Have you ever wanted to share audio from your mobile device, but found that the internal speakers were too weak? Here’s a way to improve your sound without lugging around something that’s too heavy. The Zooka portable speaker was created by the design studio New and it might be the perfect solution for tablet-wielding road warriors.

Zooka works with tablets, smartphones, laptops and media players. It’s made out of silicone and will outdo the volume of built-in speakers by as much as five times. The good thing is that Zooka connected wirelessly via Bluetooth to your mobile device. Devices that don’t have Bluetooth connectivity can be manually plugged in via the 3.5mm audio jack. The silicone-covered speaker also has a convenient slot cut into it, which is the perfect size for sliding tablets into.

The speaker charges through a mini USB port and a full charge will give you 8 hours of media playback. It comes in seven different colors, with more on the way once it’s released.

The Zooka is currently raising funds over on Kickstarter and it’s aiming for an August release. You’ll need to pledge at least $89(USD) to get one, which is a discount off of the proposed retail price of $119.

When I was about 10 years old, my parents took my brother and I skiing in New Mexico. I remember thinking it was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done, right up until I wiped out and rolled halfway down the slope where I ended up with snow neatly packed into my pants. It wasn’t so much fun after that. I might go back again someday, but I’ll need some assurances that should my leg snap in half for any reason or a giant avalanche come my way, someone can hear my pitiful, girlish screams and come help.

I think the perfect thing to assure that assistance would arrive is these Buhel Speakgoggle G33 Intercom goggles.

The goggles are designed to keep the snow and glare away, and to keep your eyes nice and safe from tree limbs and the flailing ski poles of the people nearby. But the real differentiator in this particular pair goggles is the integrated Bluetooth headset, which pairs with your smartphone so you can answer voice calls and control your music playback.

The cooler feature for me is that even without having a smartphone, these goggles have an intercom function that will allow you to talk to six other people wearing them at the same time. The microphone the goggles have uses bone conduction technology for clear audio even when you’re flying down the slopes.

I think between six people, someone would be able to come and pry me off the tree I ran into.

Back in October we mentioned the awesome Recon-Zeal goggles that were available that have a small heads-up LCD that displays pertinent stats when you view it. The goggles show you things like your speed down a slope, altitude, GPS coordinates, and a lot more.

Recon has just announced a new feature of their MOD Live module (their heads-up display add-on for various goggles) that is very cool. The company teamed up with Contour, the company that makes some rugged sports cameras. With the new feature, MOD Live-equipped goggles can now be used as the viewfinder for Contour action cameras.

The goggles will link to the camera using Bluetooth, showing you what you have recorded, and allow you to be sure your camera is aimed correctly. The system supports the ContourGPS and Contour+ cameras, which both have Bluetooth. The cameras offer HD recording and can survive the inevitable falls spills and wet weather.

Of course, all this cool tech does come with a price tag attached – The Recon Instruments MOD Live display sells for about $400(USD), while compatible Contour cameras sell for $300 to $500 each.

…or tablet or PC or any other Bluetooth-enabled device that supports A2DP. Developed by ZMote, the Smart Cord is a 3-f00t long extension cord with an on-and-off switch that is activated via an app or audio file, both of which are free. All you have to do is insert the Smart Cord in between any device – maybe even several devices plugged into a power strip – and the outlet, and you can cut power to it remotely, up to 30 feet away.

ZMote will soon release a variety of related products, such as a separate switch, a dimmable switch, as well as a lamp and upright lights. ZMote is going to make home automation – and pranks – a lot easier and cheaper.

They say the Smart Cord will go on sale later this month for $40 (USD). I hope by that time they’ve worked on their website – which looks sort of like something out of 1994.

I used to get so mad at people I was with who would park their car and then forget where they parked. But I can understand it in some instances. I once lost my car at a NHRA national’s event. When I arrived at the venue, I thought I was a mile from the place and it couldn’t get any worse for parking. I was so wrong, by time I left there were literally a hundred acres of cars and I thought I’d never find my ride.

If you have the issue of losing your car a lot, hit Kickstarter and check out the new Find My Car Smart app and hardware combo. Together, they will tell you where you parked, how far you are away, and how long the car was there. While there are already apps which remind you where you parked, you don’t have to remember to activate this one. The dongle works its magic by detecting when you power down the car and automatically tells your iPhone to make a notation using its GPS sensor. The Smart dongle for your car communicates with your iPhone 4S using the new low-power Bluetooth 4.0 standard. According to its maker, this is the first app to use Bluetooth 4.0.

The app is on the iTunes App Store already, but the hardware part isn’t shipping quite yet. A pledge of $25 will get you the dongle and the app, while a pledge of $30 or more you get the app, dongle, and a car USB charger to keep it powered up, in case your car doesn’t already have a USB port. Find My Car Smart expects to start shipping the first of the devices in late January 2012.

I think people have enough driving distractions already, with all the gadgets and monitors and screens on every car’s dashboard these days. But the people behind the Bluetooth Rearview Mirror want to add another one with their all-in-one rearview mirror.

This Bluetooth Rearview Mirror Kit is available from Chinavasion for around $200 (USD). It seems like a pretty hefty price to pay for a rearview mirror, but that’s because (and I’m just stating the obvious here) it’s not just an ordinary rearview mirror.

In fact, it’s a touchscreen GPS, DVR, wireless camera, media and game player rolled into one pretty package.

Aside from that, it’s also a hands-free speakerphone and a wireless rearview parking camera to help you ease into those hard-to-park areas.

So really, what more can you ask for in a rearview mirror? With this baby, you can navigate through tight roads, listen to your favorite tunes, catch a quick flick in traffic, play a few games when you’re bored, and even use it to speak to the 911 operator when you’ve driven yourself into a ditch by the road because of previously-mentioned activities.

It definitely makes sense to have a watch that can sync with your smartphone, especially if you’re busy or have to drive everywhere. What I like about these types of watches is that they allow you to get info from your phone without taking it out of your pocket.

The Casio G-Shock GB-9600 was designed to sync with your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0. The watch will let you know about incoming calls, messages, and emails. The phone is water- and dust-proof. It comes with a 4-inch OLED screen. In the demo video, it’s shown syncing with the new NEC Medias PP N-01D Android smartphone, but it’s not clear if it works with other Bluetooth 4.0 phones, like the iPhone as well. I would hope so.

Of course, the watch offers the time, stopwatch and alarm features of standard G-Shock watches. It sells in black, white or red for ¥18,000 to ¥19,000 (~$230-245 USD).

Geneva Lab has just revealed their new Sound System XS, a portable/travel-sized speaker that looks like a retro clamshell alarm clock. This little guy is Bluetooth-compatible, so you’ll be able to send your tunes to it wirelessly.

The XS is also an FM radio and an alarm clock. The 2.1 speaker system has two 1″ tweeters and a 2¼” woofer, which is pretty good for a device of its size. The battery is rechargeable, and you’ll get 5 hours of play time.

If your media player doesn’t support Bluetooth or you just don’t want to waste battery, the XS also has a 3.5mm audio jack.

It weighs 1.1 pounds and measures 6.2″×4″×4.5″. The best part is the discrete LED display that shines through the speaker grille, along with the touch sensitive controls.

It will sell for $250 and is available for pre-order directly from Geneva Lab in black, white or red.

The two most popular mobile operating systems out there are Android and iOS. When it comes to accessories, iOS is still the most popular though. There aren’t nearly as many accessories for the Android users out there as there are for the iPhone at this point. Griffin has launched an update to their Beacon universal remote control device, which makes it compatible with Android tablets and smartphones.

Beacon for Android uses hardware and an app to control your home entertainment system. The hardware part connects wirelessly to your tablet or smartphone using Bluetooth. It then turns the BT commands your phone sends out into IR commands your home theater gear can understand. The app has a database of 200,000 devices that it can control, and also has an integrated guide that tells you more about the programs and tells you what is on.

You can buy Beacon for either Android or iOS now for $69.99 (USD) over at the Griffin website.

If you’re actually trying to get some work done on your tablet or phone, instead of just consuming media, then you most likely need a keyboard. It’s either that, or switch out your tablet for a MacBook Air or netbook. The Rapoo E6300 Ultra-Thin Bluetooth Keyboard is quite thin and compact.

At just 0.22″ thick, it’s supposed to be the world’s thinnest keyboard, but that’s not quite true since the Hatch & Co. SKINNY is only 0.07″ thick. Still, it’s probably a bit more comfortable to use, since they’re actual keys, and not touch-sensitive like the SKINNY.

The E6300 keyboard measures just about 3.1″ × 8.1″, so it’s quite compact. The Rapoo’s keyboard is rechargeable with a charge lasting up to a month.

It was designed to work well with iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth, and you can get one for $39.99 (USD) over at Focalprice.

Let’s be honest, transforming your iPad into a netbook with a somewhat bulky Bluetooth keyboard seems a bit like a paradox; the whole reason why the iPad 2 is so easy to carry around is that it’s extremely light and you can still use it for a variety of purposes. This new keyboard case from Hatch & Co. is called SKINNY and it’s not bulky at all.

The SKINNY case is made from faux leather, and integrates the world’s slimmest and lightest iPad 2 keyboard. At least, that’s what the company claims. The keyboard is 0.07 inches thick. It only weighs 10.4 ounces, so your iPad will stay light and thin. It even integrates a trigger to automatically sleep and wake your iPad, just like Apple’s Smart Cover.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Instead of chiclet-style keys, you’ll find ultra-thin touch keys with a slight tactile edge, so I don’t know how good these are for touch-typing, and if they’re really going to be an improvement over the on-screen keyboard. Though it will save you screen real-estate while typing, and it is spill-proof. The keyboard’s battery is good enough for 68 hours of continuous use and it can be charged up via USB in two hours.

You can get the SKINNY case over at Amazon for $89.99 (USD), and is available in either black with grey keys or white with brown keys (reminiscent of the old Atari 400).

Tablets are fantastic little devices, and you can certainly replace your notebook with one if you want to for light word processing and general computer work. The fact is that for most of us, the on-screen keyboard really sucks. You can get a variety of different keyboards that will work with most of the tablets on the market today.

If you use an Android tablet, you can get the new LuxePad A9000 from Genius that is made specifically for the Android tablets out there. The new keyboard is aimed at Android 3.0 tablets and connects using Bluetooth. It has a scissor style key system that has smooth presses and a solid tactile feel.

That should mean you could type like the wind on your tablet for typing out documents or emails. The keyboard only supports Android 3.0 so don’t think you are going to share this around with your iPad pals (you’ll need to grab the iOS-specific LuxePad 9000 for that). It has batteries included and sips power according to Genius so it should last a good long while. It does have keys on it for your Android tablet commands too. The LuxePad A9000 will sell for about $60 (USD).

The handset looks pretty svelte and minimal, so it’s something you’d want to showcase in your home. The handset itself offers a wireless connection, and can be paired with two devices at the same time, so you can use it with your iPhone and your PC for Skype calls if you want.

It also acts as a charging dock for your iPhone, which is a nice touch. The Moshi Moshi 03 handset/dock comes in black or white and sells for €149 (~$204 USD) over at Discovery 24 [DE].

If you’re looking for a keyboard you can use with your iPad or other mobile gadget, but hate the idea of keyboards which can accidentally turn on and waste battery while in your bag, you might want to check out this invention.

Designed by James Stumpf of ENTERAX, the Levitatr is an aluminum Bluetooth keyboard which offers a unique innovation – elevating keys. That is, when the keyboard isn’t in use, the keycaps retract flat into its face. When you want to type, just press a button and the keys pop up and backlighting turns on.

The retractable keys should also keep crumbs from getting stuck between keys too, and I know how often you’re sitting at the Starbucks chomping on a scone while you type, right?

Despite being a little thicker than I’d like it to be, it’s still pretty slim at just 12.5mm thick, and the Levitatr sports a slick machined anodized aluminum chassis, with a glossy black polycarbonate face. The Levitatr also has a nifty built-in kickstand, perfect for supporting your tablet or other gadget at angels from 20 to 30 degrees.

At this point, the Levitatr is in the latter phases of prototyping, and will need your backing to get into production. James is currently raising funds over on Kickstarter, and a pledge of $79(USD) or more will get you one of the Levitatr keyboards should the project hit its goal of $60,000 in the next 41 days. Higher pledges will get you a special limited-edition version, or multiple keyboards to share with your friends.

Maybe James can use a little bit of the funds he raises to get a better microphone for the next time he shoots a promotional video.

Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard: Transforming Your iPad 2 in Style

Logitech has just announced another Bluetooth keyboard for the iPad. It’s called the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard, and I like it mainly because it folds up and tucks underneath your iPad 2. The only question now is do you want this one or the Logitech Keyboard Case? Each has its own advantages.

Unlike the Keyboard Case, the Fold-Up Keyboard doesn’t double as a case since it stays attached to the bottom of your iPad 2. On the other hand, it is compatible with Apple’s Smart Cover for protecting the screen. Once opened up, this keyboard is actually bigger than the one from the Keyboard Case, which is something that’s necessary if you use your iPad a lot to type stuff up. The keyboard is actually full-sized, but that means the whole thing isn’t as clean-looking or thin as the Keyboard Case.

It could make life easier in class or at work, if you use your iPad as a mobile workstation of sorts. The bad part is that it doesn’t double as a case for your iPad and it’s somewhat bulky. Logitech sells the Fold-Up Keyboard for $129.99 (USD).

The watch allows users to write text messages, email, tweet, check up on Facebook status updates, etc. You can even make and receive phone calls, thanks to the built-in speaker.
It comes in two flavors, the I’m Color series in red, yellow, blue green, pink, black and white which will sell for €249 (~$354 USD), while the slightly more ridiculous I’m Jewel series comes in gold, pink gold, white gold, titanium, or encrusted with diamonds for €600 to €15,000 (~$853 to $21,325 USD).

The never ending progress of technology has revolutionized many industries. It empowers individuals both in work and in play, giving us tools for productivity, production and distribution that were previously only at the disposal of institutions with considerable resources. For example, thanks to the Web and other technologies, literally anyone – for better or for worse – can be a one-man news channel, sharing data and opinions at low cost. Lee Jung Hoon’s concept device can extend this empowerment further.

Lee Jung Hoon calls his concept the On Air Cam. It’s a Web-connected video camera that not only captures video but can upload or stream the footage live via Wi-Fi, 3G or Bluetooth. Since the On Air Cam already has an OLED screen that can be used to view what’s being shot, Lee sacrificed the viewfinder and designed a second camera in its place. This allows the user to superimpose his face – or whatever he wants to shoot behind the camera – on the footage, similar to what news outfits do. It also makes it easier to record oneself, because the second camera and the OLED screen are facing the same side.

I’m no expert but I think it’s just a matter of time before something like the On Air Cam is actually produced. For all I know today’s smartphones may already be powerful enough to do this. A device like the On Air Cam will make it even easier to share events from the real world because it bypasses the process of uploading the footage to a computer before it gets to the Web – and perhaps more importantly, bypass anyone who may want to censor the information, just like what people are doing now on sites like LiveLeak, Twitter and YouTube.

But at the same time, if the On Air Cam did exist, I’m sure that there’ll be an exponential rise in the amount of narcissistic, poorly shot or overall worthless videos on the Web, crap that gets stored on servers, that use up drive space and electricity while contributing nothing useful. But that’s not the gadget’s fault is it? Check out Lee Jung Hoon’s portfolio on Coroflot to see his other designs.

This nifty new portable speaker from Nokia was launched along with their N9 smartphone, and the Nokia Play 360° can start play immediately once it’s ‘bumped’ by NFC-enabled devices (Near Field Communications). It also works with Bluetooth and the name comes from its 360-degree omni-directional sound.

The speaker itself looks quite good. If there are more than one of these around, they’ll start booming out in stereo, which is a cool trick. They weigh 18 ounces each, so they’re reasonably light and portable (4.3″×4.3″×4.9″).

The speaker itself can be charged via a microUSB port. A complete charge of 3 hours should last just over 20 hours of play time. In addition to wireless audio, they come with a 3.5mm audio jack as well.

Each of these speakers will cost you €149 (~$213 USD), so they don’t come cheap. They’ll ship in Q3 of this year. Well, they might work well, but a pair of these would set you back almost enough to purchase a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin dock (!).
