My dad loved his old, ratty couch to pieces. It was the one he sat on for all those Super Bowl games and NBA Finals through the years, and it showed. My mom was always ragging on him to either throw it out or get it upholstered, and he obviously chose the latter. Something went horribly wrong at the upholsterers’ and the couch ended up getting ruined.

He has since gotten a new couch, but my mom keeps her mouth shut about it nowadays. But anyway, had he waited a few more years, he probably wouldn’t have had to go and get it upholstered because he could have just painted over it instead with one of these Simply Spray Fabric Paints. And it’s appropriately called the Upholstery Paint.

But there’s more to the Simply Spray line than meets the eye. Aside from the basic fabric paints, there’s also the Stencil Spray, Paint It Black, Puff Paint, and even Spray Blood.

The Stencil Spray boasts that it looks like a silkscreen, while Paint It Black turns your once-black clothing items back to, well, black. Spray Blood is (obviously) spray-on blood, while my favorite of the bunch is Puff Paint, where the paint sort of puffs up when you heat it with a dryer.

You can get all of the Simply Spray paint sprays online from SprayPaint4Fabric and Fabric Spray Paint.

The gang over at Withings is all about using tech and gadgets to help people stay fit and healthy. These folks have that scale that interfaces with the iPhone, tracks your weight, and will tweet your weight if you want it to. The latest medical gadget from Withings is for the iPhone and makes it easy to monitor your blood pressure.

There are lots of folks out there with high blood pressure that have to keep a close eye on their readings and the Withings Blood Pressure monitor will make that easy. The device works with the iPhone, plugs into the bottom of the iPhone into the sync port, and stores readings from the special cuff to an app running on the device.

The cuff has a small pump that does all of the inflating and deflating for the user so all they need to do is sit still. The device will also share the readings on Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault for archiving and sharing with care providers. The system will sell for about $129 (USD) and will ship later this month.

I loves me some ooey-gooey Alien Chestbursters, and I certainly enjoy the occasional PS3 game. This over-the-top casemod combines both.

Modder GivinTats originally did another Alien casemod a while back, and then had someone reach out to him to make a custom mod featuring a gory Chestburster pushing its way out of the side of a poor old 1st gen PlayStation 3.

Since the original movie Chestburster is said to assimilate some traits of its host, GivinTats decided to make him a bit of an alien cyborg instead of a straight-up organic creature. Check out the blood, guts and parts spraying forth from the side of the PS3. Yummy. The broken circuit board coming out of the cracked open case carcass is an especially nice touch – although it would suck if that were the actual circuitry from the PS3 itself.

First we had artificial pork, and now we have artificial blood. Scientist Samir Mitragotri and his colleagues have successfully created artificial red blood cells using biodegradable polymer molds. The lab-made cells are of the same size and shape as the real deal, and are also elastic enough that they can squeeze into passageways tinier than their diameter. But most blood-like of all, the synthetic cells can soak up hemoglobin and release it later. Wow. Truly the work of Class-S nerds.

Mitragori and his colleagues are already looking at various applications for their creation, including using it as a means of delivering medicine through our body, although they’ve yet to conduct human trials. Will vampires be able to tell the difference between fake blood and real blood? Or will an enterprising vampire soon come up with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Blood! ?

This Xbox 360 faceplate isn’t actually bloody (I hope!), but it is certainly evocative of the horror of a zombie apocalypse–something that is becoming a more and more common experience with Xbox games every day. Seems like zombies are everywhere lately, bursting out of zombie games and invading everything else. Like this faceplate.

This particular custom faceplate looks pretty simple, right? I’m sure you’re scoffing, thinking, “I could do that.” And if you’re one of the lucky artistic ones, I’m sure you could! So long as you’re willing to get red paint all over your fingers (ew). But man, I’ve seen some really atrocious custom paint attempts that have ruined consoles before, so may I advise using a cheap faceplate if you try it, and maybe having a backup on hand?

If you’re less adventurous, you can pick this one up at Etsy for $18. The Argenta Collaborative store is filled with other goodies, too, like awesome retro perler bead magnets.

It’s Strange & Wonderful Wednesday, and as I was perusing the offerings of the Internet I came upon Gerard Vlemmings’ – aka The Presurfer – link to an article on blogbits about weird cameras. They were weird alright: there was an 18-carat gold plated Pentax LX and even a pistol-shaped camera. But the article promised that the last ones on the list would leave me stunned. And man was I stu-freakin-nned. The last cameras on the list were made by American artist Wayne Martin Belger. The aesthetics of the cameras are no doubt unique, but what cranks up the weird to 11 are the materials that they’re made of. So what were those cameras? See for yourself:

That’s the Third Eye camera. Belger says that he made it “to study the beauty of decay.” It’s made of Aluminium, Titanium, Brass, Silver, and gem stones. And a 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl.

Next up we have the Untouchable. Belger used it to take pictures of people suffering from HIV. Like the Third Eye, the Untouchable is made of several metals, plus HIV positive blood. The uh, blood serves as his red filter. Can’t make this stuff up.

The last camera that I’m sharing with you isn’t on the blogbits list; it’s called the Heart. Belger says that he designed it to take pictures of pregnant women who are at least 8 months pregnant, as well as to study his “relationship” with his twin brother, who unfortunately died at birth. So of course the camera is made of Aluminium, Titanium, Acrylic, Formaldehyde and an infant human heart.

Those of you who know their Photography may have deduced from the pictures that Belger’s creations are all pinhole cameras. Belger says that he prefers pinhole photography because of the unadulterated interaction between the camera and the subject. He designs his cameras with this same goal in mind, of wanting to study and relate to his subject.

Check out Belger’s site for more of his wonderfully weird artwork, along with sample photographs taken using each camera; read Belger’s statement regarding his work if you want to get a better grasp of his art. Me, I think I’m going to have to watch SpongeBob or something, or I might have trouble sleeping.

BLOOD Energy Potion looks just like an IV transfusion bag, but is actually a drinkable concoction loaded with sweet fruit punch flavored energy drink. I love this part of the product description: “Not only does Blood Energy Potion have a similar nutritional makeup to real blood, but it has the same color, look, and consistency of blood. Get real blood nutrients without that real blood taste!” My only question is why it can’t taste like real blood? C’mon.

Unfortunately, if you’re hoping to serve some of this at your Halloween party, you’ll have to wait until next year since this stuff isn’t available until January. You can pre-order individual bags of BLOOD over at Urban Collector for $5.99 (USD) – or get a 48 pack for $191.92 which works out to be $3.99 a bag. Vampire Bill would be proud.

Remember how in Wall-E how the humans got so lazy that they left everything in the hands of robots? Seems some people need to watch – or re-watch – that awesome movie, because it seems that we’re just looking for excuses to build a robot. Case in point: the Bloodbot, a horribly misnamed medical robot designed by researchers at the equally creepily named Imperial College London. The idea behind Bloodbot? Automate the process of taking blood samples, an activity that takes no longer than 30 seconds. Have nurses and doctors become terrible at doing this? I don’t think accuracy is the issue here. But I’m no visionary, so I’ll just accept the possibility that we’ll have large scale blood samplings in the future and so we’ll need a roomful of Bloodbots to do it.

Some of you may not see anything wrong with the idea behind this automated stabber. Well then let’s look at how it works: the Bloodbot is able to select a suitable vein – one that is close to the surface of the skin – from which to draw blood from by pressing a probe onto a patient’s arm. Using mathemagics, the robot is able to detect the unlucky blood vessel and then inserts the needle under what the EMPIRE Imperial College London calls – I shit you not – “force control”.

Really though it’s just a fancy way of saying that the Bloodbot can sense the force that a patient’s skin is exerting on the needle. As the graph above shows – and as common sense dictates – our skin resists the needle somewhat at first, but since the Bloodbot is hellbent on stabbing you it will keep on piercing the skin. As soon as the robot’s needle pierces our skin, the force that our relatively tough skin exerts on the needle is gone, replaced by the weaker force from our blood. The robot (hopefully) detects this drop in force and stops inserting the needle so as not to run you straight through. The temptation is still there though. Now consider this: at any given moment there are millions of people who are eating and/or drinking. That’s a massive enough scale right? Do you think we need Foodbots and Drinkbots? They’ll surely save us a lot of time and energy.

The bloody hand of Left 4 Dead is one of those images that sticks out–partially, I’m sure, because of the wonderful atmosphere of the game itself, in which those bloody handprints are so often wielded to chilling effect. That means it also makes a perfect icon to serve as the centerpiece of a custom Xbox 360.

This custom ‘box is the work of one friend for another. How’s that for teamwork? Better than crouching together on a counter in a bathroom while zombies descend upon you and your pals, that’s for sure.

Nice glow, but I wonder if it’s distracting during game time?

deviantART member FatalJapan, for whom this case was made, mentions in the description that some of the requested details got left out of the finished product. To FatalJapan’s friend, I say this: if you want to make one of these for me, free of charge (as this one was!), then I promise to do nothing but praise you afterward… and I praise with cookies.

Been dying to do over your bathroom decor with a Hitchcockian theme? Well I can think of no better place to start than with these accessories.

Imagine the surprise of your roommate when they wake up tomorrow morning to find this Blood Bath shower curtain hanging in place of the old one. Whether they think Anthony Perkins came back to life to stab you to death or there was a midnight zombie attack, who cares? Either way, it’s bound to provoke a reaction.

To complete the effect, be sure to mix up some Karo syrup and red food coloring and splatter some down in the drain. Maybe a few drips on the floor, leading to the toilet too. If you’d rather save yourself the mess, you could also pick up this matching bloody bath mat.

The guys over at UK gift maker SpinningHat came up with these sick and twisted things, and I love them for it. I found the shower curtain over at ParamountZone for just £8.99 (appx. $13 USD) – but there’s no word on when they’ll start stocking the matching bath mat.

After a brief shot at being practical and ingenious, the Japanese are back to being weird again with this morbid and messy yet minimalist lamp from DCS Corp:

Designed by Kouichi Okamoto, the Liquid Lamp is made of steel and comes equipped with a 25-watt bulb. The puddle of red stuff is actually the lamp’s stand, so from a distance it looks like the lamp is floating. A wall mounted version is also available:

Nice. I wonder if the red dots also come with the lamp. If the red liquid creeps you out, then you’ll prefer the (grayish) white version:

The liquid lamp is available at Japanese design shop caina. The red liquid lamp sells for 23,100 yen ($262 USD); the white version is cheaper at 19,950 yen ($227 USD).

Artist Keetra Dean Dixon made these limited-edition “Great Slumber” pillows a while back, and I don’t think you could get her to make you one before tomorrow. But there’s no reason you can’t run to the fabric store, grab some red velvet, and stitch one together for your Halloween festivities. (Unless of course, you can’t sew, in which case you’re S.O.L.)

Hitachi has taken the wraps off of a new payment technology that lets you make purchases with only your finger.

The new biometric system can measure the unique signature of the blood vessels in your fingers to authenticate transactions. Once you register your “vein signature” with your credit card company, your vascular pattern is the key to unlocking your funds.

Hitachi plans on starting to test their Finger Vein Technology in real world applications this Fall, using 200 of their employees. They’ll be able to purchase items at the company’s corporate shops and cafeteria using the new payment tech.

All in all, the premise of payment authentication systems which don’t rely on simple numbers and key codes seems like a really good idea to me. I’d have to think it would be a lot harder to copy someone’s blood vessels than their credit card number.
