This Death Star Wedding cake is the perfect metaphor for marriage. I think. If you can precariously stay balanced on a space station, all will be well. Or maybe it just symbolizes the fact that you do everything together, including destroying Alderaan.

It’s adorable though. Vader, do you have the ring? Do you TK-421, take the bride TK-422 as your wife? In sickness and in health? In a rebel attack or just pulling guard duty? You may now take off your helmet and kiss the bride.

I hope they don’t get sent to Tatooine for their honeymoon and spend the entire time looking for droids. Or worse yet, get sent to Endor and get beat up by Ewoks. This cake comes from Sweet on Cakes. I especially like how the bride-trooper is in her gown.

While many mobile gamers have probably moved on from Plants vs. Zombies by now, I’m still not finished with the most painfully difficult mini-games yet, so it’s still in heavy rotation on my iPad. Somebody else is still enjoying their PvZ too, as is evidenced by this excellent birthday cake, inspired by the game.

The cake was created by Imelda Wikamulia as a present for Technabob reader Greg Off’s birthday, and it’s loaded up with all of our favorite PvZ characters. In the pics, I can see some sunflowers, peashooters, kernel-pults, wall-nuts, a couple of potato mines and torchwood among other defenses. There are also ample zombies on the attack.

Virtually the entire thing is edible, including the hardened sugar pool, and the coconut-dusted green lawn. About the only thing you can’t eat are the tiny cloth costumes made for some of the zombies. As the individual plant and zombie pops get finished off, there’s a whole bunch of additional ones for the eating.

Kudos to Imelda for a great geeky cake, and thanks again to Greg for sending along the pics. Now I need to go find me some sugar, so I can stay up late to finish those pesky mini-games.

If you’re a Jedi, I suppose one way to defeat the Empire would be to start eating the Stormtroopers. Normally that would require a Rancor monster but you can get in on the fun with this Stormtrooper cake. If you can believe it, the entire thing is edible, with the exception of its PVC “bones”.

This 6′ 4″ tall Stormtrooper cake was created by Amanda Oakleaf Cakes for the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston. It took ten people two weeks to complete it and it weighs about 300 pounds. If you’re wondering how it manages to stand up under the weight of all that cake, fondant, and Rice Krispie treats, it’s got a lightweight PVC skeleton keeping things in place.

If you want more details on how they did it, the bakery posted a photo gallery that shows the process of the build. How many does it feed? Well, it was eaten by about 600 people. Sadly, I was not one of them.

There’s nothing us geeks like more than stuff that looks like Doctor Who’s TARDIS. Except maybe a TARDIS that’s actually edible. Sign me up. You have to send mad props to the guys at UK bakery Confarreatio Cakes for pulling off this incredible TARDIS cake.

The TARDIS cake was made for the wedding of a couple of serious Doctor Who fans, and it’s intricately detailed to look just like the real deal. The iconic blue police box was made up from a stack of four 6″x6″ cakes, and apparently even has flashing LEDs up at the top powered by batteries stuffed inside the icing. Yum. Batteries.

Despite the fact that the cake was a huge hit with the bride and groom, the bakers insist they weren’t the least bit geeky. Yeah, right. Because there’s nothing at all geeky about a TARDIS wedding cake. Besides, all geeks are welcome here.

Check out more pictures of the TARDIS cake over on Confarreatio Cake’s flickr stream.

The Star Wars movies would have been a whole different deal if all they had was a Gingerbread budget. Here is a glimpse of what it might have looked like. Can you imagine tasty gingerbread AT-ATs walking across a field of sugar as a young Luke Skyginger takes it down? Me either, but this AT-AT sure looks tasty.

This huge and delicious-looking imperial walker gingerbread treat was made by BlackMarket Bakery in Irvine, CA. It was created and baked by Rachel Klemek, the owner, who appears to be a sci-fi geek herself. The AT-AT is all gingerbread and icing, with licorice weapons.

It must be Christmas time on Hoth as well judging by all of the candy canes. This amazing geek delicacy is currently on display at the Discovery Science Center if you want a closer look. No licking!

It even has the hand-carved APPLE COMPUTER logo and the oddly-placed power outlets and angle irons from the most frequently-pictured Apple 1 wooden case out there.

I’m betting that this version doesn’t have a 6502 CPU and a bunch of other chips inside – instead, there’s probably some tasty chocolate or vanilla cake instead.

It took Rachel Linhart several days to put together this cool cake. All in all, she clocked in about 24 hours of build time. Sadly though, this cake was demolished en route to the birthday party it was meant for, courtesy of New York’s finest cab drivers.

It’s sad that it was destroyed before it could be eaten, but the kids happily imagined that Luke destroyed the cake with his precise, Force-controlled shot on the way, and not potholes and bad driving.

The cake was made by Mike’s Amazing Cakes, who definitely lived up to its name. It was commissioned by Flickr member sharkhats for his and his spouse’s 3rd wedding anniversary. I wonder what the eye was made of, but it doesn’t look edible. I wish Mike’s had made a making-of video of the cake.

I bet as you look at the pictures with this story I am not the only one that is more than a little disturbed by the realism of this cake based on this disturbing Threadless t-shirt. The husband and wife duo that made the cake outdid themselves with the realism and cake-making chops they have shown off with this Angry Birds cake.

After baking, the cakes were frozen and then the shape of the green pig heads was carved out of the frozen cake. After that, they used white chocolate modeling dough for the crown and to cover the birds and the pig with what looks like real skin. The ears, slingshot and birds on the pig heads were made from modeling chocolate.

The touches on the face of the pic and birds are made with vodka-diluted food coloring. The little birds stand on the pigs with the help of toothpicks. Would you eat this cake or is it too gross for you?

This cake is just a little more realistic than the Angry Birds Cakes we’ve seen in the past.

While Transformers cakes are nothing new, there’s got to be something strange going on in the heads of people behind this humongous cake. This gigantic Transformers cake was made to celebrate Michael Bay’s upcoming Tranformers: Dark of Moon movie, which comes out in a few days. It weighs about 2,000 pounds and is shaped like a Chevy Camaro.

Here you can see Bumblebee poking out of it. It was designed by Buddy Valastro, best known for working on TLC’s Cake Boss. The cake was so huge that it was impossible to bake it in a bakery. His team had to bake it outside. It’s not the largest cake (or autobot) I’ve ever seen, but it has some neat features like a flaming blaster and wings that move.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It makes you wonder how many people this cake will feed, and if it will taste any good.

Actually, that title is a little misleading, because we all know that despite 3PO’s fluency in over six million forms of communication , and R2′s ability to hack into any security system, swim underwater, or project holograms, neither droid knows how to bake a cake.

But Flickr contributor bkrista77 clearly knows her way around the dessert kitchen, with this epic, albeit abstract mashup of R2-D2 and C-3PO. I think she should have called it the R2-PO cake. Or maybe C-3-D2. I can’t decide. They both roll off the tongue so nicely.

For some reason it makes me imagine what would have happened if R2 and 3PO were the ones who got stuck in the trash compactor in Episode IV.

It’s almost June and the wedding season is high up in the air. My sister and her longtime boyfriend of ten years just tied the knot a couple of weekends ago and I’m still weaning myself off the wedding bug (which makes me want to lie down in bed all day eating wedding cake. Pathetic, I know.)

But anyway, while at the reception, I overheard a conversation between some guests who were arguing about the state of marriages these days. The conversation ended with one of the women saying that she finds it puzzling as to why people still get married when a lot of them end up in messy divorces or prolonged separations.

So when I saw this Tetris Wedding cake, my thoughts went right back to those two women who were arguing the merits of marriage. I would love to have met or seen more of the wedding of the couple who decided that their wedding cake should pay homage to one of the greatest classical video games of all time. It seems like the couple went for a more literal take on the conversation that those women had at my sister’s wedding: puzzling but it’s not something you can’t figure out with time and a little practice.

The road to tying the knot can be long and arduous (as my sister’s was) or it can be quick like a whirlwind romance (like some of my other sister’s early twenty-something friends getting married after 2 or 3 months of knowing each other.) Whatever pushes people to finally take the plunge and make a lifetime commitment is, indeed, puzzling. But frankly, I don’t think that would matter much if you’re saying “I Do” (and not “I Do?”) to the person who you know you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Note bene: Excuse the writer for coming up with a sappier than usual blog post about a Tetris-inspired wedding cake. She blames it all, once more, on the wedding bug. *Achoo!*

The guys over at Charm City Cakes have introduced a new line of cakes including a couple that are perfect for readers of Technabob. Now what cake isn’t perfect for me and my epic sweet-tooth? Maybe one with whipped cream frosting – I don’t much care for those. But pretty much any other cake – especially one that looks like Boba Fett – is the best thing I can imagine. Especially, right now – I need dessert.

These smaller-than-normal Charm City Cakes are called “Cakes for Two”, but actually feed fifteen people (or two really hungry Technabob readers) and come in a variety of fun designs. But the ones I care about are based on iconic Star Wars characters like Fett and this Stormtrooper.

From the looks of the photos, it actually looks like their helmets have been put through some sort of head-slicing machine that didn’t quite get the decapitation right. Mmmmm. Tasty, tasty decapitation. Each cake is 8-inches across and has three layers of goodness inside. The worst part about these cakes? The price. They sell for $250 a piece – which works out to appx. $16.67 a slice for you mathematicians – or about $125 a slice for me.

Yes, I have to admit that one of the only games that I have installed on my MacBook Pro is Angry Birds. When I first started playing it, I immediately understood why the game was so addictive. It’s even addictive to people watching it. The Angry Birds playable birthday cake brings up a whole new meaning to the word messy if you start throwing around some angry birds.

If you’re an Angry Birds fan, then you couldn’t wish for a better birthday cake. The cake was created by Mike Cooper and he admits that what took him about 10 hours to create what was destroyed in about 2 minutes. He made the cake for his son’s 6th birthday party.

This was definitely a great idea and it somewhat sad/satisfying to see it get destroyed in the video. The last Angry Birds cake we had here wasn’t nearly this much fun!

I used to think this Atari 2600 cake was my favorite video game cake, but I got bored with the blocky graphics and repetitive games. Just like the real console, this Intellivision cake has much more realistic graphics. I know, because George Plimpton told me so.

This cake was made by Debbie Goard of DebbieDoesCakes (who has made all sorts of cool video game cakes) and it really is a perfect – if a little shiny and melty looking – replica of an original Mattel Intellivision game console. I’m not sure how tasty all that black and gold icing is, but who cares? It looks great.

Even before her husband, Ricky Gonzalez, proposed to her, Donna Marie San Severo already had an idea for her wedding cake – the scene from Ghostbusters where the four heroes blast away at Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. When Ricky proposed, the two even considered other themes for their cake, but they eventually came back to Donna’s original idea because both of them are huge fans of the movie. Here’s what they ended up getting:

So who did they call to make this cake? Charm City Cakes, who are no strangers to strange requests. They made the 3 ft. tall skyscraper out of pumpkin-cinnamon cake frosted with butter cream, while the church rubble was made of Rice Krispies treats. Stay Puft and the couple – who naturally served as the Ghostbusters – were made of fondant. As a neat touch, the proton streams lit up:

To top it all off, the couple and their guests later danced to a remix of the Ghostbusters theme song. They would not have been able to do the same had they gone with their other choices for the cake – Jaws, Indiana Jones or Alien.

We like our geeky cakes around here and the gang at Gizmodo has some pics of a birthday cake that a geek was served that looked just like an iPhone 4. The birthday boy was Carlos, and the cake looked yummy enough on its own.

When Carlos when to cut the cake he got another surprise, a real iPhone 4 to match his yummy cake was inside. It’s a good thing Carlos isn’t the sort of guy that stabs a cake first and then cuts. It would suck to stab your new iPhone 4 accidentally.

Obviously the cake can’t be baked with an iPhone inside it all boxed up. The image of the iPhone screen on top of the cake looks like one of those edible photos. I bet the cake was hollowed out where the iPhone needed to sit and then the image was put over the top of the phone to hide it. However it was done, this is one cool cake.

Hong Kong Technabob reader Vivian wrote us to let us know about this fun Space Invaders cake she made for her husband’s 31st birthday.

Atop the cake is the most iconic of the Space Invaders, being blasted away from below. I always wondered why they didn’t have names like the ghosts in Pac-Man. I guess I’ll just call him Invadey. Of course, Invadey is a whole lot bigger than I remember him from the game. It’s like a bunch of invaders got together to form one mega-invader, and then came up with a dumb name for him. Well his enormousness certainly will make him harder to kill. At least he’s just firing regular-size projectiles.

Also, I don’t know what black icing really tastes like (or what it’ll do to your teeth), but I like Space Invaders, and I like cake, so it’s all good in my book.
