I consider it extremely wasteful when parents allow their kids to just discard their old stuff even though they’re still working or in good condition, just because they’ve gotten tired of it or bored with its look.

I think it’s a bad idea to cultivate such wasteful attitudes in children, especially when they’re still growing up. Not only that, but it would also be quite taxing on the environment because a lot of resources actually go into the whole manufacturing and disposal process, even for something as small as a wristwatch.

So the next time your kid asks for a new watch, think about getting them Sprout’s Biodegradable Watch. It’s not for boys, that’s for sure, because it features some pretty soft girly tones in the watch face and dial. Splashes of blue, pink, and green decorate Sprout’s timepiece. Even I want it – and I’m already in my early twenties.

The strap on this thing is actually manufactured from organic cotton. The case and buckle? That’s biodegradable corn resin. The watch also features a dial that’s made from bamboo and a mineral crystal lens completes the entire eco-friendliness of this thing. At $34 (USD), I think it’s well worth the money.

The Sprout Biodegradable Watch is available from Fred Flare, if you’re interested.

I’m all for recycling and eco-friendly products these days. It doesn’t help that tons of harmful wastes and pollutants are released into the air and the world’s seas every second of every day. And it really just breaks my heart whenever I see photos of sea creatures choking on pieces of plastics or polar bears stuck on a floating chunk of ice as the ice caps continue to melt because of global warming.

I think it sucks that animals have to pay for our human ways (and mistakes.) That said, the Eco Can is a much appreciated welcome change from all the usual polluting stuff that a lot of companies crank out these days.

The reusable Eco Can resembles those one or two aluminum ones that we guzzle every day to get our daily sugar fix, but without the added pollution: it’s made from PLA, which is a type of corn starch, so it’s also biodegradable to boot. It also features a screw top lid and a ring top style drinking lip so you can enjoy any drink the way you enjoy your regular can of soda. It’s also double-walled, so it keeps your drinks either cool or warm as you like them.

They’re available in four colors: black, red, blue, and green. Blue for water, green for grass, red for the flames for when you burn your waste, and black for the soot and remaining carbon remnants of your burnt up trash. Just sayin’. These Eco Cans are available for £12.99 (appx. $21 USD) each from Firebox.

How happy would you be if your all your stuff kept on eating themselves and consequently disappearing? Like, you build a house, and then one random Tuesday you drive home to a plot of land with all of your belongings on it. Or in the afternoon your pants have eaten its way into shorts, and by the evening you’re ready to go swimming. And your homework! What if your homework ate itself? Atema Architecture certainly thinks that decomposing stuff is an environment-friendly alternative, and has made this auto-cannibalistic table as proof.

The table is made from egg cartons and wheatpaste glue, which is basically flour mixed with water. Then there’s space for plants on the table. The idea is that people will eat on the table, and the plants will eat the table. Seriously. I didn’t know that plants loved egg cartons. Hopefully the table lasts long enough for people to finish eating.

The auto-cannibalistic table was part of the recently concluded InDisposed exhibition in New York city, an exhibit that explored the idea of making disposable items that “have some redeeming social value”, such as a table that eats itself, prompting the owner to buy a new one every 3 weeks, which leads to additional costs, prompting the owner to diet to save enough money to buy another table. I see. It all makes sense now.
