Maybe it’s because they’re both sort of geeky, but I think that LEGOs and iPhones go well together. I suppose that is why Brando has just released these LEGO-inspired cases that will work with the iPhone 4 and 4S. The only problem is that you can’t accessorize your case by adding more LEGO bricks.

The Brick case is made out of rubberized plastic, and looks like it would be quite grippy in your hands. The back of the case hase two removable block sections, which help manage headphone wires or protect your camera lens.

This case is available from Brando for just $9.90 (USD), and it’s available in 10 different colors. At that price you won’t feel bad picking one as a stocking stuffer.

This amazing life-sized Gears of Wars Lancer assault rifle is entirely made out of LEGOs, and it was made by PLUM B. The looks alone set it apart from other rifles I’ve seen, but that’s not all. This rifle features a clip-fed firing mechanism that shoots rubber bands. That probably won’t help you survive against the Locust horde, but it will sure allow you to have some fun.

This is definitely the most realistic LEGO Lancer assault rifle I have seen. That’s probably because it’s the only one, but still, it looks awesome. Even the chainsaw at the front of the rifle is motorized. The rifle has a select fire mode, either semi-auto, full auto, or safe.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You could probably use this LEGO rifle to do some Gears of Wars LARPing, although I have trouble imagining the plot of something like that.

I see all sorts of cool projects that geeks come up with where they use LEGO as the medium to build. Even though it comes in a kit, the LEGO Imperial Shuttle is one of my favorites. It’s rare to see an art project where the LEGO bricks themselves are the project though. Over on Etsy you can pick up some strange LEGO bricks that are made from concrete by Tara Ketchum of studio1015. I’m not sure why you would want some concrete bricks, other than the fact that they look cool.

It would be cool if the bricks were larger and you could build big things from them. These little concrete Building Blocks are actually the size of a normal 2 x 4 LEGO brick making them very small. The little bricks are 1 5/8″ x 3/4″ x 1/2″ and they come in sets of six. I wonder if the back of the block has the divots in it for the nubs on the top of the block to sit. It looks like there should be from the way they neatly stack here:

The designer notes that since they are made from concrete each will have a different color and texture. Each set of six blocks will cost you $8.50 with $5 for shipping, though they’re currently sold out.

There are some times when making a product look retro turns out really cool. Things like the new Ford Mustang and the Chevy Camaro are great examples of how designers can use cues from old products to make something new and cool. I think a great example of how not to use retro to make a cool product is this new Brando Retro Mobile MP3 player.

The device looks like a mobile phone form the 1980′s. The color isn’t retro me, all the old phones I ever saw were in ugly beige cases not black like this thing. If you like the retro style of the thing you can order one up for $23 (USD), but don’t be surprised if we all laugh and point at you.

For that much loot you get a player that works with most MP3 and MP4 devices with 3.5mm plugs that can be used as a portable speaker. If you want to play music directly from the device you have to move tracks to a microSD card and slip the card into the players slot. It also has a FM digital tuner and a rechargeable battery. And no, it doesn’t make phone calls.

You’ve probably seen his 6′ Crackberry sculpture already, but these ones are a bit more artistically intriguing.

They are part of his first solo exhibition, and I’ve got to say that they are pretty awesome. Naturally, all of these sculptures are solely comprised of LEGO bricks. Sawaya’s story is also pretty cool, as he quite his job as a corporate lawyer in 2001 to lay LEGO bricks!

Taking its design cues from the snap-together world of LEGO, this clever remote-control car is great for those of you who just have to have things your own way.

When stripped bare, this R/C vehicle just looks like a flat LEGO base. I’m not sure if you can use just any old LEGO blocks with it, but start snapping on some of the 108 included color blocks, and you can build your own unique automotive creation. Of course, you can always change its look when you get bored. The BlockCar base comes in blue, yellow or red versions, and even has built-in headlights and tail lights. And if you get really creative, you could join multiple cars together to make one megaLEGOcar.

While the BlockCar isn’t an official LEGO product, it’s good enough for me (at least until LEGO makes their own version). You can get your hands on the BlockCar R/C vehicle over at Strapya World for just $22 (USD).

For many of us, LEGOs are just plain cool, or at least they were when we were kids. Now brickfans can add another item to their collection of blocky stuff with these cool LEGO wallets.

These LEGO wallets are pretty nifty, and the ones with the baseplates on the side can actually be customized with any bricks you care to attach.

While I think these are fun, I don’t know how comfortable they are since they look pretty bulky and stiff. I’ve actually stopped carrying a wallet anyhow. I don’t like having them in pockets and leaving a wallet in a backpack seems like a bad idea.

LEGO wallets will set you back between £15 to £20 (appx. $24 to $32 USD) depending on the style, and are available from ColorByNumbers.

Dirk took about 60 hours to build this 2-foot tall LEGO Yoshi, complete with bulbous proboscis (I think I know the name of my new band). Sure, he’s nowhere nearly as tall as the 5-foot 9-inch tall Mario, but that doesn’t make Yoshi any less cool in my book. Check out the video clip below to see timelapse footage of the build in progress.

The Lego brick is the simplest form of a creative medium, the USB mouse is a creative tool for some. When you put these two together you get the USB Lego Mouse! The perfect gadget for those young at heart and are not afraid to show it off at their cubicle farm. The Lego Mouse features the standard USB mouse left and right click buttons and a scroll wheel.

Sadly you can’t stack these mice (mouses?) on top of one another, but you can pick one up for $31.96 (USD) at curiosite.com. They’re only available in the awesome color of red – which is fine by me.

The titular aliens from the Alien films are, in my opinion, right at the top of the scariness chart, which means I never, ever thought I’d say anything based on their design was at all cute. And yet, I find the little tiny LEGO alien pretty adorable. I think this is what it must feel like when you think the sky is falling.

Shadow Complex was released for XBLA fewer than ten days ago, and not only is it hugely controversial, but it’s also got a LEGO tribute already. And you thought something like Grand Theft Auto IV made a splash.

Aww, even the guns are adorable! You’d never guess that people have been arguing about boycotting this sweetly violent little scene. Shadow Complex is based on a novel by Orson Scott Card, who is notoriously active in campaigning against gay rights. But it seems that the overwhelmingly glowing reviews are winning out against gamer distaste, as Shadow Complex has rocked XBLA downloads.

And people are crafting little LEGO scenes. Speaking of… as good as Shadow Complex may be, LEGO bricks will always be better. They have truly infinite replayability! But Shadow Complex will only cost you about $15, whereas bricks? Not always so cheap.

Tetris Friends is an online gaming experience that offers a bunch of Flash-based variants on the classic puzzler by Alexey Pajitnov.

The site currently features 7 single-player variants of the game, along with 3 multiplayer games, including this over-the-top 6-player mode.

Games include Marathon, which requires that you finish all 15 levels to win, Sprint, in which you’ve got to clear 40 lines as quickly as possible, and even an Ice Age movie version where you stack acorns instead of blocks. But in between all the modern versions, there’s a loving tribute to retro gaming with Tetris 1989, which looks like a giant version of the Gameboy classic.

In addition to the standalone site, Tetris Friends is already gaining significant popularity as a Facebook App, so you’ll definitely find no shortage of people to play against. Just don’t look at the leaderboards unless you really want to be depressed about your gaming skills.

Ready to stack some bricks? Head on over to Tetris Friends and get crackin’!

Here’s one of those things that makes me go, “why not?”: Building Brick iPod Speakers. On one hand, Lego and iPod barely have anything to do with each other. On the other hand, why not?

The Building Brick iPod Speakers, aka iPod Brick, aka iBlock, but not aka Lego iPod speakers, works with 3rd-5th gen iPods, 1st-3rd gen iPod Nanos and on the iPod touch. I swear I had to retype those iStuff so many times. cOnfusing aS hEll. I mean, they’re not made by aPple.

The center bottom pegs act as nifty volume up and volume down buttons. The speakers are also said to have an “Active Bass System”. Which just might be a fancy way of saying that it has bass. Tinny, but it’s there. It sells for $20 at Think Geek, and no it doesn’t fit together with ordinary Lego blocks. Also, I don’t know if Think Geek only has the blue ones, because for UK residents there are no blue blocks but there are red, white, and black blocks over at iWant One of Those, and they’re $2 cheaper too.

Or a few punches in the face. Playboy21 of psp-hacks has cooked up a tiny program he calls TrickBrick.

If one of your n00b friends owns a PSP, offer to upgrade their firmware. Put TrickBrick into their memory stick’s GAME folder, select it from the game menu and voila. It displays a bricked screenshot:

Next, say “Oh shit oh shit oh shit”. Carry on the charade for as long as you can. Just make sure you can run very fast. Good times.

Some people have way more time on their hands than I. Take for instance this guy, who painstakingly created this Star Wars scene using nothing but a crapload of LEGO bricks.

Tim Goddard (aka Roguebantha) created this amazingly detailed scene he calls “Rebel Attack”. The diorama envisions Rebel forces descending on a base known as “Mustaneer” and kicking some serious Imperial ass.

The display took about a year to put together, and measures about 30 by 50 inches, which works out to about 1:200th scale from actual size (assuming these things actually did exist).

I dare you to name all of the vehicles and weapons recreated in the scene.

LEGO artist extraordinaire Nathan Sawaya’s recent project is this super sweet LEGO skateboard. It’s actual size, and based on the close-up picture of the wheels I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s not actually ride-able.

According to the artist, his inspiration came about thusly: “My friend recently bought a new deck and it only took me a few seconds of staring at it before I realized what my next project would be. I didn’t want to imitate any particular design, so I came up with my own. I call it my NATEboard. Because my name is Nate. And it sounds like skateboard. And I’m lonely.”

It seems hard to believe that a guy with such insane LEGO talents could ever be lonely. Seriously, there must be tons of girls who would love to meet a bricksmith of this caliber, right?

You can see more of Nate’s Lego projects at The Art of the Brick.

Painstakingly assembled by artist Motion5, these artworks use anywhere from 800 to 4000 colorful single-peg LEGO building blocks. Pieces range in size from 10″x10″ up to 20″x30″, and Motion5 will also do custom designs to your specifications. (We want LEGO video game characters, please!)

Inspired by pop icons ranging from Star Trek to Star Wars to Starbucks, the further you stand back, the more you can make out the blocky pixelated imagery.

I had no idea you could get custom phones to look like food products, but I’m here to tell you that you can, and they’re… um… unique.

It all started when I saw this phone that looked like a sandwich, or rather, that looked like a phone horribly smooshed into a sandwich. This led me to the Fun Home Products Custom Phone site and let me tell you, they have lot of very bizarre phones. For example, this phone disguised in a fruit basket. Perfect if you happen to be Carmen Miranda.

Maybe you’re just a one-fruit type of guy. In that case, I’m really feeling this pineapple phone. Of course, the cord is kind of ruining it in all cases. Couldn’t they use cordless phones for that true trompe l’oeil fruit-phone illusion?

It should also be noted that if food’s not your thing, you can get such innovative designs as this phone made from a real brick- although, I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to talk too long if you had to hold a brick up to your ear.

See all of the crazy phone choices and commission one of your own designs here.

These clever desk lamps get their inspiration from classic LEGO building blocks. Designed by Taiwan’s 25togo, these LED illuminated acrylic block lamps look just like a giant-size version of the popular plastic playthings.

The blocks have a snap-off top layer that’s designed to hold pens, pencils and other office items. Each brick measures in at appx. 6″ × 4″ × 2.4″, making them about 100 times larger than a 2×3 peg standard LEGO.

While they don’t actually show multiple lamps interlocked, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t stack a bunch of these lamps to create large, illuminated sculptures.

At this point, the lamps are available only through 25togo’s online shop, and sell for 1600 Taiwan Dollars (appx. $50 USD) each.
