Big Daddy Amigurumi: Bioshock Gets Soft and Squeezy

While most of you were probably busy this past weekend killing splicers with your drill and protecting Little Sisters, one Bioshock fan out there was doing something a bit more productive.

While you were all sitting on your couches upgrading your plasmids, crafter Nerdigurumi (I love that name) got out the yarn and crocheted up this awesome little Big Daddy Bouncer in amigurumi form.

Amazingly enough, Mr. Bubbles is made almost entirely from yarn, except for the button portholes adorning his hulking (yet squishy) helmet.

Best of all, Nerdigurumi has been kind enough to share her crochet pattern for the masses out there who populate the intersection of the Venn diagram between crocheters and Bioshock fans.

It looks like there are Big Daddies for all sorts of BioShock fans: cobbled-together Big Daddies, beaded Big Daddies, and even edible Big Daddies (which look great, despite the appetite-killing mental image), and now? A sculpted version. Just keeping things fresh.

Nice work in clay here, with a lot of great detail there on Big Daddy’s head. But, really, I have to ask… where my Little Sisters at? Why is it always Big Daddy in the spotlight? Ol’ Mr. Bubbles always gets all the credit.

This lovely sculpture was given as a gift. I’m not sure what sort of message a Big Daddy conveys. Does it indicate you’re protective? Possibly volatile and deadly? Thick-skinned? Psychologists could have a field day.

Bioshock 2: Big Daddy + Big Sister Art Surfaces

Surprisingly Cuddly Big Daddy Beadcraft

You can say a lot of things about BioShock’s Big Daddies. Cuddly really isn’t on that list; the hulking metal protectors are, in fact, pretty anti-cuddly. But all it takes to soften them up a little, it seems, are a few beads.

deviantARTist l1vethedream reports that the Big Daddy project took a long time, and no wonder–most perler bead craft centers around pixelated images. That means the Big Daddy had to be re-imagined before the project could get underway. The end result is worth the time, though! Now someone just needs to whip up a beaded Little Sister. You know, just to keep him company.

Bioshock’S Big Daddy Gets Bricked

BioShock’s Big Daddies seem to turn up in all sorts of forms. You can make an edible Big Daddy, or hang out with a lifesized Big Daddy, or, if you like the square-headed variety, you can do what this guy did: make a Big Daddy out of LEGOs.

I like this version a lot because it’s faithful while keeping things pretty simple. He’s a little more sinister than some Big Daddies we’ve seen, but still cute enough that you can prop him on your desk and say “awww!” rather than “crap, get it!” That’s always a plus in DIY projects.

With hype slowly amping up for the sequel, we’ll probably see quite a few similar projects over the next year, so I sure hope you’re feeling BioShock-y.

Big Daddy Doll, Straight From the Bioshock 2 Trailer

BioShock 2 doesn’t even exist yet and already the artisans of the world are hard at work on the sequel to 2K’s alternate-history title. A doll fashioned to look like one of the game’s Big Daddy characters was shown in the sequel’s beautiful (and creepy) trailer, and now that same doll has been recreated in loving detail.

How cute! I could almost forget that he probably wants to kill me and just give him a big ol’ squeeze. The best thing? This adorable doll doesn’t include the sense of horror and foreboding I get with the trailer.

Haven’t seen the referenced trailer for BioShock 2? Climb out from under that rock and give it a watch.

Bioshock Life-Sized Big Daddy Up for Auction

Remember those full-scale Big Daddy statues that I told you about a few months back? Well it looks like you can have one of these creepy characters in your own living room if you’re willing to pony up the dough.

There’s currently one of these gargantuan 7′-2″ statues up for bid on the Dutch eBay website. Even though it looks like it weighs a ton, it’s actually only about 100-pounds, so theoretically could be shipped about anywhere if you’re the winner. From what it looks like, the auction is to benefit the World Wildlife Fund, although I was hoping that the money would go towards building a Utopian undersea society instead.

Bioshock Big Daddy Gets Real

If you’re an Xbox 360 fan like me, you’re probably looking forward to the upcoming release of Bioshock. For those of you who unfamiliar with the game, the baddest baddie in the atmospheric thriller is known as “Big Daddy.”

It turns out that there’s now a life-sized replica of the scary creature making the rounds over in the UK.

Spotted “in the wild” by Kotaku reader Kotakuite Tezze, the imposing beast is currently on display at the London gaming shop, GAME. Digging around over on Flickr, I managed to come up with a couple more sightings of the bad-ass boss in other locations…

You definitely wouldn’t want to run into one of these in an alley.
