You know me, I’m a pushover for cool digital watch designs – even ones which are just concepts. Often times, concept watches are just too difficult to produce, and that’s why they never make it to market. But here’s a concept design that seems completely feasible, and just looks awesome.

The Nixon Black Diamond watch was designed by Emir Rıfat Işık. While it’s not a real product (as of yet), it sure looks like it would be right at home in Nixon’s modern watch collection.

The watch would feature a bold dot-matrix display (looks like it should be OLED or E-Ink to me), set into a pitch black face. A pyramid-shaped faceted crystal would sit over top, creating cool light-and-shadow effects over the display. The wristband echoes the diamond shapes with its own harlequin embossed pattern as well. About the only thing I don’t care for on this watch is the knob on the side. I get that the pointy shape works with the design, but it’s not a practical shape for gripping with your fingertips, and you’ll probably end up drawing blood at least once grabbing for it.

That aside, I think Emir’s design is quite elegant, and I truly do hope that Nixon looks at the design and calls him up to license it for production. In the mean time, if you like the geometric crystal idea and want a watch you can actually buy, you might want to check out the Nooka Zizm series.

Geneva Lab has just revealed their new Sound System XS, a portable/travel-sized speaker that looks like a retro clamshell alarm clock. This little guy is Bluetooth-compatible, so you’ll be able to send your tunes to it wirelessly.

The XS is also an FM radio and an alarm clock. The 2.1 speaker system has two 1″ tweeters and a 2¼” woofer, which is pretty good for a device of its size. The battery is rechargeable, and you’ll get 5 hours of play time.

If your media player doesn’t support Bluetooth or you just don’t want to waste battery, the XS also has a 3.5mm audio jack.

It weighs 1.1 pounds and measures 6.2″×4″×4.5″. The best part is the discrete LED display that shines through the speaker grille, along with the touch sensitive controls.

It will sell for $250 and is available for pre-order directly from Geneva Lab in black, white or red.

Most all of the gadgets that we have today are glossy on the outside. Many gadgets like smartphones and computers also have glossy screens on the inside. Glossy looks better than matte to most people but glossy surfaces get stained up with smears and fingerprints. Smeared up game consoles and other devices look really nasty to most of us.

If you are thinking about buying a new Xbox 360 Slim console and you actually prefer the glossy version, you’ll need to buy soon. In the next few weeks, Microsoft will retire the glossy finish on normal Xbox consoles and go with a matte surface for all consoles. Right now, only the 4GB version of the console has a matte finish.

Some reports had the glossy consoles being replaced later in the year, but the replacement will begin in the next few weeks. Major Nelson reports that the glossy finish may make its way back for special edition consoles in the future like the Gears of War 3 edition.

In a world where even second graders are already multi-tasking, it’s really no wonder why people continue to invent and come with stuff with dual purposes.

Take, for example, one of the most basic objects that you can find in your home: the clock. Its primary use is obviously just to tell the time and ring out an alarm once a day to get you out of bed. But no, the Bacon Alarm Clock goes a step further by cooking you up some bacon by the way you wake up. The IQ Alarm Clock makes you hurdle through some trivia questions before you can shut the alarm up as a form of brain exercise.

But if you’re in the mood for something simpler and have decorated the rest of your home minimally, then the Poketo! Icon Clock is your perfect match. It has one simple purpose and one use alone: to tell you the time and nothing more. It takes its minimalist theme very seriously; it doesn’t even have the customary numbers printed on its face.

The Icon Clocks come in basic black and classic white and are made from ABS Resin with a diameter of 3.5 in. These simplistic time-tellers are available from Poketo! for $37 (USD).

I have owned watches over the years that have had no numbers, and I always end up telling people “it’s about 4pm” or whatever because without numbers it’s hard to get an exact time. A new clock for your wall has been unveiled in concept for that looks interesting.

Designed by Jay Jiwoong Baek, the Eclipsion clock has no numbers. The hour hand has a large solid circle on it, and the minute hand has a smaller hollow circle on it. The hour hand will eclipse that minute hand each time they pass, hence the name. The clock also has a red dot near the 12 o’clock hour. It’s an interesting design that is visually appealing for sure.

The big downside here is that if you are the sort that needs to know exactly what time it is, the approximate time might now cut it for you. The clock will apparently be produced by a company called Cauca at an undisclosed price. Once released, you’ll be able to get the Eclipsion in either black or white.

At today’s E3 press conference, Microsoft lifted the covers on their greatly-anticipated update to the Xbox 360′s hardware. It’s not called the Xbox 360 Slim as anticipated, rather simple “The New Xbox 360″.

The New Xbox 360 features a smaller case then previous models (it was actually hiding inside an original Xbox 360 case before its reveal today). The new model has a sleek black case, with angular lines more reminiscent of the original Xbox than the 360.

Under the hood, the cooling system has been improved, providing “whisper-quiet” operation. In addition, the hard drive has been amped up to 250GB, and there’s built in 802.11n Wi-Fi (thank god!).

Best of all, the new console will sell for $299 (USD), the same price as the old Elite. Microsoft plans on shipping the New Xbox 360 to retailers starting today (6/14/2010) in North America, so you should be able to pick one up to enjoy this weekend.

Engadget also got their hands on this quick stats sheet in case you’re into those sort of things:

UPDATE: Pre-orders are now open on Amazon (under the old $299 “Elite” SKU).

Nintendo announced this morning that not only are they releasing the elusive black Wii in the United States on May 9th, but that they will also start bundling all sorts of bonus goodies with every Wii they sell.

While pricing will remain at $199.99 (USD) for the Wii, each console will now include Wii Sports Resort and a Wii MotionPlus accessory in every box. That’s in addition to the already included Wii-mote, Nunchuk and Wii Sports in every package. If I’m doing my math right, that’s about a $40 bucks worth of extra schwag with every system. Not too shabby, if you ask me.

The bundle for both the original white Wii will also start showing up in stores on May 9th. Looks like now is a great time to get your hands on a Wii (pun intended) if you don’t have one already, are looking to pick up a gift, or if you just want all of the equipment in your rack to be black.

The guys over at watchmaker Tokyoflash never cease to amaze me with their creative digital watch designs. Their latest concept is the Instant Trend, a timepiece that not only looks cool, but can display text notifications from your mobile phone.

Assuming the watch ever gets made, the Instant Trend would receive instant Twitter and Facebook notifications when paired with your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Messages and time would be displayed on a bright (presumably OLED) blue-on-black dot-matrix display, set into a modern black stainless steel body.

Reading time on the Instant Trend doesn’t have to be as challenging as most Tokyoflash watch displays either. Sure, you can use one mode which tells time using blocks which represent hours, 10 minute intervals, and single minutes. Alternatively, you can view the time with numbers, on a clever multiple time zone display.

As is the case with all of the watches up at the Tokyoflash product design studio, you’ve got to go and cast your vote if you want to see this watch produced. I definitely think this one deserves your support.

We can always count on the guys over at TokyoFlash to come up with new and different ways to tell the time. With their modern approach to product design, they’re now asking shoppers to weigh in on prospective designs before they go ahead and create the real watches. In trolling through the aisles of ToykoFlash’s new product design blog, I came across this one design that really caught my eye.

The Hexagon Art watch features a unique hexagonal display, and would tell time using a series of colorful LED lenses which dot the face of the watch. The watch offers a cool black stainless steel band which mirrors the dotted appearance of the watch face – a really nice design touch for sure.

Time would be shown on the face in the following manner: hours would illuminate in blue, five minute increments in purple, and single minutes would be pink. Without looking at the cheat-sheet below, see if you can figure out what time the watches above are telling you.

While there’s no word on whether or not the Hexagon Art watch will or won’t make the cut to be manufactured, I think it’s definitely one of the best designs out of the bunch (so far). If you want to vote for the Hexagon Art – or any of the other new concept designs, check out the full collection over at the TokyoFlash Design Studio blog.

Here’s a crazy idea for those of you with a sense of the absurd. How’d you like to spend about $800 on a handmade plaster lamp, only to crack it open with a pick axe as soon as you take it out of the box?

That’s exactly the value proposition you’ll get if you pick up artist Jordi Canudas’ Less Lamp. You see, this pendant lighting fixture looks like a solid black hanging egg when you first receive it, letting exactly none of the light out into your room. But thanks to the included pick, you can chip your way through the delicate exterior eggshell and let the light shine out to your own liking.

As a matter of fact, you can start small, cracking out a few tiny pinholes to let the light out. But when you get bored with that, get the pick out again, and really get to work. A tap here and a pick there, et voila – a bright wash of light emerges from the bottom of your once perfect – now cracked – egg.

A couple of years back, the guys over at Yanko Design surfaced this cool watch concept that featured an unusual way of telling time. I’m happy to tell you that the Ora Unica watch has actually made it to market, and it looks awesome.

Designed by Denis Guidone, and produced by Italy’s NAVA Design, the Ora Unica does away with conventional hands, and replaces them with a big squiggly line. The modern, minimal watch is made from stainless steel, and features a mineral glass crystal and a black leather band.

At first glance, you might be confused as to how to tell time on the Ora Unica, but it’s actually quite simple. Just look at the position of the inner end of the squiggle for the current hour, and the outer end for minutes. Simple, elegant, and truly unique. Bravo, Ora Unico!

While this saucer-shaped device might look like something you’d use to hail your alien mothership with, it’s actually got slightly more humble ambitions. The Escape C pod is a wireless gadget that lets you stream stereo audio from your Bluetooth capable MP3 player or mobile phone so you can listen to music and accept phone calls at the same time. The device supports A2DP and AVRCP profiles, and can connect up to 33 feet away from your media player or phone.

The Kisai Escape C features a cool curvy design, covered with tactile control buttons for media playback and accepting calls. It’s idea for the iPhone 3G, 3GS or iPod Touch, but also can be used with programs like Skype on your PC. Of course, it wouldn’t be a ToykoFlash device without some sort of obtuse time-telling feature. So the Escape C offers up some light-up blue LEDs around the perimeter that show the current time. I’ve got no idea how to figure out the time, but isn’t that part of the fun?

Anywho, TokyoFlash hasn’t officially announced a launch date yet, but word on the street is that the Escape C will be released some time in Q1 2010, and will retail for 9,800 yen, (appx. $110 USD). Stay tuned for more details.

This mechanical marvel is not just one of the coolest looking analog watches I’ve seen in a long time, it manages to incorporate something that you don’t often find on a high-end watch – pirates! Arrrrrh!

The H3 Complication Black Pearl edition features an intricate design that lets you see all of the inner workings of the watch as the hours, minutes and days at sea pass you by. The vertically-oriented numbers on the left side may look like the wheel from TPIR’s Showcase Showdown to you, but it actually tells you the current hour. The wheel in the middle that looks like a ship’s engine control shows the minutes.

Designed by Fabrice Gonet, The Black Pearl integrates a number of subtle – and not so subtle – pirate touches, such as a tiny cannon hatch on the left side of the watch, with a skull and bones on it, an more obvious skull and navigational etching on the watch’s see through back.

Word on the street is that only 11 of these bad boys were made, and they sold for about $400,000 a piece. So if you want one of these, you’ll really have to act like a pirate and steal one from its owner.

This modern watch isn’t made out of diamonds, but its face is akin to some kind of cut stone. It’s called the 2Oct2031, presumably because it’s from the future.

The 2Oct2031 watch was created by the Chinese designer Tao Ma, and from the minute you set your eyes on it, you try and make sense of what your eyes are seeing.

Tao Ma was trying to come up with a futuristic luxury watch – a watch could display different information on each of its faceted displays. That’s kind of cool, but you’d need a magnifying glass to see them all, wouldn’t you?

Still, it’s an interesting concept that showcases some neat design ideas. The 2Oct2031 watch isn’t yet available, but it might be sometime between now and October 2, 2031.

NZXT just released their new PC case today, which they want everyone one to call a chassis. It’s called the Hades and aimed at gamers.

Even though it costs about 10 times less than the new Thermaltake Level 10 case designed by BMW, the Hades is no slouch. The case itself is set up for air cooling, but it can easily be used to support water cooling thanks to its pre-drilled bits.

The Hades supports 5 fans and will also fit the new extra-long video cards that are coming out. It includes tray holes and rubber grommets to allow you to manage internal cables easily.

The last PC case that I bought was a brushed aluminum Lanli case in 2006. I like this case, it’s got a bit of Darth Vader in it. The Hades is available from NZXT’s website for $89.99 (USD).

It looks like accessory maker ZooZen are working on a new case for the Xbox 360 which would let you give your 360 a whole new look without ever having to crack open your existing shell.

The guys over at MaxConsole.net got their hands on a leaked video from ZooZen’s R&D department, which shows off the concept design for the Overcase. This unusual case snaps around the front, sides and top of your 360 and converts it into a glossy black beast, complete with bright blue accent lighting and a couple of extra fans to keep things cool. Check out the video clip below to see more of the Overcase…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

What do you guys think? Ugly or beautiful? I know that these days, bigger isn’t really better (except when it comes to flat screen TVs), but I think I like the styling of front of the Overcase better than the bland white shell of a stock 360. That said, it looks like they still have to work out some *minor* details – like how to plug anything into the front USB and Memory Unit ports. I’d also be concerned that the whole thing might overheat, even with the extra fans.

No word on if and when the Overcase will come into the real world, but word on the street is that it will retail for only about $50 (USD), so it might just be worth a try.

No seriously: “Developed and manufactured in Switzerland, the Black Belt Watch is solely reserved for black belt holders, regardless of the martial art style. Each practitioner has to provide an official rank certificate”, otherwise the watch will kill its unworthy owner at the stroke of midnight using deadly watchjutsu. I’m kidding.

The Black Belt watch is water-resistant for up to 100 meters and has a satin-finished, PVD-treated steel case. The sandblasted steel bezel features the Kanji characters for each hour. A black belt adorns the watch’s face, while the minute and hour hands were made to look like Shinai (the wooden bamboo practice swords used in Kendo). The timepiece embodies traditional martial arts values, like Yu (Courage), Meiyo (Honor), and Ramen (Noodles). I’m kidding! Please don’t punch me.

The people behind this ubermacho yet sexy watch are martial artists-turned-watchmakers Claudio Alessi – a “multi style Sensei who is a Mixed Martial Arts instructor” – and tournament-proven karate practitioner Yvan Arpa. What a combo. In making the Black Belt watch, the two martial artists are still fighting the good fight: a percentage of sales from the watch will be donated to the Little Dreams Foundation, which helps youth excel in arts and sports.

The watch can be yours for 500 kicks to the solar plexus dollars. No, of course not; unfortunately not even the official website has the lowdown on the price or the release date of the Black Belt. But you can already pre-order it, just make sure you have a black belt!

At first glance, this looks like any ordinary old wall clock. But take another look, and you’ll see that there’s nothing ordinary about the way that it works.

You see, the hour markers around the perimeter of designer J.P.Meulendijks‘ Chasing Time clock gradually change positions as the minutes pass. It’s designed so every time you look up at the clock, it looks just a little bit different than the last time you looked at it.

At least the clock hands work the way you’d expect, so you can still tell what time it is – even if you are completely hypnotized by the outer moving bits. If you’re looking for something different to hang on your wall you can order the Chasing Time clock from Swedish design shop pid.se for $359 (USD).

Well it’s been a while since I’ve come across any modern lighting that I would actually call “super cool”, but these unique adjustable fixtures definitely deserve their name. So I guess it’s a good thing that they’re named these lamps Supercool.

Designed by Germany’s hansandfranz for Macrolux, the Supercool lamp features a dynamic, adjustable structure that lets it fit just about anywhere. The structure of each Supercool lamp is based on a telescoping aluminum pole that can be set to a wide variety of heights and angles with ease.

Not only can you adjust the height and move the lighting bar up and down the pole, but you can rotate the lighting reflector a full 360-degrees. And thanks to a bright grid of LEDs, these lights cast a wonderful modern accent on your walls, while requiring little power and never needing their bulbs to be changed.

No word on pricing, but like most uber-modern lighting fixtures, I’m going to guess they’re not cheap. You can find more information on the Supercool lamps over at MacroLux.
