Okamiden Bento: Eater and the Wolf

Fans of the Nintendo DS game Okamiden will immediately recognize Chibiterasu, the game’s sickeningly-cute little wolf protagonist being served up in this tasty bento lunch box. The meal was created by by bento expert AnnaTheRed, who’s clearly got better knife skills than I.

In addition to the bento box, she also made a gomuku-sushi bowl, which isn’t officially a bento, but demonstrates some similarly intricate food-play skills.

I’ll leave all the careful descriptions of the foods Anna used to make these scenes to her blog article, but I will tell you that Chibiterasu is made from hanpen, which is made from a ground white fish, and detailed with seaweed, broccoli stem and red pepper. I can assure you that no actual wolves were harmed in the making of these meals.

Now I have no doubt that these were delicious meals, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat them. I’d just have to stare at them and leave them alone until they got good and moldy and I had to throw them out. The idea of eating little Chibiterasu is just too much for me to take.

Anpanman Bento Machine Lets You Really Play With Your Food

We’ve featured some fun bento box creations on the site over the years, but they’re clearly the works of master food artisans with tons of time on their hands. Now thanks to this new gizmo from Japan, you can make your own funny lunches without any such skills.

Bandai’s new Anpanman sushi maker toy lets you crank out edible nori maki faces of characters from the famous Japanese kids’ anime series. The process is reminiscent of one of those Play-Doh machines you used to play with when you were a kid, extruding rolls of colorful food through templates of faces. Except this time, you’ll be eating actual food instead of Play-Doh. The diagram below explains it better…

Ready to roll (some sushi)? At this point the Anpanman bento toy is available only in Japan for ¥5040 (appx. $55 USD), but hopefully some enterprising importer will bring them to the rest of the world for all to enjoy.

Muramasa: the Demon Bento

The recent Muramasa: The Demon Blade has been well received amongst Wii fans and critics alike–so well received, in fact, that Muramasa has already joined the ranks of such games as BioShock. By that, I mean someone’s modeling their lunches after the action RPG.

An excellent likeness, which makes it a perfect homage to an excellent and beautiful game. Haven’t played it? Have faith–Muramasa is probably worth your time. After all, if someone is willing to eat (a likeness of) it, it must be good… and tasty.

Though, uh, and maybe I’m wrong here, I’m thinking Momohime may be wearing more clothing in the official artwork version than she is in the lunchbox rendition. Maybe the official Momohime can lend the other a few layers of fabric.

Bioshock Bento Box: Come to (Big) Daddy

For those of you who have put in your fill of time playing Bioshock, you know that Big Daddy can be one mean dive suit wearin’ mutha-flippa’. But now that he’s been transformed into a tasty lunchtime treat, he doesn’t look so imposing anymore.

This delicious Bento box was created by flickr contributor AnnaTheRed, and features completely edible versions of Big Daddy and his faithful (and creepy) companion, Little Sister.

If you happen to read Japanese, Anna has provided a detailed diagram which gives you a virtual “paint-by-numbers” to create your own. Best I can tell, Big Daddy is comprised primarily of seaweed, sticky rice, bread, sesame seeds, and eggs. Lil Sis appears to be more of a ham (and cheese).

Unfortunately, there’s no ADAM or EVE in the recipe, so you won’t get any special genetic powers (other than the special “food coma” plasmid) from chowing down on this happy meal.

Super Mario Bento Boxes Make Mouths Happy

A uniquely Japanese cultural phenomenon is Bento box lunches where the meal is dressed up with whimsical imagery so kids will be more inclined to eat their food. Check out this great example featuring the likeness of everyone’s favorite little Italian plumber, crafted entirely from edible items.

From what I can tell, Mario’s face appears to be made out of some sort of lunch meat, while his bright red hat looks like it might be from radishes or other colorful root veggies. But this clearly obsessed Bento fanatic didn’t stop with Mario.

She went on to create edible versions of Luigi, Bowser, Wario, Princess Peach and a bunch of other citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom.

If these don’t get your kids to choke down his or her bologna and Cheese Whiz sandwiches, I don’t know what else would.

Oddly enough, with all the foods used to make these clever creations, I couldn’t find a single mushroom anywhere in the whole bunch.
