You know me. Just slap a TARDIS on pretty much anything, and I think it’s cool. But this particular TARDIS is one of my favorite builds in a while. It’s a full-size bookcase made in the form of a TARDIS.

It was built by UK model-maker msmuse101 – with the help of her Dad – over the last few months, and it really looks great. When closed, it looks just like the iconic blue police box, but when the doors opened up, it conceals eight shelves for books – or in msmuse’s case – her DVD collection.

Unfortunately, she didn’t capture any photos during construction, nor any directions for making your own, but that’s okay. How many of you were really going to run out and start building one tonight anyhow? Check out more photos and discussion about the Tardis Bookcase over at The RPF. Great job, msmuse101 (and Dad!)

Ifsodoso’s Long Form Library is kind of amazing. It’s a self-contained library and reading nook, all in one. However, it’s quite large so it won’t fit in many places. The Long Form Library can store up to 400 books or a variety of CDs or other items, encircling its occupant in its center ring. It’s also got built-in accent lighting and reading lights.

Unfortunately, it would be challenging in most homes to find enough place for this gargantuan piece of furniture. That and the $9,500 (USD) price tag make it something best left for people with lots of money and lots of space. It’s sad though, because I would have loved to have something like this in my house. Thankfully, the self-contained library has individual modules that will fit through standard doors.

The Long Form library is supposed to rock gently to and fro, but not supposed to tip over. Still, it might be dangerous for people with pets and kids. It’s also currently a one-off handmade product, so first-come, first-served. Naturally, shipping something like this can be quite problematic, and shipping will add another $500 to the price, making it a cool $10,000 purchase. This would be a good example of a product that could be simply sold as plans on Etsy.

We live in a world that continuously strives for order and arrangement. We found some elements and decided to arrange them according to their properties in the table of elements. We discovered numbers and put them in increasing order from 1 to a billion of a zillion.

So you might wonder where this totally random bookcase would find its place in this same ordered world. An ordered kind of random, that is.

How about my study? I don’t know about you, but the first thing I thought when I saw this was, “Wow, this a pretty hot mess.” And I mean that in every literal sense of the word.

The Random Bookcase is made from MD wood fiberboards and painted in matte white. I love how ordered and disorganized the whole thing looks at the same time. In my book, “random” usually translates to “messy” and “disheveled,” but this bookcase totally goes against the definition of the word.

Go wild, live a little, and be more random. You can start with your bookcase. These bookshelves are available from Made In Design and carry a hefty price tag of £1,629.00 (~$2,650 USD.)

Actually, the Modular Speaker Double Shelf is actually a pretty clever idea, combining both a sound system and a storage unit into a single piece of furniture. Just hang it on your wall, hook up your MP3 player and you’ll be cranking out the tunes. The $129 shelving unit measures in at 36″(w) x 13″(h) x 6″ (d) and comes in both white and blue finishes.

In addition to the requisite AM/FM/CD/MP3 capabilities, the Philips BTM288 stereo system will be able to connect to mobile phones and media devices via Bluetooth. According to a snippet from the draft User Manual, the stereo will allow both speakerphone calling and wireless audio playback from connected devices.

I really like the simple colorful design of these compact music systems from Germany’s Sonoro Audio.

The Sonoro Cubo is a compact, all-in-one sound system, complete with FM radio, CD player and auxiliary input for your portable media player. Each one is encased in a wooden enclosure with either a colored lacquer or natural wood finish. They come in a variety of colors, and make a dramatic statement on any bookshelf.

The one thing that I don’t care for is the fact that there’s only a single speaker in the Cubo. While it’s got a bass-reflex design to enhance the low-end, don’t expect there to be any sort of meaningful sound field coming out of it.

Cubo sound systems retail for about €255 (around $349 USD.) They currently only come with a European power supply, so you’ll need a converter if you want to use on in the US or Japan.

Who says that speakers need to be boxy to sound good? With the release of their new Drop speakers, Spain’s Scandyna certainly disagrees.

Looking like something out of an alien civilization, The Drop speakers are designed for those who like their speakers to make a bold visual statement. But these don’t just look good, each speaker is designed to handle up to 100 watts of power. Sensitivity is rated at 89dB, with frequency response is rated at -6dB at 50Hz and 22kHz. While they certainly don’t hit the very deepest frequencies, you can always pick up a subwoofer if you need that extra boom.

Measuring in around 20-inches high, their funky colored cabinets are custom molded from ABS (the same stuff is used to make Lego blocks and some tattoo inks.) Thanks to their hard plastic shells, they come color-infused in white, black, silver, blue, yellow or red. The Drop speakers retail for £549 (appx. $1095 USD) per pair.

Looking for a bookshelf speaker system for your digital music player that doesn’t suck? Audioengine’s Speaker System 5 has the specs and looks of a true audiophile speaker system but costs just $349, including free shipping.

The bookshelf speaker system features two powered speakers with a built-in amplifier with a solid 45W RMS (70W Peak) power per channel. The speakers offer frequency response from 60Hz-22kHz +/-1.5dB, so don’t expect big bass, but do expect excellent music reproduction.

The cabinets are handmade made from 1″ thick MDF and include thoughtful features like rounded edges to reduce high frequency diffraction. Each speaker has a 20mm silk dome tweeter with Neodymium magnets and a 5″ Kevlar woven glass woofer.

The system features a USB charging connector which is compatible with most USB “bus-powered” devices, including 4G and newer iPods. Keep in mind that the USB port is not for connectivity, just charging. Audio is fed through one of two 1/8-inch mini stereo jacks. The system also includes a thoughtful array of accessories, including cables, speaker wire and foam pads for sonic isolation.
