When it comes to furniture, nothing beats functionality and versatility. It also helps if it comes in a clever design, too. Something that has all three of these? The Oturakast Cabinet.

The Oturakast Cabinet was designed by Rianne Koens. The cabinet is made up of separate drawer units that are meant to be stacked up, one upon the other. What makes the design even more unique is that each separate drawer has foldable legs underneath.

So if you happen to have some people over at the apartment but don’t have enough chairs and stools to go around, just unstack your drawers, pull out the legs, and gather every around in a circle.

I’ve always wanted one of those fancy liquor cabinets in my house. I’m not talking about the type that look like an old globe either. I want a really cool one. Perhaps something really original, like one that looks like an AT-AT Imperial Walker. Oh, what’s that you say? Somebody already beat me to the punch? Damn.

Yep, what you’re looking at here is the most awesome bar for serving up your finest booze – all in the shape of an AT-AT. Luckily, it has yet to be brought down by a snow speeder’s tow cables, as that would be a horrible tragedy. The cabinet appears to be handcrafted from wood and brass, and stands at least 4 or 5 feet tall – unless those guys in the photo are Ewoks disguised as humans.

I know not from whence this tasty morsel of awesome comes, other than the fact that these photos were posted up on imgur about a week ago. If you happen to have been involved in the construction of this monument to geeky greatness, speak up and take credit where credit is due. I’ll be over here in the corner, keeping warm with a Hoth Toddy.

We’ve seen plenty of Kody Koala’s work in the past and it never disappointments. These Custom Gaming Themed Boardwalk Cabinets however, are a whole new level of awesome.

I can only hope that we see more Nintendo characters in these cabinets. For those who may not know, in the old days cabinets like these would line the boardwalk. Some were medical quackery, claiming to heal by zapping you with a jolt of electricity, others were similar to the fortune telling machines you’ve seen elsewhere.

The Elecman (From Mega Man) cabinet was created using a Boardwalk bank from Toys r Us. That one vibrates and has LEDs, but won’t shock you. Although these look full sized, this one is just 9-10 inches tall.

The Mario Ironclaw game features all kinds of cool toys inside and was made the same way. The coolest of the trio is the Wario cabinet. Just ask him for your fortune. Your fortune is simple by the way, Wario says that he is going to win.

I wish they had stuff like this on boardwalks today. Too completely awesome. Check out all of the details on Kody Koala’s site.

You may not know it, but the Nintendo 3DS wasn’t Nintendo’s first attempt at 3D gaming – it’s actually the third. The first system was a little-known 3D system for the Famicom, but the one most people know was the Virtual Boy, first released back in 1995, and despite the initial excitement about the system, Nintendo put a bullet in it about a year later. Regardless, all die-hard Nintendo fans should have a Virtual Boy in their collection.

Perhaps the biggest design flaw of the Virtual Boy (besides the strange red on black graphics) was the cheap stand it shipped with. To cure the latter problem, modder Tighe Lory decided to build an upright arcade machine with the Virtual Boy built right in.

Tighe got his inspiration from the periscope-style display and dual joystick design of Atari’s Battlezone. I can only imagine the full-size joysticks being an improvement over the D-Pads on the Virtual Boy controller. The Virtual Boy is mounted on an adjustable height rail, so it can be used by people of varying heights, too.

Other parts of the skinny cabinet come from an old Simpsons arcade machine, along with custom vinyl graphics from a guy named Ed (aka Kawydud). Ed, you did good. The graphics are what really push this thing over the top.

The cabinet even features a plaque, dedicating the build to Yokoi Gunpei, creator of the Virtual Boy and the majority of its games, as well as a little system known as the Game Boy (and before it Nintendo Game & Watch). Yokoi could be considered the father of modern handheld gaming.

Here’s a video clip that shows a little more of the Virtual Boy arcade cabinet in action:

You can read more about the build over at Tighe’s blog as well as on KLOV, and view the complete Virtual Boy arcade gallery over on Picasa.

I made the unfortunate mistake of buying my first (and only) netbook PC about 2 months before the iPad came out. Once I got my iPad, the little ASUS netbook started gathering plenty of dust, and I’ve been wondering what I’m going to do with it. I think I finally have my answer.

Created by Rasmus Konig Sorenson, the Nanocade is the perfect netbook upgrade, turning your compact PC into a full-fledged mini arcade system. Actually, Rasmus built the first one with a Mini ITX board and a 10″ LCD monitor inside, but says a netbook would work perfectly too (although I’m betting you’d need to separate the screen from the keyboard portion to make it fit). The cabinet comes in kit form, and definitely looks like it would take some work to assemble, but the completed prototype sure looks swell.

When fully outfitted, the Nanocade has real arcade quality buttons and a joystick, and once connected to a netbook loaded up with MAME, you’ll be able to play just about any arcade game you want. The only real downside I see to the Nanocade is that the cabinet itself will cost $300 bucks, and then you still have to buy the joystick and buttons making it more costly than most netbooks themselves.

Oh well, I guess I could always just get one of these and call it a day.

A while back, the guys at ThinkGeek made an April Fools joke where they turned an iPad into an arcade cabinet. Now, the guys over at ION have taken the concept and made it real.

The iCade cabinet is constructed out of the same materials you’d find in a real arcade, plus it’s got an authentic full-size arcade joystick and eight buttons. You just snap your iPad into the dock, and you’ll be playing classic arcade games right on your desktop. Surprisingly, the controls connect via Bluetooth instead of a dock connector, but they seem to have no noticeable lag.

ION had a demo unit on display at CES this week, and I got to play with it a bit. While the only game they had on display was Asteroids (which doesn’t really need a joystick), I have to say it was a pleasure to play. I couldn’t really hold my camera and play at the same time, so this video doesn’t show it off, but trust me when I say it’s fun.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The final version of the iCade will ship with an assortment of Atari games – although it’s not clear if they’re included or if you’ll need to buy them at the App Store. However, you won’t be able to play other games on it unless they’re customized to take advantage of the joystick and buttons. Happily, they plan on releasing a developer API, so I assume many more iCade compatible games will come out in the App Store over time.

ThinkGeek says the iCade will sell for $99, and will be available for order this Spring. Get your name on the order notification list now.

I’ve yet to see an episode of the classic British TV show, so forgive me if my understanding of his powers is wrong. The point is that this is one of the geekiest containers for your clothes. Store your wardrobe from the nineties – or 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s – in here, and you can easily kinda sorta go back in time whenever you open it. Although I don’t know why anyone would want to go back to the nineties.

The Doctor Who TARDIS zipperrobe sells for £46 (approx. $70 USD) at Argos. Unfortunately it’s out of stock right now. A similar product is listed at Doctor Who Online, but I don’t know if it’s the exact same thing.

I can’t believe that this Pac-Man arcade cabinet is actually a cake. As in bake it in the oven, cover it with frosting, cut it up and eat it – cake.

The cake artists over at Seattle’s Jet City Cakes created this amazing desert that looks exactly like the original Pac-Man arcade cabinet. Every little detail is there, from the miniature red joystick, to the coin slots, to the teensy little ghosts, cherries and power pills on the playing field.

The birthday cake was made for someone who simply goes by “Dad”, so if you stole this cake (you wouldn’t steal a cake now, would you?) you could give it to your own father. Or if you’re a dad, you could keep it and chow down for yourself. Wakka-wakka-wakka.

Technabob fave Big J.W. is at it again. The guy who brought us all of those wondrous little arcade cabinets has this time created a tiny little version of the classic sit-down Star Wars arcade game.

The miniature system is a precise replica of the original, only, much, much smaller. You’ll need some really tiny quarters to play this machine. Actually, I think you’ll need two miniature quarters from what I recall. Damned 50 cent arcade machines!

The cabinet is part of J.W.’s latest wave of handcrafted arcade miniatures, which also includes Donkey Kong Junior, Centipede, Street Fighter 2, and Mortal Kombat 2. Prices start at $22 (USD) for the basic cabinets, but the Star Wars cockpit will set you back $50 bucks. You can check out all the details over at Big J.W.’s flickr album.

Arcade cabinets are just cool–there’s no way around that. However, when they’re built completely from the ground up, in a whole nifty steampunk motif, complete with a little touch of Frankenstein? Then they even make that ol’ Pac-Gentleman look… okay, that’s still pretty incredible, too.

It plays games! It plays music! It’s equipped with Edison electric light, so don’t try to use a match on it! That’s what the warning label says, anyway, and it seems like sound advice. Though it’s always tempting to torch Frankenstein’s monster.

Dedicated builder Doug Haffner has documented the entire experience on a website, and if you want to watch a great deal of Lost – that’s apparently how he kept himself entertained whilst carving and fitting – you too can produce your own monster arcade machine.

Portal crafts will never die, and why should they? We’re all still deeply attached to our Weighted Companion Cubes (sniff)… so attached, in fact, that some of us build furniture in homage to our six-sided pals.

And there’s even cake… but I don’t know, something tells me it might be a lie. It’s just a feeling I get.

With obligatory cake jokes out of the way, I have to say the fake graffiti on the inside of the cabinet is what really makes this project for me. I love little details like that in games, so seeing it represented here is awesome.

The building process was pretty extensively detailed, in case you’re interested in forging your own Weighted Companion Cube. It’s nice to have something around that will never threaten to stab you.

I’m not sure there could possibly be a better way to play some old school King of Fighters or Fatal Fury, though mini arcade systems might take a little getting used to. Of course, if I had these things lying around, I’d learn to use them posthaste. Y’know, for style.

There are two things that have to be said about this custom Xbox 360 arcade cabinet: it’s big (like the original Xbox, only even bigger) and it’s pretty pricey. Only serious Xbox devotees need apply at $2250… but that is, after all, cheaper than a lot of gaming PCs, and it would take quite the pimped-out PC to match this project.

The cabinet itself is an old Midway machine (new monitor included) with the guts of a 60GB Xbox 360 refitted inside. This machine has one feature the old arcades lacked–you don’t have to stand at the machine and beat on the controls. Sure, you can, and for some games, you’ll certainly want to, especially if there’s someone to fill the shoes of Player 2. But if you’re in the mood to kick back on the sofa and use a wireless controller, you can.

Can’t you just picture yourself standing there, taking on the role of Armed Person Fighting Baddies? And crying, of course, over the smoking remains of the bank account sacrified to buy the thing.

Now I haven’t played with model trains since I was a kid, but when I saw these miniature arcade cabinets for model railroaders, I had to give them a mention.

J & C Studios makes these teeny, tiny retro arcade machine models built to O-Scale proportions. Each 1.75″ tall game cabinet snaps together from laser-cut black styrene, and offer a place for you to put a grain-of-wheat or LED bulb behind the screen so it can light up.

J & C offers self-stick decal kits for Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, Zaxxon, Phoenix and Defender, but you could certainly make your own custom labels using a color printer if you wanted. Me, I want a miniature BattleZone machine. And if you’re feeling even more retro, they’ve got super small pinball machines too.

The arcade machines are just $7.49 (USD) a piece and the pinball machines will run you $6.49 each. You can find them over at the J & C Studios website. With a little work, you could probably stick a circuit board and an LCD screen inside one of these if you really wanted to go to town.

It’s been a while since the guys over at Geneva Labs wowed us with their stylish room-filling iPod stereo systems. Now, Geneva is back with an all-in-one home theater sound system that’s sure to look great in any high-end living space.

The GenevaSound Home Theater is a high output home theater sound system, built completely into a single piece of furniture. The system cranks out tons of volume thanks to a 7 channel, 700-watt digital amplifier and 7 speakers, including a booming 12-inch subwoofer. It’s available in a hand-lacquered black finish and also a glossy white version for those of you who manage to come up with one of those elusive white LCD or Plasma TVs.

Simply place your flat-panel TV on top of the cabinet and connect your video and audio sources. There’s plenty of room inside the cabinet for your satellite or cable receiver, video game console and disc players. And like Geneva’s previous sound systems, there’s a convenient iPod/iPhone dock built into the top of the cabinet. There’s also a slot loading CD player and an FM radio along if you care to kick it in old school.

While the GenevaSound is only a 2.1 system, it does offer acoustically-enhanced surround sound using something Geneva calls their EmbracingSound digital sound processor.

Priced at $3,999 (USD), including White Glove delivery and setup, the system isn’t for those on a tight budget, but if you’re looking for a serious piece of media furniture for your living room, you should definitely check it out.

This could very well be the best home arcade cabinet of all time. Not only does it include a fully decked-out arcade emulation system, complete with real arcade controls, it also happens to have a kegerator built in.

That’s right. In between rounds of Dig Dug and Space Invaders, you and your buds can grab yourself a tall cold one. The Gamerator comes loaded up with over 180 licensed arcade classics, but can also be connected to a game console of your choice. But who am I kidding? A few frothy brewskis and you won’t care if you’re playing that arcade game based on the rock band Journey or Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

In addition to the systems authentic arcade joysticks, buttons and trackball, there’s also a generous 24-inch LCD display for you to get your game on. But the best detail is the two cupholders embedded right next to the controls so you can enjoy you can keep your buzz going while you play.

You can find the Gamerator is floating around on eBay right now for a starting bid of two grand. Expect the price to rise from there.

Sure, there are plenty of companies making arcade cabinets these days, but I’ve never seen one quite like this. The cabinet is translucent and gives you a light show while you get your game on.

In what’s probably the least subtle cabinet design ever made, Official Game Haven’s CrystalCade arcade system is loaded up with tons of brightly- colored LEDs which cycle through various programmable patterns.

If you can get past the bright lights and ridiculous array of speakers mounted on top, the CrystalCade actually has some pretty decent specs. The cabinet is loaded up with arcade-quality joysticks, buttons and a full-size trackball, and is big enough for two gamers to play head-to-head. Under the hood is a reasonably powerful PC running emulation software, a 21-inch flat screen monitor and a THX-certified 5.1 surround sound system.

If the flashing colored lights aren’t Vegas enough for you, they also offer gold, chrome and platinum plating on the controllers. The only thing this cabinet is missing is some marble columns.

Fans of arcade games should definitely give this new arcade cabinet a look. Dream Arcades latest system is loaded to the gills with features, yet is very reasonably priced as home arcade systems go.

The $1799 Dreamcade 2.0 is a Windows-based arcade system with over 145 licensed games pre-loaded. Arcade games include titles from Atari, Midway, Namco, Digital Leisure and Capcom. There’s even a number of classic Atari 2600 games thrown in for good measure.

The system has some really nice touches like a 19-inch arcade CRT monitor, two sets of real arcade controls, backlit buttons, and even a trackball. There are even side-mounted buttons for playing pinball games as well. It’s got a lighted marquee that lets you install your own custom artwork, and the cabinet is made of a sturdy 3/4-inch laminate, just like real arcade cabinets.

Unlike some systems the Dreamcade is completely ready to go, and can play games right out of the box. Plus, since it’s Windows-based, you can add your own games too.
