around the cabin.

This would also bring new meaning to the term “floaters.” I would not be happy if I walked in and there were literally turds floating around. I bet that has happened before though. The thing is, in zero gravity anything floats around. If the suction fails, you will be in there with a bag trying to catch Mr. Hankey. National Geographic has a video that explains how to do the deed in space.

That space throne looks intimidating; it would really suck to get a case of the squirts while living on the ISS. I find it more than a little funny that part of astronaut training is how to take a poo.

Last week, Kohler unveiled a $6,400 toilet that will blow your socks off. Seriously though, I can’t fathom paying that amount of money for a toilet. You could buy a used car, or a nice home theater for that kind of cash.

This incredibly expensive toilet has got a bidet, integrated deodorizer, and air dryer for your bum. The lid will automatically open and close, sort of like a Transformer. There is even a seat and foot warmer and a built-in music system so that you can listen to something nice while you’re doing your business. Plus it’s all controlled from a fancy touchscreen remote.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While I don’t doubt that this sounds revolutionary, I can’t imagine spending over $6k on a crapper. If you must experience something like this, spend the night in a suite at a high-end hotel and poop in their fancy toilets instead.

There’s probably something to be said about LED shower heads or light therapy in general, especially when you have just woken up. This LED Color Changing Shower Head is from Chinavasion and the colors will change depending on the temperature of the water, making it easy to figure out if the water is going to scald you or freeze you.

Temperatures below 90°F make it turn green, temps between 91 and 105°F it becomes blue and 107 to 113°F will make it red. If it gets above 114°F, the shower head will start to flash, alerting you to the danger of potentially scalding yourself. These shower heads don’t require any batteries. There is an internal generator powered by the flow of water to charge it up.

You can get one for just $13 a pop here. That’s not a bad price for something like this.

Years ago, when I had a “real job,” we had one bathroom in the entire place. The thing I always hated was if you waited too long to take a leak and had to go right then, someone was always in the bathroom. Apparently, I am not the only one that happens to think that way, and one geek decided to use some tech to tell him when it was a good time to head to the potty.

He called his invention iPotti and it’s made to tell you when someone is in the room and when it vacant. He designed the system using a Make interface board from MakingThings.com, a couple of ambient light sensors, and then a Mac app to monitor the throne room’s status. The heart of the thing is a Atmel Sam7 Arm microcontroller that is stuck on the Make board.

That interface board has Ethernet, USB, port and other headers for connectivity. The program puts a little logo in the Mac desktop that glows red if the bathroom is vacant or green if it’s filled. The catch is that the things only work by sensing light. If someone leaves the light on when they leave, you get a false filled reading. The next update should use a motion sensor and add a methane detector so you know if someone dropped a stinky load and you need to wait before going in.

This gadget won’t win points for style, and I’m sure rich folks wouldn’t be caught dead with one installed in their bathrooms. But I’m sure anyone can see how useful this little gadget could be. The LavNav – short for Lavatory Navigator – is meant to be placed on the lid of a toilet bowl. It has a proximity sensor, enabling it to automatically light up when someone comes near. Runway cleared for landing, no need to turn on the blinding light at night.

As you can see, the LavNav also reminds you to put the toilet seat back down by switching its light from green to red.

You can order the LavNav from I Want One of Those for £19.99 (appx. $32 USD).
