A while back we reported that Ricoh was working on a optical mechanism that could handle both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. At next week’s CES show, it’s expected that two companies will be showing off their proposed solutions to dealing with the incompatible formats.
On the hardware front, LG is expected to announce a combo player that can play both formats…

While using a small amount of hard disk space to cache a portion of game content is a trick long used by the Xbox 360 and pretty much all PC games, it’s been revealed that some PS3 games would be using a very significant portion of the console’s hard drive to speed performance…

In another blow to Sony’s floundering Blu-Ray format, Universal Pictures has announced that it will be dropping support for the disc format. For the forseaable future, the will solely release high definition discs in HD-DVD format.
With all of the problems with Blu-Ray laser supplies affecting the PS3 launch, I’m beginning to think Sony’s got another Betamax on their hands…

The headline says it all. According to Sony’s European website the PS3 has been delayed until March 2007 in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia. Launch date remains November 17, 2006 for North America and Japan, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that date slip given Sony’s recent track record…
